The 2016 Chevrolet Impala stands out as a large, front-wheel-drive sedan that was refined enough to feel like a premium value without abandoning the basics that made the nameplate appealing. In this generation, Chevrolet gave the Impala attractive modern styling, generous standard features, and a trio of available powertrains. Reviewers also praised its cavernous interior space, easy-to-use tech, and silky-smooth ride quality, which helped it feel more upscale than its price suggested.
For buyers, the cabin is a major part of the appeal. The Impala offers an expansive rear seat, great visibility, and 39.8 inches of rear legroom, along with an 18.8 cubic-foot trunk. Tech was also generous, with a responsive MyLink infotainment system, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth, USB inputs, and available navigation. Chevrolet also made several safety features available, including blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warnings, and forward automatic emergency braking, though most of those features cost extra.
There are tradeoffs, though. The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder made 196 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, and the source says it proved insufficient for the big sedan. The 2.4-liter mild-hybrid four offered up to 28 mpg combined, but it just didn’t have enough power to tempt buyers, and Chevrolet quickly and quietly dropped it. Even so, the 2016 Chevrolet Impala remains appealing because it delivers a lot of car for the money, with a comfortable ride, a roomy interior, and a strong overall value proposition.
