CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Niro
overall

Summary
With 111 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,909, 35.1% of 2017 Kia Niros for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Niro 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
55.9% of 2017 Niro models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Niro stands out by trying to make a hybrid feel less like a compromise. Kia positioned it as an all-new hybrid that was just reaching dealer lots, and the appeal was broader than fuel economy alone. Its crossover-like styling gives it a different look from the wedge-shaped hybrid image many buyers expect, and the overall package was aimed at people who wanted comfort and practicality along with efficiency.
That balance is the Niro’s main strength. The summary highlights a comfortable interior and a spacious rear seat, along with a promise of up to 50 mpg combined. At the same time, Kia’s effort to give the Niro mass appeal came with compromises on fuel economy and practicality, so it was not presented as an outright leader against some better-known rivals.

I have owned a Niro since 2020, and they are definitely a good investment. Though it costs a little more to purchase due to being a hybrid, you more than compensate with smooth ride and excellent gas mileage.

The kia niro looks to be a suv. But its a compact SUV with very little backseat room..its too small unless youre looking for a compact suv. Didnt like the roadnoise on our test drive

How much does the 2017 Kia Niro cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,921 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,063 |
| Year-Round High | $11,395 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,195 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.45% |
Prices have softened 2.45% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 110 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2017 Kia Niro a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Kia Niro earns a 4/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Technology.
The Niro is aimed at you if you want a hybrid that leans into comfort and practicality instead of feeling like a pure economy car. Its crossover-like styling, comfortable interior, and spacious rear seat make it appealing if you want everyday usability along with efficiency, while the hybrid setup is designed to deliver up to 50 mpg combined.
That said, the same effort to broaden its appeal also brought compromises in fuel economy and practicality versus some rivals. 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Kia Niro reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Niro’s hybrid system is described as smooth and well integrated, with brisk initial acceleration and no shudder when the gasoline engine kicks in. Its brake feel is also more predictable and smooth than on some other hybrids, which is a good sign for day-to-day dependability.
Kia also built in useful ownership tech, including Uvo reminders for scheduled maintenance and dealer appointment scheduling. For a used buyer, the main long-term risk is making sure the hybrid system, brakes, and electronics have been cared for consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Niro?
At 56.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple trims or higher-mileage examples. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the hybrid and tech features work as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The entry-level FE and midrange LX and EX trims are not as lavishly appointed, while Touring trim adds leather seats and a quieter cabin feel.
- Powertrain: The Niro pairs a 104-hp, 1.6-liter gasoline engine with a 43-hp electric motor and a 1.56kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, routed through a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
- Safety package: Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the EX and Touring, but not available on the FE or LX. Automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and smart cruise control are optional on the LX, EX, and Touring, but not available at all on the FE.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard even on the FE, along with a standard 7-inch touchscreen. Touring adds an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation and a premium 8-speaker sound system with subwoofer.
- Fuel efficiency: The Niro is described as promising up to 50 mpg combined, and the hybrid setup is presented as a strong efficiency play.
Which 2017 Kia Niro trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Niro is offered in 4 trim levels: FE, LX, EX, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- FE: This is the simplest way into the Niro, but it still gives you standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 7-inch touchscreen, and Uvo. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost entry point and can live without the extra convenience and safety features found higher up.
- LX: This trim adds pushbutton start with a smart key, making it the best-value pick if you want a more complete daily-driver experience without jumping to the pricier trims.
- EX: This is the trim to target if you want a better-equipped Niro, since it adds heated front seats and outside mirrors, plus blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Touring: This is the most upscale version, with leather seats, an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, and a premium 8-speaker sound system with subwoofer. It suits you if you want the most comfort and tech in the lineup.
For safety, blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the EX and Touring, but not available on the FE or LX.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Niro?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 110 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.45% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,063, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Niro's resale value?
The current average of $10,921 sits slightly below last year's $11,195.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you may be able to preserve value better than the broader market trend suggests.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Niro safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Niro has not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA. Kia did give it a useful set of available driver-assistance features, including blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert on the EX and Touring, plus optional automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and smart cruise control on the LX, EX, and Touring.
The main safety caveat is that the most popular active safety features do not come standard, and they are not available at all on the FE. If safety tech matters to you, you should focus on higher trims or a well-equipped example.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Niro or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.45% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 Niro is an all-new hybrid that emphasizes comfort, practicality, and crossover-like styling while still promising up to 50 mpg combined.
The bottom line: The 2017 Niro makes sense if you want a comfortable, efficient hybrid crossover and you’re willing to shop carefully for condition and equipment. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the softer market and decent deal availability make this a reasonable year to target; if you want the most features, look for a higher trim rather than stretching for the cheapest example.
