Why it stands out
The 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In stands out as a 50-state plug-in hybrid that pairs electric driving with gas-powered range, giving it a broad everyday appeal. According to the test-drive summary, it offers 47 miles of electric driving and another 293 miles of gas-powered driving range, which helps explain why it is presented as a car that avoids range anxiety. It also brings genuine room for five people and a fairly big trunk, making it more practical than its unusual profile might suggest.
That practicality is part of what makes the 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In distinctive: it is not just an efficiency-focused commuter, but a car meant to work for real passengers and cargo. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its performance, good power, quiet ride, and excellent fuel economy, especially when charging overnight. The main drawbacks mentioned are its exterior design and the size of the trunk, so while it has clear strengths in efficiency and comfort, its styling and cargo space may not satisfy everyone.

Great value..nice ride, good power and handling, overall well-designed.. .styling in the rear could use some improvement with the rear wheels. There could be a larger opening from the trunk through the fold down seats.

| Year-Round Low | $15,732 |
| Year-Round High | $18,605 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,422 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.07% |
Prices have softened 9.07% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 176 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
You get a car that combines electric driving with gas-powered range, which makes it appealing if you want to avoid range anxiety while still covering real-world trips. Owners repeatedly praise its performance, good power, quiet ride, and excellent fuel economy, especially when charging overnight. It also stands out for offering genuine room for five people and a fairly big trunk, which makes it more practical than its unusual shape might suggest.
The market also shows 31.8% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with repeated praise for its quiet ride, good power, and excellent fuel economy when charged regularly. The overall ownership experience described by drivers suggests a car you can count on for efficient commuting and routine travel.
The powertrain is built around a 17-kilowatt-hour battery pack paired with a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder gasoline engine, and the car is described as smooth, seamless, and quiet in electric mode. Honda also says the battery can be recharged in 2.5 hours on a 240-volt home charging station, which supports easy day-to-day use if you have home charging access.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the charging setup, battery behavior, and overall condition still match the car’s efficiency-focused mission.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a vehicle history report on any candidate, because accident-free status is not the same as a clean mechanical record. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks charging behavior, brake feel, infotainment operation, and the condition of the cabin and cargo area. Since owners mention the trunk size and exterior design as drawbacks, it also makes sense to inspect the cargo area carefully and make sure the car’s packaging works for your needs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Touring trim adds leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, simulated suede on the dashboard, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, navigation that can direct you to charging stations, and remote cabin climate pre-conditioning. The standard trim is the better value if you do not need those comfort and convenience upgrades.
- Powertrain: The car uses a 17-kilowatt-hour battery pack, an electric motor, and a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder gasoline engine for a combined 212 horsepower. It also offers Normal, Econ, Sport, and HV driving modes, plus deceleration paddles with four sensitivity levels.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed following, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and Road Departure Mitigation. It does not offer blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert, and instead uses Lane Watch for the right side.
- Infotainment: The system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, text-messaging support, Pandora compatibility, HondaLink services, and a HondaLink app for battery-charge status, estimated range, and cabin preconditioning. Touring trim adds navigation with HD traffic.
- Fuel efficiency: The car is rated at 110 MPGe in combined electric-and-gas driving and 42 mpg in combined hybrid driving. Honda also says it can travel 47 miles on electricity alone and 340 total miles before refueling or recharging.
Which 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In trim should I buy?
The 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In is offered in 2 trim levels: standard and Touring.
Here's the short version:
- standard: This is the trim to target if you want the Clarity’s core strengths at the lowest price. You still get the plug-in hybrid powertrain, Honda Sensing, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the car’s long electric-driving range, so it covers the essentials well. It is the best-value choice for most shoppers.
- Touring: This trim is worth considering if you want a more upscale cabin and more convenience features. It adds leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, simulated suede dashboard trim, an 8-way power driver’s seat, navigation for charging-station routing, and remote cabin climate pre-conditioning.
Honda Sensing is standard, but you still do not get blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert on either trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 176 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.07% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 75.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,732, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In's resale value?
The current average of $16,752 sits slightly below last year's $18,422.
That decline suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. The current range still leaves room for value retention if the car is well maintained and presented with strong documentation. Because the model has a clear efficiency story and practical everyday appeal, clean examples should continue to attract interest from shoppers who want low operating costs.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In safe?
The 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed following, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and Road Departure Mitigation. Honda also uses Lane Watch to help with the right-side blind spot, but there is no blind-spot monitoring system or rear cross-traffic alert.
The review notes that the vehicle had not been crash-tested at the time of writing, so there are no federal or IIHS ratings to cite here. That means you should lean more heavily on the standard driver-assistance package and the condition of any used example you consider.
Should I buy a 2018 Honda Clarity Hybrid Plug-In or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.07% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings a 50-state plug-in hybrid setup with 47 miles of electric driving and 340 total miles of range.
The bottom line: The 2018 model is the right path if you want the Clarity’s blend of electric commuting, gas backup, and roomy practicality at a softened price. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep an eye on listings near the low end of the range and focus on clean-history cars with strong charging and maintenance records.
