About 2009 Chevrolet Suburban
With a name like Suburban, it's pretty obvious who Chevrolet aims to please with this full-size SUV. Coming in 14 inches longer in wheelbase and with 30 more cubic feet of cargo space than the Tahoe, the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban retains its title as the largest SUV available on the market. Solid handling, surefooted road grip, impressive towing capacity, and powerful V8 engines make this an ideal vehicle for families or weekenders needing reliable performance, durability, and plenty of room. Updates in 2008 improved overall handling by widening the stance and lowering the ride height of the Suburban, and most changes for 2009 focus on added features. The SUV comes in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, in both 1500 (half-ton) and 2500 (three-quarter-ton) versions. The all-wheel drive features driver-selectable modes and offers low-range gearing for off-road performance. An optional Off-Road package adds skid plates, off-road tires, and stronger shocks. 1500 trims get their power from a 320-hp, 5.3-liter V8 engine, while 2500s carry a 352-hp, 6.0-liter V8. Both engines have cylinder deactivation to improve fuel economy, though their respective 15/21 and 14/19 mpg ratings won't win awards at the gas pump. For 2009, the 4-speed automatic disappears, and the 6-speed automatic is now standard across all trims. Towing capacity ranges from 8,100 pounds for the 1500s to 9,600 pounds for the 2500 series. Although not yet rated in crash tests, previous Suburbans have earned five stars in both frontal and side impact tests, but only three in rollovers. Considering most SUVs' tendency for body lean, this number is not surprising. All trims feature traction and stability control, ABS brakes, dual front-side and side curtain airbags for all rows, and OnStar. A backup camera can be added to aid in parking, and the performance-oriented LTZ trim gets a new optional blind spot warning system. The 2009 Suburban seats up to nine people in three rows, with plenty of leg and headroom for front and second-row passengers. The third row is more suitable for children, as both legroom and access are limited. Cargo capacity remains a highlight for the SUV, which starts out at 45.8 cubic feet, but expands to 137 with the seats down or removed. One glaring drawback is the lack of flat-folding second or third rows. The third row can be removed and the second row pushed forward, but reinstalling the seats can be cumbersome. The second row split-folds for some versatility and features a center storage console for more space. Offered in three trims (LS, LT, and LTZ), the 2009 Suburban starts out with full power features, power front seats, and a CD player. New this year is Bluetooth capability on all trims, and the LTZ gets standard heated and cooled front seats. A dual-screen DVD player joins the options list, which also includes a sunroof, power running boards, and power pedals. The interior makes use of high-quality materials, with the 2500 models boasting wood trim. The overall ride stays quiet and insulated, producing few bumps and jolts.
