Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Sportage 4.82 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Sportage stands out in the compact-crossover crowd by refusing to be dull. Kia gave it bold styling, and that distinctive look is paired with a sporty ride and strong technology, which helps the Sportage feel more engaging than many of its rivals. It also aims to deliver the practical advantages buyers expect from this segment, including the ride height, available all-wheel drive, and added cargo space that make crossovers so appealing.
What makes the 2017 Sportage especially attractive is the way it blends everyday usefulness with a more lively personality. The source material describes it as offering solid value, and owners echo that impression by praising its comfort, handling, panoramic sunroof, and safety technology. The main tradeoff mentioned is fuel efficiency, which some owners wished were better, but for shoppers who want a crossover with style, comfort, and a bit of fun, the 2017 Kia Sportage has a clear identity.

Car was amazing. It had more power than it need...which was good. It was in excellent condition with extremely low miles for a vehicle that was 5 years old. It wasnt missing anything that I can think of. I would compare this vehicle to a top of the line sport model of a Hyundai Santa Fe or Honda CRX/Element

Great vehicle! Comfortable, responsive, good road visibility. Heated seats and power driver seat are a great feature along with the climate control and Apple Play. Perfect fit for our family. Good value for the type of vehicle we were shopping for.

I feel like I got a great car at a fantastic price! I did my homework and feel like I can trust this brand. It is just as nice and equipped as my sisters Honda CRV. Its has a better reliability factor than my Jeep Patriot. Looking forward to traveling in this car.

If you find a listing below $11,097.18, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Kia Sportage a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Kia Sportage earns a 4.82/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfort, handling, and features like the panoramic sunroof and safety technology. They also point to good value and reliability compared with other brands, which lines up with the Sportage’s practical, everyday-use appeal.
The overview frames it as a compact crossover that blends style, comfort, and a more lively personality than many rivals, so it fits you well if you want something useful without feeling plain. With 26.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Kia Sportage reliable?
Owners rate it 4.82/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliability and good value compared with other brands, and it also suggests the Sportage is a vehicle many people feel comfortable keeping for the long haul. That kind of praise matters because it usually reflects day-to-day dependability rather than just first impressions.
Kia also backs the Sportage with a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year, 60,000-mile basic warranty, which adds confidence for ownership. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior maintenance and wear items have been kept up, since a strong reputation does not replace a careful inspection.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Sportage?
At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, and signs that safety systems or electronics may have been repaired after a collision.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX is the entry point, while the EX adds more convenience and tech, and the SX Turbo brings the strongest performance and the most upscale equipment. The base model is the one most likely to leave you wanting more, especially if you care about infotainment and driver-assistance features.
- Powertrain: The LX and EX use a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 181 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, while the SX Turbo uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four with 240 horsepower in front-wheel-drive form and 237 horsepower with all-wheel drive. The base engine is described as lackluster, while the turbo is quick.
- Safety package: The Sportage includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and forward-collision avoidance. Those high-tech features are not available on the base model, and adaptive cruise control is not offered at all.
- Infotainment: The base touchscreen is 5 inches, with 7- and 8-inch screens available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are optional on the LX and standard on the EX and SX Turbo, and UVO eServices adds smartphone-connected features.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine returns 23 mpg city, 30 highway, and 26 combined with front-wheel drive, or 21 city, 25 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive. The turbo gets 21 city, 26 highway, and 23 combined with front-wheel drive, or 20 city, 23 highway, and 21 combined with all-wheel drive.
Which 2017 Kia Sportage trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Sportage is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, SX Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry trim, and it gives you the core Sportage experience at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the styling, space, and basic tech without paying for extras, but it is also the trim most likely to feel stripped down because the higher-end safety and infotainment features are not standard here.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more of the features that make the Sportage feel modern, including standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you want a balanced mix of equipment and price, this is the one to focus on first.
- SX Turbo: This is the performance-oriented choice, with the turbocharged engine, paddle shifters, and the most powerful setup in the lineup. Buy this if you want the quickest Sportage and are willing to pay more for it.
The safety-tech suite is not available on the base model, so if those features matter to you, avoid the LX.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Sportage?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,100 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.59% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,097.18, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Sportage's resale value?
The current average of $11,401 sits slightly below last year's $11,585.
That kind of softening suggests the Sportage has become a bit easier for buyers to negotiate on, which can work against a seller trying to maximize return. If you own one, pricing it competitively will matter more than ever, especially if you want to move it quickly.
The good news is that the Sportage still has a strong value story, and that can help support demand when you go to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.82/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Sportage safe?
The Sportage is an IIHS 2017 Top Safety Pick and earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The Sportage comes with front and side impact airbags, traction control, a reversing camera, LATCH child-seat anchors, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and forward-collision avoidance. The catch is that you cannot get adaptive cruise control at all, and the high-tech safety features are not available on the base model.
It also has a few safety-related weak spots: IIHS gives it an Acceptable score for LATCH ease of use and a Poor score for headlight testing. That means the overall safety picture is strong, but you should still pay attention to trim level and lighting performance.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sportage or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.59% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.82/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out for its bold styling, sporty ride, strong technology, and solid value.
The bottom line: If you want a used Sportage with a distinctive look, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that still offers some negotiating room, the 2017 is a sensible target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can shop aggressively for the best-condition example and use the softened pricing to your advantage.
