Why it stands out
The 2018 Nissan LEAF stands out as the start of the model’s second generation, and it brought a much more modern look along with a meaningful step up in capability. Nissan released it with a larger battery that could deliver up to 150 miles of range, plus a more powerful drivetrain rated at 147 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. It also introduced e-Pedal technology, which let drivers rely heavily on regenerative braking for a one-pedal driving style.
The 2018 Nissan LEAF was also notable for its practical equipment and safety content. Forward collision warning and mitigation with automatic braking was standard, while available features included intelligent lane intervention, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross traffic alert. The SV trim added navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, NissanConnect, 17-inch alloy wheels, and adaptive cruise control, while the top SL trim brought a leather interior, a Bose audio system, a power driver’s seat, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. An optional Technology Package added Nissan ProPilot Assist.
At the same time, the 2018 Nissan LEAF still had some limitations that matter to shoppers. Its 6.6-kW onboard charger could replenish the battery in about eight hours on a Level 2 charger, and the car’s range was still modest compared with longer-range electric vehicles. If you are looking for a car to drive in the city only, this may be the car for you. We backed out of the deal when we learned that unlike other brands, the Nissan Leaf doesnt have a cooling system on the battery. This reduces the longevity of the battery, particularly for long commutes. The car we tried had lane assist but that feature is a little over the top for a city only vehicle. The battery is the biggest liability on an EV. Taking care of it should be the engineers top priority.

This car has great comfort, great technology, lot of cargo space in the trunk, higher doors (almost a compact-SUV (or CUV). But this car lack of decent range when driving on higway (perhaps between 150 to 200 km for the 40 KWh battery) and lack of thermal management system (no cooling nor heating of the high voltage battery) so expect some battery degradation over many years. It also lack of a software setting to set the max State of Charge (SOC) to 80% or 90% for daily commute (many other brands offer this set-in and forget it setting). So this car will always fully charge to 100% on Level 1 and Level 2 charging and this may contribute to higher battery degradation over many years (6-10 years).
