CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Hyundai Sonata

Summary
With 1,419 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,034.00, 27.7% of 2017 Hyundai Sonatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Hyundai Sonata 4.36 / 5 stars.
52.6% of 2017 Sonata models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a midsize sedan that tries to deliver a lot of car for the money. It was part of the seventh generation, which was designed to be tech-forward and efficient while still keeping an affordable price tag. That formula gives the Sonata broad appeal for shoppers who want a comfortable, well-equipped sedan without moving up to a pricier class leader.
For 2017, the Sonata offered generous standard equipment and a growing list of safety tech. By that year, all but the base model had 7- or 8-inch touchscreens, and available features included lane departure warnings, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, parking sensors, and other equipment. Hyundai also improved the interior quality and materials, making the cabin feel more premium than the price suggested. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available later in the model run, adding to the car’s everyday usefulness.
At the same time, the 2017 Sonata has a few important drawbacks buyers should know about. Consumer Reports gives the 2017 model a well below-average reliability rating, with concerns centered on excessive oil consumption and premature wear in the Theta II engine family. It is also one of the 2010s-era Hyundai models vulnerable to theft, which can mean extra precautions and higher insurance costs. Even so, its affordability, comfort, and equipment make it an appealing used-car choice for shoppers who prioritize value and features.

I bought a Sonata with the SE trim, so no power seats, blind spot indicator, heated seats or anything like that. However, it does have TPMS, Apple CarPlay, great backup camera, lots of rear seat leg room and is very solid and comfortable. Gets great gas mileage too! Overall, an excellent value.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Generally — the 4.36/5 user rating points to a car that many shoppers find worthwhile. Drivers commonly praise its dependability, affordability, and smooth driving experience, and the value-for-money appeal lines up with its role as a comfortable, well-equipped midsize sedan. That makes it a strong fit if you want a practical daily driver with a lot of features for the money. With 27.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights dependability and a trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with several noting that the car feels like a reliable value over time. At the same time, some owners mention concerns tied to higher-mileage vehicles, so long-term ownership risk is worth weighing carefully before you buy.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Sonata?
At 52.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and how well the car has been maintained, since those details matter more when the market includes a sizable number of incident history listings.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $10,041 sits slightly below last year's $10,401.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can limit upside if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the key is buying well now and keeping the car in strong condition so you can protect as much value as possible later. A well-priced purchase today gives you a better chance of minimizing depreciation pressure over your ownership period.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.47% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,571, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,041 average.
- It is a capable, well-rounded sedan that emphasizes comfort and fundamentals.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $12,041, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $10,041 average.
- It adds more technology, powertrain variety, and a stronger value story.
The bottom line: The 2017 makes sense if you want a value-focused Sonata with decent market availability and a favorable price trend. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2016 is the better budget path; if you want more features and are willing to pay up, the 2018 is the stronger upgrade path.
