Why it stands out
The 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 stands out as a midsize sedan that aims higher than many of its peers. Mazda gave it a slight redesign, a new Signature trim, and the addition of a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine from the CX-9, all of which help the car reach toward a more upscale feel. The result is a Mazda6 that is meant to cover both value and luxury in one package, rather than leaning only on practicality.
That upscale ambition is reinforced by the redesigned interior and the new top-tier trim, which give the 2018 MAZDA6 a more premium character than its price might suggest. The turbocharged engine is a major part of its appeal, and owner feedback echoes that strength by praising the car’s powerful performance, comfortable ride, and well-appointed cabin. At the same time, the car’s mission is also its challenge: it is trying to compete with more expensive alternatives without the advantage of a luxury-brand badge.

Very impressionable features. Very good value for price. This vehicle is missing nothing, it's all there. This vehicle is top tier, it's up there with Honda and Toyota.

Love the car!! Ive been a Mazda fan for years and they just continue to improve. I purchased the Signature, and its fantastic. Loaded with features, tons of power thanks to the turbo, and a very very quiet ride. With snow tires on it also does well in the snow.

Easily one of the top choices in its segment. It drives and has an interior from a car that costs twice as much. Its very good looking outside as well. Its efficient, spacious, and reliable. And NOTHING DRIVES LIKE THIS. it feels amazing to be behind the wheel of one of these. Excellent car all the way around.

Is the 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 a good car?
Yes — you’re looking at a 5/5 user-rated sedan with an expert rating of 7.83/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise the stylish design, powerful performance, and comfortable ride. The turbocharged engine gets repeated positive mention for making the car fun to drive, and the interior is often described as upscale for the price. User feedback also points to strong value and reliability, which fits the MAZDA6’s role as a more refined alternative to a typical midsize sedan.
That makes sense if you want a sedan that feels more premium than its price suggests, especially if driving enjoyment and cabin quality matter to you. With 30.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s also a decent amount of market support for shoppers looking for value.
Is the 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback repeatedly points to reliability, dependability, and overall trouble-free ownership, with several drivers calling out the car’s long-term value. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the MAZDA6 is built to deliver value at the low end and luxury at the high end, which supports the idea that it’s meant to hold up well as a used purchase. The cost-effectiveness review also notes customer cash and loyalty bonus offers, reinforcing the model’s value-oriented ownership appeal.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well, since a premium-feeling sedan can still become expensive if prior care was inconsistent.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Mazda MAZDA6?
At 51.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a car with a lower price or a higher trim level. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, tire wear, and whether the equipment on the car matches the trim being advertised. If you’re shopping for the turbocharged version, confirm that the car has been maintained with the right fuel and service history.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport trim starts with a 2.5-liter engine, a 6-speed manual, standard LED headlights, push-button start, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and a rear-view camera. The Touring adds 19-inch wheels, keyless entry, a sunroof, auto wipers and high beams, heated front seats with driver power, faux leather, rear USB charging ports, and rear vents. The Grand Touring adds an upgraded infotainment system, an 11-speaker stereo, navigation, satellite radio, and the turbocharged engine. The Grand Touring Reserve adds a heated steering wheel, driver memory, real leather, rear-seat heat, front-seat ventilation, adaptive front lighting, and a head-up display. The Signature adds a gunmetal grille, digital cluster, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, Nappa leather, microfiber faux suede, and real wood trim.
- Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter engine makes 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, and it returns 26 city mpg and 35 highway mpg for 29 combined. The turbocharged 2.5-liter engine makes 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, reaches 60 mph in a little over 6 seconds, and returns 23 city, 31 highway, and 26 combined mpg.
- Safety package: The base Sport trim includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a rear-view camera. The available i-Activesense package adds forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise, and lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist.
- Infotainment: The MAZDA6 uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Mazda Connect, and smartphone integration arrives through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The available head-up display adds traffic sign recognition and turn-by-turn guidance, while the Signature trim adds a digital dash.

Which 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 trim should I buy?
The 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want standard blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a rear-view camera, LED headlights, push-button start, and an 8-inch touchscreen. It’s the trim that gives you the core MAZDA6 experience without pushing the budget too far.
- Touring: This is the best-value upgrade if you want the MAZDA6 to feel more like a near-luxury sedan, thanks to 19-inch wheels, keyless entry, a sunroof, heated front seats, faux leather, and rear-seat convenience upgrades. It’s the trim that most clearly broadens the car’s appeal without jumping all the way to the pricier models.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the turbocharged engine, upgraded infotainment, an 11-speaker stereo, navigation, and satellite radio. It’s the trim that adds the stronger performance character many shoppers will notice most.
- Grand Touring Reserve: This is for you if comfort upgrades matter most, since it adds a heated steering wheel, driver memory, real leather, rear-seat heat, front-seat ventilation, adaptive front lighting, and a head-up display. It’s the more upscale choice if you want a richer cabin experience.
- Signature: Pick this if you want the most luxurious MAZDA6, with Nappa leather, real wood trim, a digital cluster, parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera. It’s the top-end trim for shoppers who want the strongest premium feel.
The base Sport trim includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a rear-view camera, and the available i-Activesense package adds forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise, and lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Mazda MAZDA6?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and focused.
- Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 407 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.00% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 51.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,790, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Mazda MAZDA6's resale value?
The current average of $16,201 sits slightly below last year's $17,053.
That decline suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later, especially if you choose a clean, well-kept example. Strong demand for a car with this level of owner satisfaction can help support resale value over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 safe?
The 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 earns five-star ratings in all NHTSA tests except rollover and front passenger side tests, which earned four-star ratings.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The base Sport trim comes standard with blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a rear-view camera, and the available i-Activesense package adds forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise, and lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist. That means you can get a strong safety setup even on the lower trims, though you’ll need to pay extra for the full suite.
One caveat is braking performance, which the expert review calls disappointing compared with some rivals. That’s worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority, especially if you’re comparing cars on stopping distance as well as crash-test results.
Should I buy a 2018 Mazda MAZDA6 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.00% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda added a slight redesign, a new Signature trim, and the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine this year, which helped the car better cover both value and luxury territory.
The bottom line: The 2018 model is the one to target if you want the updated styling, the premium-feeling cabin, and the available turbocharged engine in a single package. If you’re more price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully and focus on clean, well-priced examples, but the 2018 stands out as the year where the MAZDA6’s upscale ambitions became most complete.
