CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW 6 Series

Summary
With 205 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,007, 38.0% of 2016 BMW 6 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW 6 Series 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW 6 Series sits in the third-generation lineup, and what makes it distinctive is the way it blends style, performance, and luxury in a low-slung grand touring package. BMW offered it in coupe, convertible, and four-door Gran Coupe body styles, and this generation was also the first to add the Gran Coupe format. By 2016, the car had already received a visual refresh with new headlights and bumpers, and it also got a tech update with a new 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen running iDrive 6.0. That combination gives the 2016 model a more modern feel than earlier versions while preserving the 6 Series’ sleek, dramatic character.
Mechanically, the 2016 BMW 6 Series is defined by strong performance and a broad spread of powertrains. The mainstream 640i used a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight six with 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, while the 650i used a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. BMW also offered the M6, with 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, and the Alpina B6 Gran Coupe for buyers who wanted something even more exclusive. The car’s strengths are clear: it is engaging to drive, stylish, and very comfortable, with a well-appointed cabin and available driver-assistance features such as blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control.
There are tradeoffs, though, and they matter for shoppers. The back seat is snug even in the Gran Coupe, so the four-door body style is more about appearance than true practicality. The 6 Series is also expensive to maintain, and the V8-powered versions are described as less trouble-prone than the six-cylinder models only in the sense that the V8 is more demanding and costly to own. For buyers who want a luxurious, distinctive BMW with real grand touring appeal, the 2016 6 Series stands out for its mix of presence, power, and comfort, even if it is not the easiest car to live with.

This car is undeniably incomparable to anything else out there. It is rock solid and seeps sexiness. One small suggestion would be to have more cup holders in the front of car, and passenger side….but perfection otherwise.

Luxury ride with plenty of power in 6 (640) or 8 (650) cyl model. All the features you’d want/expect and powerful curb appeal. This is a great ride!

Is the 2016 BMW 6 Series a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. The 2016 BMW 6 Series blends style, performance, and luxury in a low-slung grand touring package, and it was offered as a coupe, convertible, and four-door Gran Coupe. It also received a visual refresh and a tech update with a 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen running iDrive 6.0, which helps it feel more modern than earlier versions. For you, that means this is a strong fit if you want a distinctive luxury car that emphasizes presence and driving enjoyment over everyday practicality. 39.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 BMW 6 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The 2016 BMW 6 Series is described as comfortable, engaging to drive, and well-appointed, with available driver-assistance features that add to its appeal. At the same time, it is also described as expensive to maintain, so the ownership experience depends heavily on how well the car has been cared for. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is higher repair and upkeep exposure if maintenance history is incomplete or deferred.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW 6 Series?
At 54.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a full vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Put a pre-purchase inspection at the top of your list, with extra attention to bodywork quality, panel alignment, electronics, and signs of deferred maintenance. Because this is a luxury grand tourer with higher ownership costs, condition matters more than mileage alone.

What is the 2016 BMW 6 Series's resale value?
The current average of $20,046 sits slightly below last year's $20,928.
That decline suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price carefully to stay competitive. The 6 Series' distinctive styling and luxury positioning can help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with strong equipment and clean history. If you buy smart and maintain the car well, you improve your odds of preserving value when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW 6 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 39.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.21% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
The 2016 is the right pick if you want the updated look and tech of this generation, plus a strong mix of style, comfort, and performance. If you are more price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing for a lower entry cost, but you should still prioritize condition, maintenance records, and accident history over small differences in asking price.
