Overview

What looks a little like a shrunken Chevy Equinox, has its roots in a non-existent Saturn and is available only in bulk? Answer: the 2014 Chevrolet Captiva Sport. This compact 5-seat crossover is strictly geared toward the working class (i.e. taxi, limo, delivery and courier services), but some non-traditional creature comforts, especially in higher trims, along with some distinctly comfort- and convenience-oriented optional equipment should engender more than the usual company loyalty from drivers.
This little workhorse remains available in four trims, the base 1LS, the markedly up-ticked 2LS, the upper-midlevel LT and the flagship LTZ. All trims are delivered with standard front-wheel drive (FWD), but one of the more attractive features of this fleet-leaning mini-ute is its availability with traction-savvy full-time all-wheel drive (AWD). All trims additionally sport 56.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seatbacks folded, and this space is augmented by fold-flat front passenger seatbacks lineup-wide.
Again the peppy 2.4-liter variable-valve-timed (VVT) inline 4-cylinder (I4) powerplant drives the 2014 Captiva, with the standard 6-speed automatic transmission (with standard fuel-saving Eco mode) managing 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. Mileage is estimated at 22 mpg city/28 highway in FWD trims and 20/28 in AWD editions, while towing is maxed out at 1,500 pounds with the optional towing package (hitch and wiring) installed.
The base 1LS boasts standard 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, a roof rack and power-adjustable mirrors adorning its handsome profile, while the cabin sports cloth upholstery, full power accessories and carpeted floor mats front and rear. Cruise control and telescoping tilt-wheel steering are also standard aboard this entry-level trim, as are manual air conditioning and OnStar Directions and Connections service bolstered by Bluetooth hands-free technology. Entertainment is once more offered via a single-CD player with 6 speakers, satellite radio and a USB port.
The amped-up 2LS adds heated outside power mirrors, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, auto climate control and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, with the LT tossing in upgraded 17-inch wheels, additional cargo management tools and upgraded exterior and interior accent pieces.
The top-end LTZ, as befits its princely status, offers such additional standard goodies as 18-inch chrome clad wheels, a power sunroof, leather-trimmed upholstery, heated front seats, remote engine start, rear parking sensors and a universal remote garage door opener. This high-end trim also flaunts a 10-speaker premium audio system, along with added leather-trimmed cabin accents. All but the upsized wheels are additionally available to the 2LS and LT trims as optional equipment.
Depending on the trim selected, further options such as roof-rack crossbars and cargo management extras can be delivered with the 2014 Captiva Sport, with higher trims now eligible for GM’s MyLink audio and infotainment upgrade that boasts a 7-inch touchscreen display and can be enhanced with GPS-based navigation.
Safety-wise, each fleet-oriented 2014 Captiva Sport trim carries standard 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front side-mounted airbags, front and rear head airbags, daytime running lights, OnStar emergency assistance and communications and GM’s PASS-Key III theft-deterrent system. The 2LS and higher trims additionally sport standard front fog/driving lights, while the top-shelf LTZ flaunts standard rain-sensing wipers that are also available to the midlevel LT.

I rented a Captiva on a business trip for a week recently, after having test driven one (for my daughter). It looks small, but inside, it's fairly roomy. We had 3 adults and all were comfortable, though back seat was snug for me (6'/225 lbs) sitting behind driver (about 6'). Would probably be uncomfortable on longer trips. Easy access to radio and climate controls, dashboard is visible. Even though it was 4 cylinders, it got right up on the highway and into highway speeds with no problems. Finally, I really liked the visibility. We have an Avalanche and an Infiniti SUV, each with some blind spots. I really didn't sense any blind spot looking left, right or in rearview. I feel comfortable this would be a safe, practical car for my daughter and will likely buy one.

Was nice car we didnt have it a year and the engine seized it was used. Everything says it burns oil but from what I saw its not burning it its being sucked out of a hise on the top of the engine straight into the air intake. I changed the oil and less than 2 months after it was locked up never gave a warning light or nothing it started out by randomly stalling but no check engine light would illuminate so I had no clue where to start. I recommend avoiding these with the 4 cylinder or be very diligent in checking oil regular.

My 2014 Captiva started rear its ugly head a year after I got it. I bought it used at 100,000 miles on the odometer and had to have the fuel system rebuild for $750 in 2020. Last year (2022) I had to replace the heater motor and the motor door switch which cost $800. Now in 2023 the timing belt let go which messed up my #4 piston. There is moisture in my engine and oil. Plus the excessive moisture is wearing down my motor parts and cam shaft. Too expensive to fix, now shes sitting in my garage and unusable.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Chevrolet Captiva Sport?
At 68.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report on any candidate you’re serious about and prioritize listings with clear records. A pre-purchase inspection can help you focus on body condition, repair quality, and signs of wear that may not show up in photos.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Chevrolet Captiva Sport?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 25.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 170 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.50% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $6,581.60, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Chevrolet Captiva Sport's resale value?
The current average of $6,715 sits slightly below last year's $7,031.
That price movement suggests the model has softened, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. If you plan to sell later, your resale outcome will depend heavily on mileage, condition, and whether you buy near the lower end of the market now. A well-kept example should hold up better than one with accident history or visible wear.
Should I buy a 2014 Chevrolet Captiva Sport or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 25.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.50% compared with last year.
The bottom line: The 2014 makes sense if you want to focus on current pricing and can be selective about condition and history. If you’re price-sensitive, this is a year worth watching closely for a listing near the low end of the range, but you should be especially careful to verify accident history before you buy.
