CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Hyundai Sonata

Summary
With 1,455 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,021, 27.1% of 2017 Hyundai Sonatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Hyundai Sonata 4.36 / 5 stars.
52.5% of 2017 Sonata models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a midsize sedan that was built to offer a lot of car for the money. It was part of the seventh generation, which was meant to be a tech-forward and efficient sedan with an affordable price tag, and it came with generous standard equipment for the class. Standard features included a 3.5-inch LCD screen, blind spot monitoring, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, and a tilt-and-telescope wheel, while later in the model run the optional 8-inch touchscreen added Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. That combination of value, equipment, and comfort is a big part of the Sonata’s appeal.
It also offered a broad range of powertrains and trims, including a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, a 1.6-liter turbocharged four, and a turbocharged 2.5-liter four in the Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T. The hybrid arrived for the 2016 model year and added another efficiency-focused option, with the standard Hybrid and plug-in hybrid both joining the lineup then. Safety was another strength: the Sonata earned Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ designations from IIHS every year it was on sale in this generation. Buyers should still weigh the drawbacks, though, because this generation is known for engine trouble and theft vulnerability, and Consumer Reports gives the 2017 and 2018 models well below-average reliability ratings.

I bought a Sonata with the SE trim, so no power seats, blind spot indicator, heated seats or anything like that. However, it does have TPMS, Apple CarPlay, great backup camera, lots of rear seat leg room and is very solid and comfortable. Gets great gas mileage too! Overall, an excellent value.

Generally — the 2017 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.36/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers commonly praise its dependability, affordability, smooth driving experience, and good gas mileage, while also noting its value for the price. For you, that makes it a sensible midsize sedan if you want a practical, tech-forward car with broad everyday appeal. With 28.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights dependability and a trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, along with praise for its affordability and smooth driving feel. That said, some owners mention concerns tied to higher-mileage vehicles, so you should pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure you avoid examples with unresolved engine or theft-related issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Sonata?
At 53.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic. Focus on signs of prior damage, uneven panel gaps, warning lights, and evidence of deferred maintenance. Because this model year has known concerns, condition and documentation matter more than mileage alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can find value if you compare listings carefully.

- Inventory: There are 1,436 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.57% compared with last year.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $10,019 sits slightly below last year's $10,499.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can also mean future sellers may face more competition when it is time to trade in or list the car. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect your exit value. A clean history and solid maintenance record matter even more when the broader market is trending down.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.57% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,369, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,019 average.
- It is a sensible, well-rounded family sedan with strong comfort and value.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $12,044, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $10,019 average.
- It adds more technology and a broader range of powertrain choices.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the better fit if you want a balanced mix of price, owner satisfaction, and available deals. If your priority is spending less, the 2016 is the smarter value play; if you want newer features and are willing to pay more, the 2018 is the upgrade path to consider.
