CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Hyundai Kona
overall

Summary
With 495 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,173.00, 30.7% of 2018 Hyundai Konas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Hyundai Kona 4.67 / 5 stars.
71.9% of 2018 Kona models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Hyundai Kona stood out in the subcompact SUV class by pairing distinctive styling with a strong value proposition. It launched with four trim levels, a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, and a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard, while all-wheel drive was optional across the lineup. Even in its most efficient form, the 2018 Kona with the 2.0-liter engine and front-wheel drive was EPA-rated at 27 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined.
What made the 2018 Kona especially appealing was how much equipment Hyundai packed in from the start. Standard features included 16-inch alloy wheels, a 3.5-inch screen in the instrument cluster, air conditioning, keyless entry, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Kona SEL added 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, satellite radio, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Kona Limited brought 18-inch alloy wheels, LED lights, leather upholstery, and a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with 175 horsepower and a dual-clutch gearbox. That turbocharged setup gave the Kona a more energetic character than many rivals in the segment.
At the top of the range, the 2018 Hyundai Kona Ultimate added even more technology and convenience. It included Hyundai Blue Link technology that worked with a smartphone app, a head-up display, an eight-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless phone charging, an Infinity premium audio system, and Hyundai’s Smart Sense safety system with forward collision warning and mitigation, lane keeping assist, and automatic high beams. The main tradeoff was space: the first-generation Kona was described as cramped inside and short on cargo space, so buyers drawn to its style, features, and available turbocharged performance had to accept a smaller cabin than some alternatives.

Very good performance, good features (auto-climate control, small size, phone conectivity).

Id compare this car to a Crosstrek. It feels solid and responsive has enough room for an adult passenger with a car seat in the back. Its a great value for the price which may be why I had trouble finding one that fit me. The crash ratings are also reassuring. The sport mode gives you some nice boost when/if needed and makes everything feel better while on the road. The lane assist is taking a little bit to get used to as it nudges steering to keep within the lines.

| Change vs. Last Year | −2.91% |
Prices have softened 2.91% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 527 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $12,295.81, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Kona a good car?
Yes — 4.67/5 is a strong user rating for this model year.
The 2018 Kona stands out in the subcompact SUV class by pairing distinctive styling with a strong value proposition. You also get a generous equipment list for the segment, including Bluetooth with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a rearview camera, and a touchscreen infotainment system from the start. If you want a small SUV that feels well equipped and offers available turbocharged performance, this model year fits that use case well. The main tradeoff is that it is described as cramped inside and short on cargo space, so it works best if style, features, and value matter more than maximum room.
30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Kona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2018 Kona’s appeal comes from its strong value, broad feature content, and straightforward powertrain lineup, which can make ownership feel predictable if the vehicle has been maintained well. Its available all-wheel drive and range of trims also give you flexibility to match the vehicle to your needs. For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is less about the concept of the vehicle and more about finding one that has been cared for properly, since condition and maintenance history will matter a lot in a compact crossover this age.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Hyundai Kona?
At 70.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was minor or structural. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection so you can check for signs of poor repairs, uneven wear, or neglected maintenance. Because the Kona is a small SUV with a tight cabin and limited cargo space, condition matters even more if you plan to use it as a daily driver.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Hyundai Kona?
This looks like a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s market.
- Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 527 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.91% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,295.81, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Hyundai Kona's resale value?
The current average of $13,140 sits slightly below last year's $13,534.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale performance will likely depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. If you keep the car clean, documented, and accident-free, you give yourself a better chance of holding value when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.91% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2018 Kona makes the most sense if you want the strongest value play and are comfortable shopping carefully for condition and history. If you are especially price-sensitive, this year can be a smart target because the market has softened and there is enough inventory to compare options. If you want to broaden your search, a nearby year may be worth considering, but the 2018 remains a solid choice when you prioritize features, value, and a distinctive small-SUV personality.
