CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack
overall

Summary
With 196 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,398.00, 34.2% of 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltracks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
67.9% of 2017 Golf Alltrack models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Think of the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack as a German Subaru Outback, but more fun to drive. That comparison captures its basic appeal: it takes the familiar wagon formula and adds all-wheel drive, SUV styling cues, and a slightly raised suspension to better handle a range of daily driving needs. The result is a car that stands out for buyers who want practicality without giving up a more engaging feel behind the wheel.
Its strengths are rooted in that simple recipe. The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is presented as a tried-and-true approach rather than something radically new, and that familiarity is part of the charm. It should appeal to shoppers looking for a versatile wagon with a more adventurous look and the added confidence of all-wheel drive. At the same time, the available owner feedback suggests the car’s handling and comfortable interior are major positives, while tire concerns and the absence of features such as blind spot detection may be drawbacks for some buyers.

Amazing traction, beautiful interior, good German engineering. Great value. Doesnt have sensors for cars getting too close or blind spot detection

For my purposes, the Golf Alltrack is a near perfect vehicle. It is not gross and large, yet its interior room is greater than many SUVs. The handling is responsive and sure. While there was no means of testing the Alltrack capabilities, I would assume that it would meet situations of snow with great aplomb. The acceleration and driving characteristics were excellent. Fit and finish both inside and out were equally superb. Unless you absolutely NEED an offroad vehicle (and exactly how often are you really going to use that offroad potential that you were seduced into buying?) I cannot imagine a better or more practical vehicle. The car is a good value. For those who want an automatic transmission, it is available. I would place the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack far ahead of the Subaru offerings in both handling, acceleration and fit and finish.

Hard to find an all wheel drive wagon with a manual transmission. A blast to drive.

Actually fun to drive. Steering firms up nicely in custom setting. Though it leans in the twisties it doesnt feel tippy, tracks through with virtually no understeer. Avoid ludicrous speed setting in custom. No mechanical issues. With the DSG transmission(SE & SEL), beats the snot out of the Outback. Avoid oem tires, probs with SE delaminating Continentals, Falkens are just terrible in all respects. once switched to Michelin Pilot A/S performance is way enhanced. VW killed the GOLF at least for US. Im certain the make more $ on the Tiguan, which is the entry soccer mom model. May buy another to keep in CO. For us (both the SE & SEL-yup two) we have keepers ie 125-50k.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that you should be selective about condition and maintenance history, especially because some shoppers have flagged tire concerns and the model’s reputation can make upkeep more important to verify.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack?
At 65.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been driven on rough roads or used in winter conditions. Pay close attention to tire condition, suspension wear, and any signs of prior bodywork or undercarriage damage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S is the base model and starts with the core AWD setup, hill-descent control, off-road driving mode, and a 1.2-inch suspension lift. The SE adds a panoramic sunroof, premium sound system, keyless entry with push-button start, and rain-sensing wipers, while the SEL brings the most comprehensive infotainment system, power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and larger 18-inch wheels.
- Powertrain: The Alltrack uses a turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine with 170 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. The DSG transmission adds paddle shifters and a Sport mode, and the broad torque curve helps the car feel responsive in everyday driving.
- Safety package: Adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking are offered on all versions. The SEL is the only trim with lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are unavailable.
- Infotainment: The SEL’s Discover Media system includes smartphone projection, satellite radio and data services, Car-Net apps and subscription services, and navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are recommended for easier day-to-day use.
- Fuel efficiency: The Alltrack returned 24.8 mpg on the test loop and averaged 26 mpg over a week of driving. The EPA says it will get 25 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack trim should I buy?
The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, SEL.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Alltrack formula with AWD, the raised ride height, and the off-road-oriented hardware. If you want the least expensive way into the model and are comfortable with fewer comfort and convenience features, this is the one to start with.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a panoramic sunroof, premium audio, keyless entry with push-button start, and rain-sensing wipers without jumping all the way to the top model. It also gets the Fender premium audio system, which is standard on the SE and SEL.
- SEL: This is the most fully equipped version, with the best infotainment setup, power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and larger 18-inch wheels. If you want the most upscale Alltrack experience, this is the trim to target.
The SEL is also the only trim with lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, so if those safety features matter to you, that trim deserves special attention.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and focused.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 201 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.55% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,934.27, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack's resale value?
The current average of $13,409 sits slightly below last year's $14,048.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also mean future resale gains are limited unless you choose carefully. If you’re planning to sell later, condition and documentation will matter a lot, especially for a model where buyers may already be selective about history and maintenance.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack safe?
It earns top scores from the federal government and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen equips the Alltrack with automatic post-collision braking as standard, along with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking on all versions. The SEL also gets lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist.
A notable shortcoming is that blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are unavailable, so you should not assume every desirable driver-assistance feature is covered. The available Car-Net Security and Service subscription package adds automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and Family Guardian speed and boundary alerts.
Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.55% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review highlights a tried-and-true wagon formula with all-wheel drive, SUV styling cues, and a raised suspension that makes it a practical and engaging daily driver.
The bottom line: If you want this model’s mix of practicality, all-wheel drive, and fun-to-drive character, the 2017 is a solid place to focus your search. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can wait for a cleaner listing or a better deal, but the current market already gives you enough inventory and enough discounting to shop selectively rather than passively.
