About 2008 Jaguar XK-Series
In 2007, Jaguar did a full redesign of its XK-Series, which includes a base coupe and convertible as well as performance XKR trims in coupe and convertible form. The redesign incorporated a bonded and riveted monocoque aluminum alloy body structure and body panels. The 2008 line receives only minor changes. The XK-Series is lighter and stiffer than both the Mercedes SL and the BMW 6 Series. With its lighter weight and stiffer structure, Jaguar engineers can more precisely tune the XKâ??s suspension and ride characteristics. A 4.2-liter V8 with Variable Camshaft Phasing generates 300 hp in the standard coupe and convertible. Performance XKR trims add a supercharger to the V8 to produce 420 hp. Power courses through a six-speed sequential shift ZF automatic transmission with extremely quick paddle shifters (400 milliseconds between shifts) that blip the throttle before downshifting and upshifts close to the 6,000-rpm redline. Drivers select one of three distinct modes - Drive Automatic, Adaptive Automatic, and Sequential Manual - for immediate response beyond anything your wrist could perform. All models come with Jaguar's improved Computer Active Technology Suspension (CATS), a two-stage adaptive damping system that employs sensors to measure the XK's attitude, steering-wheel angle, pitch and yaw, and brake demand, from which it determines the independent adjustments to the four shocks almost instantaneously. A standard two-stage Dynamic Stability Control allows the XK to corner in racecar-like fashion with minimal body sway. Braking is powerful with ABS/EBD ventilated disc brakes that stop the car in just over 113 feet from 60 mph. With its 6.4-inch-longer wheelbase and almost 3 inches of additional width, the redesigned XK-Series interior has lots of extra room. The redesigned interior features a modern dashboard design, as opposed to the traditional Jaguar configuration. Traditional wood trim is still plentiful, but aluminum is also on the checklist. The front seats are quite comfortable and supportive for long trips, but the rear seats are still better for small adults, kids, or packages. Safety equipment includes front-seat side airbags that provide head and chest protection, whiplash-reducing front seats, and a two-stage traction control system. While not at the level of Porsche 911 sports-car performance, Jaguarâ??s XK-Series provides refined luxury grand touring enjoyment at any speed in a strikingly styled vehicle.
