About 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid
overall
A no-nonsense hybrid hatchback from Hyundai stands out for its specs, not its looks.
Hyundai must be playing the long game with the all-new Ioniq. After all, unless it's preparing for gas to hit $4 a gallon again, why else would a carmaker release a compact hybrid hatchback when Americans are ignoring small, fuel-efficient cars in favor of crossovers and SUVs?
If gas prices do spike again, the Ioniq Hybrid will already be on dealer lots, awaiting buyers attracted by a promise of 55 mpg. An all-electric model is also available if you live in California, and a plug-in hybrid will hit dealerships later this year.
But fuel economy isn’t the Ioniq’s only selling point. Compared to the segment-leading Toyota Prius, the Hyundai looks and feels familiar—which should appeal to the sort of buyer who wants an efficient hatchback, but doesn’t like the Prius’ futuristic styling.

Love this car. The moment we sat in it we loved how it drove. The interior is very nice for the cost and has Apple car play, blind spot indicator and great mileage. We drove it right away on a 2.5 hr trip and it was pretty comfortable. Definitely recommend this if you’re moving to a hybrid

Great little car! Smooth handling, great entertainment system with Apple/Android play. Very roomy, even in back. I wish it came with a trunk cover. Also, as many reviewers said, you have to start braking at an earlier distance.

Car layout is familiar to my Sonata and enjoyable. Rear window view is slightly obscured by a divider, similar to other hatchbacks with sloping rear window. If that wasnt the situation, Id rate it 5/5 stars.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid a good car?
Yes — 4.5/5. The expert rating is 7.33/10, and the model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Technology. The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is aimed at you if you want an efficient hatchback that feels conventional rather than futuristic, with a familiar layout and a practical, no-nonsense personality. Its biggest strength is fuel economy, with Hyundai citing 55 mpg, and it’s positioned as a straightforward alternative for shoppers who care more about saving fuel than making a styling statement. The market signal is also decent, with 36.4% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Hyundai backs the Ioniq with a 10-year powertrain warranty and a lifetime hybrid battery warranty, which adds confidence for used buyers who want lower ownership risk. The car’s hybrid setup is described as responsive and its brakes as smooth, which supports the impression of a well-sorted everyday commuter. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the car has been maintained properly and that the hybrid system and related components have been cared for over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid?
At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important. You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, and any signs of prior repair. Because this is a hybrid, it also makes sense to focus on overall condition and how well the car has been maintained, especially if you’re trying to maximize the ownership advantages that make the Ioniq appealing in the first place.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The entry-level Blue gives you dual-zone climate control, a proximity key, satellite radio, and the best fuel economy at 57 mpg city and 59 highway. The SEL adds heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a 7-inch LCD display in the gauge cluster, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Limited adds leather seats, and the Ultimate Package brings premium audio, wireless smartphone charging, a power driver’s seat with memory, and some active safety options.
- Powertrain: The Ioniq uses a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission instead of the more typical hybrid eCVT, and it feels more responsive than many hybrids. It’s tuned for comfortable highway cruising, though there can be a slight lag when you accelerate hard from a stop.
- Safety package: Lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and smart cruise control are available, but they cost extra. On the SEL, active safety can be added through the Tech Package; on the Limited, it’s bundled into the Ultimate Package. On the Blue, active safety isn’t available at all.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across all trims. The Limited adds an Infinity sound system and BlueLink telematics, which lets you check on and remotely start the car from your smartphone or smartwatch.
- Fuel efficiency: Hyundai says the Ioniq Hybrid offers 55 mpg, and the Blue is rated at 57 mpg city and 59 highway. The SEL and Limited share 55 city/54 highway ratings.
Which 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is offered in 3 trim levels: Blue, SEL, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Blue: This is the value play if you want the lowest starting price and the best fuel economy. You still get dual-zone climate control, a proximity key, satellite radio, and standard smartphone integration, but active safety isn’t available here.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim. It adds heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a 7-inch gauge-cluster display, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and it can be equipped with the Tech Package for active safety features.
- Limited: This is the most upscale choice, with leather seats and the option for the Ultimate Package, which adds premium audio, wireless smartphone charging, a power driver’s seat with memory, and active safety features.
If you want the best balance of equipment and value, the SEL is the trim to focus on. If safety features matter most, pay close attention to the package structure, since they are not standard on every trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid?
The market looks moderately favorable if you’re a selective buyer.
- Deal availability: 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 77 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 71.4% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts. The Ioniq had not yet been rated by NHTSA or IIHS in the source material, so there are no crash-test results to cite here. Standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera, stability control, and seven airbags. Lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and smart cruise control are available, but they are not standard on every trim, and the entry-level Blue does not offer active safety at all.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Hyundai says the Ioniq Hybrid offers 55 mpg, and the car is positioned as a conventional-feeling hybrid hatchback for buyers who want efficiency without flashy styling.
The bottom line: If you want a used hybrid hatchback that emphasizes fuel savings, familiar controls, and a straightforward driving experience, the 2017 Ioniq Hybrid is a sensible pick. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, the Blue makes the strongest efficiency case, but the SEL is the better all-around buy because it adds useful comfort and convenience features without pushing the price as high as the Limited.
