Summary
With 1,877 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,897.00, 32.8% of 2018 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.73 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out by shifting Volkswagen’s compact SUV formula toward everyday usefulness. It adds 58 percent more cargo space, and Volkswagen also focused on backseat room, the option of a third row, and the latest in-car and safety technology. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a compact SUV that feels more versatile and family-friendly than before.
That added practicality comes with a tradeoff. The Tiguan also loses some of the driving excitement that once made Volkswagens special, so it is less about personality and more about meeting the core needs of crossover shoppers. Even so, the combination of a spacious interior, useful features, and a comfortable ride helps explain why owners tend to value it highly.

Best vehicle for several features for safety, durability, and price. Great vehicle and great gas mileage. The only thing missing in the car is air conditioned seats. I would definitely buy another one.

Really great car for the value. Super tidy SUV with 3rd row seating, highly recommend going for the SEL for the interior package. Electronics are great, only minor downside is apple car play only works if youre plugged in via USB. Otherwise, very happy with the car and value.

The infotainment system is awesome. Great ride, this car is definitely up their with the Audi Q3 actually it has more initial power than the Q3. I don’t think the car is missing anything, just a all around great vehicle. So happy I purchased it.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,852 |
| Year-Round Low | $12,724.35 |
| Year-Round High | $13,877.18 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,879 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.40% |
Prices have softened 7.40% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,867 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $12,724.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 4.73/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.33/10. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, value for money, luxurious-feeling features, and comfortable ride. That lines up with the Tiguan’s use-case as a compact SUV for buyers who want more everyday usefulness, more backseat room, and available third-row flexibility than many rivals.
The market also shows 28.2% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.73/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers, with praise centered on value, comfort, and the sense that it can be counted on for daily use. The expert evaluation reinforces that this is a practical, family-friendly SUV built around space and convenience rather than drama.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge alone, so a careful pre-purchase inspection is still important.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 63.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, interior wear, and any signs of prior repair quality. Because this model is often chosen for family use and daily commuting, you’ll want to focus on how well the cabin, electronics, and safety equipment have held up.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim includes LED taillights, integrated roof rails, power/heated side mirrors, automatic headlights, trailer hitch preparation, and a 6-speaker stereo with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth connectivity. Higher trims add features like keyless access, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and premium audio, so the lower trims are the ones where you’ll feel the biggest equipment gap.
- Powertrain: The Tiguan uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic and front-wheel drive or 4Motion AWD. The expert notes that acceleration is sluggish unless you use Sport mode, so test-drive it in the kind of driving you actually do.
- Safety package: Forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the base trim but standard on all other trims. The Tiguan also includes dual front- and side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags, tire pressure monitoring, electronic stability control, and a reversing camera.
- Infotainment: The base trim gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while higher trims move to an 8-inch system with voice control. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available, and the top trim adds the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit.
- Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive model is rated at 22 mpg city, 27 highway, and 24 combined, while the 4Motion version is rated at 21 city, 27 highway, and 23 combined.
Which 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the least expensive way into the Tiguan, but it’s also the trim where you give up the most safety tech unless you add the optional driver-assistance package. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and are comfortable keeping the equipment list simple.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds keyless access, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a leatherette interior, and the larger 8-inch touchscreen. It’s the sweet spot if you want the Tiguan’s family-friendly strengths without stretching too far up the range.
- SEL: This trim adds navigation, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, remote start, a third USB port, and a power liftgate. Choose it if you want more convenience and driver-assistance features.
- SEL Premium: This is the most fully equipped version, with leather seating, ambient lighting, power-folding mirrors, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free liftgate, a 9-speaker Fender audio system, and additional safety tech. It suits you best if you want the most upscale Tiguan experience.
The safety package is especially important here because forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring are not standard on the base trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,867 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.40% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,724.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $12,852 sits slightly below last year's $13,879.
That softer pricing suggests the Tiguan has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you shop carefully and avoid overpaying, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Tiguan comes standard with dual front- and side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, electronic stability control, and a reversing camera. Forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the base trim, but standard on all other trims.
The SEL adds adaptive cruise control, while the SEL Premium adds a 360-degree camera, active blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning system, automatic high beams, and park distance control. That means the base trim is the one where you need to pay closest attention to safety equipment.
Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.40% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 model emphasizes space, backseat room, and available third-row flexibility while adding the latest in-car and safety technology.
The bottom line: The 2018 Tiguan makes the most sense if you want a roomy, practical compact SUV and you’re willing to shop carefully for condition and equipment. If you’re more price-sensitive, the softer market and decent deal availability make this a good year to target, but you should still prioritize history and trim level over simply chasing the lowest sticker.
