The diesel powertrain is described as quick, quiet for its class, and strong under load, which supports confidence if you need a truck that can handle demanding use.

The cost-effectiveness notes also point to features that make ownership easier, including the side-camera setup and other work-focused conveniences that help with towing and tight maneuvering. What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD?

At 68.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck was used for towing, hauling, or commercial work. Focus on overall condition, signs of heavy-duty use, and whether the truck’s equipment still functions as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Work Truck trim is the most basic setup, with the gas V8, a 4.2-inch color screen, 4 speakers, and a USB port. LT adds the larger MyLink touchscreen, 17-inch aluminum wheels, heated seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Bluetooth connectivity. LTZ adds leather seating, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, and more chrome, while High Country brings a unique grille design, color-matched bumpers, and 20-inch wheels.
• Powertrain: The standard engine is a 6.0-liter V8 with 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. The available 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 makes 445 horsepower and 910 pound feet of torque, and it is paired with a 6-speed Allison automatic transmission and available 4-wheel drive with low range.
• Safety package: The truck includes a reversing camera with active guidelines, side-mirror cameras that cover both sides, and trailering safety equipment such as trailer brake control and the ability to cycle through all the cameras while towing.
• Infotainment: The base unit is a 4.2-inch color screen, while the larger 8-inch MyLink touchscreen adds an easier layout and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Navigation-equipped versions also add real-time traffic and weather forecasts.
• Fuel efficiency: The diesel test truck returned 16.6 mpg in mixed driving.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is offered in 4 trim levels: Work Truck, LT, LTZ, High Country.

Here's the short version:

• Work Truck: This is the value-first choice if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the most basic equipment. It gives you the gas V8, the 4.2-inch screen, 4 speakers, and a USB port, so it makes sense if you mainly want a heavy-duty work truck without extra comfort features.
• LT: This is the best-value trim for most buyers because it adds the larger MyLink touchscreen, heated seats, Bluetooth, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel without jumping all the way to luxury-trim pricing. It is the sweet spot if you want a more usable daily cabin while staying relatively cost-conscious.
• LTZ: Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin, with leather seating, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, and extra chrome. It suits you if comfort and convenience matter more than keeping the purchase as lean as possible.
• High Country: This is the top-tier choice, with a unique grille design, color-matched bumpers, and 20-inch wheels. It is the right pick if you want the most premium appearance and equipment in the lineup.

The safety setup is a strength across the truck, with the side-mirror camera system and trailering aids adding real-world usefulness.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient and focused.

• Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,405 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.84% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 68.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $29,309, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD's resale value?

The current average of $30,495 sits slightly below last year's $31,388.

That kind of price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now and may also mean future resale depends heavily on condition and equipment. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintain the truck well, you are better positioned to hold value in a segment where buyers care a lot about capability and upkeep.

Trucks with strong owner satisfaction ratings tend to retain buyer demand, and this model year's 4.67/5 is a positive sign for resale support over time.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD safe?

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The reversing camera is large, vivid, and has active guidelines that turn with the wheel, and the side-mirror camera system is especially useful because it covers both sides when you signal. The truck also includes trailering safety equipment such as trailer brake control and the ability to cycle through all the cameras while towing.

That setup makes the Silverado HD easier to place on the road and more confidence-inspiring when you are towing or changing lanes. The main caveat is that its safety strengths are centered on visibility and towing assistance rather than a long list of advanced driver-assistance features.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.84% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 stands out for its all-new diesel engine and worksite-friendly features that make towing and jobsite use easier.

The bottom line: If you want a heavy-duty truck with strong diesel power and practical work-focused features, the 2017 is the right year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully and look for a well-kept example near the low end of the range, but condition and history should matter more than chasing the cheapest listing.
