CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT
overall

Summary
With 177 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,110, 40.1% of 2018 Hyundai Elantra GTs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT stands out as Hyundai’s most competent hatchback to date, and it aims to hit a useful middle ground for daily transportation. It offers the kind of practicality that makes hatchbacks appealing, with more usable cargo space than a sedan, while still keeping the sporty driving dynamics and fuel efficiency that can be lost in a crossover. It also fits the value-minded side of the segment, since hatchbacks generally cost less than typical crossover SUVs.
What makes this car distinctive is that it feels like a more fully developed hatchback than Hyundai’s earlier effort in this space. The 2018 Elantra GT is described as a standout small car that is well suited to compete with the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus hatch, and Subaru Impreza wagon. Owners also tend to praise its handling, comfort, value, and city driving manners, along with its sporty hatchback design.
There are limits to keep in mind, though. Some drivers say acceleration can be lacking, especially at higher speeds. Even so, the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT’s blend of practicality, enjoyable driving character, and affordability gives it a clear identity for buyers who want something more versatile than a sedan without moving up to a crossover.

Acceleration is lacking but, overall, performance, comfort, mileage are good! Price was fair. Would recommend as a city car.

Base Elantra has good pick up 0-40 mph, but after 40 it strains. Base model is a good handling car and good value if buying it cheap. But new - people should opt for the turbo.. 2-3k more but includes better interior, push button, and way faster engine.

This car is great! I just need a small car, and prefer the versatility and sportiness of a hatchback. So far, seems to be a step up from my Ford Focus.

Is the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT earns a 4.6/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its handling, comfort, and value for money, and they also like its fun city driving character and sporty hatchback design. The overview points to a useful middle ground for daily transportation, with hatchback practicality, more usable cargo space than a sedan, and a value-minded price position versus many crossovers.
With 41.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable for everyday use, with praise centered on its good handling, comfort, and value. The expert review reinforces that it works well as a refined, dependable daily driver, especially in base-trim form.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some examples may have been driven hard or maintained inconsistently, so condition and service history matter more than the badge alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT?
At 56.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a car with a lower price or higher mileage. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim you expect. Because the market includes a fair number of non-clean examples, it pays to be selective.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, USB, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a 60/40 split-fold rear bench seat, SiriusXM satellite radio, and manually adjustable front seats. The Sport adds LED head- and taillights, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, heated front seats, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a more upscale cabin presentation.
- Powertrain: The Base uses a 2.0-liter inline four with 161 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. The Sport uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged four with 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual or an optional 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side-impact airbags, electronic stability control, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a reversing camera with dynamic guidelines. Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist are optional on the Base and standard on the Sport. Forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning are available on the Sport, but not on the Base.
- Infotainment: The cabin centers on an 8-inch Blue Link touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and the Tech Package adds navigation, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, Infinity premium audio, and a Qi wireless charging pad.
- Fuel efficiency: The Base is rated at 23 mpg city, 31 highway, and 26 combined with the manual, or 24/32/27 with the automatic. The Sport is rated at 22/29/25 with the manual or 26/32/28 with the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Which 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT trim should I buy?
The 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT is offered in 2 trim levels: Base and Sport.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the value play if you want the Elantra GT’s core strengths without paying for the turbo engine or the more upscale trim content. You still get the 8-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration, and the practical hatchback layout, and the expert review says the Base drives impressively well for the money. It’s the best-value trim if your priority is everyday usability and affordability.
- Sport: Choose this if you want the stronger 1.6-liter turbo engine, the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic option, the multilink rear suspension, and the richer feature set. It also brings standard blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist, plus available forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. This is the trim to target if you want the most complete version of the car.
The Sport trim gets the broader safety feature set, while the Base leaves some driver-assistance features unavailable.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT?
It looks like a buyer’s market, with pricing and inventory both giving you room to shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 41.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 172 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.97% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,762, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT's resale value?
The current average of $12,123 sits slightly below last year's $12,366.
That tells you the market has eased a bit, which can be good news if you’re buying now but a modest headwind if you plan to sell soon. A softer price trend usually means future resale gains may be limited unless the car is especially clean, well equipped, and well maintained. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect your exit value later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT safe?
The 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT has not yet been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front and side-impact airbags, electronic stability control, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a reversing camera with dynamic guidelines. Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist are optional on the Base and standard on the Sport. The Sport also offers forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning, while the Base does not get those options.
A key caveat is that the Base trim leaves some advanced driver-assistance features off the table, so if safety tech matters to you, the Sport is the better-equipped choice.
Should I buy a 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 41.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.97% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review says it’s a standout small car that hits a useful sweet spot of practicality, affordability, and enjoyable daily driving.
The bottom line: The 2018 is the right pick if you want the strongest blend of value, hatchback utility, and owner satisfaction in this generation. If you’re especially price-sensitive, shop carefully for a clean, well-kept example and focus on the Base for maximum value or the Sport if you want the fuller feature set and stronger performance.
