Is the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar reliable?

The overview and owner feedback point to a vehicle that feels solid and desirable, but not one you should buy casually. Owners specifically mention concerns about reliability and long-term durability, even while praising the design and comfort.

The expert drive notes that the Velar is still a traditional, laid-back Land Rover, but it is far more agile than it appears, and its ride never becomes harsh or brittle. It also highlights a supercharged V6 with strong performance and smooth delivery, which supports the impression of a well-engineered luxury SUV.

If you’re shopping used, the main ownership risk is that the Velar’s appeal can be undermined by durability concerns, so a thorough inspection and service-history review matter more than usual.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar?

At 72.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has cosmetic damage or incomplete service records. Focus on condition, evidence of repairs, and whether the vehicle’s luxury features and electronics work as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base versions are not as well-appointed as higher-spec examples, while fully loaded versions add the richer presentation and equipment that make the Velar feel especially upscale.
• Powertrain: The gasoline V6 is the strongest choice, with 380 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque; the gasoline four-cylinder has 247 hp and 269 lb-ft, while the turbodiesel delivers 180 hp and 317 lb-ft with stronger low-end pull and better efficiency.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes auto braking with pedestrian detection, forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. The lane-keep assist does not actively steer the vehicle, and there is no semi-autonomous capability.
• Infotainment: The system includes onboard Wi-Fi, live weather, news, sports scores, and traffic, plus remote rear-seat folding through a smartphone app. The software can be buggy, with freezing screens and other glitches.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbodiesel is rated at 26 mpg city and 30 highway; the gasoline four returns 21 city and 27 highway; the V6 gets 18 city and 24 highway.

Which 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar trim should I buy?

The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar is offered in 3 trim levels: P250, P180, and P380.

Here's the short version:

• P180: This is the efficiency-focused choice, with the turbodiesel engine’s 180 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, plus the best fuel economy in the lineup. It makes sense if you want the Velar’s style and comfort with stronger low-end torque and lower running costs.
• P250: This is the entry point and the trim the base Velar is available with. It gives you the core Velar experience, but it is the least compelling if you want the strongest performance or the richest equipment.
• P380: This is the best-value pick if you want the Velar at its most satisfying, because it pairs the supercharged V6 with 380 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. It also aligns with the more upscale, fully loaded character that suits this SUV best.

Safety content notes that the Velar has not been rated by NHTSA or IIHS, and its lane-keep assist does not actively steer the vehicle.
