Why it stands out
The 2019 BMW 5 Series stands out as a midsize luxury sedan that still tries to balance performance with everyday comfort. In this generation, BMW had already moved the car toward a softer, more luxury-focused character, but the 5 Series still retained enough verve to feel more engaging than many of its staid competitors. It also came with a strong safety story, including standard blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings with lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams.
For 2019, the lineup included the 530i, 540i, 530e, 540d, and M550i xDrive. The 530i used a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the 540i used a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine with 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The 530e plug-in hybrid was part of the 2019 lineup, and the 540d diesel was also offered that year. BMW also made Apple CarPlay subscription-based in 2018, then killed the subscription fee in 2019, although Android Auto was still unavailable.
Inside, the 2019 5 Series offered a well-equipped cabin with plenty of technology, but some of that tech could be difficult to master. The model’s appeal came from its mix of upscale presentation, strong powertrain choices, and a driving feel that remained more athletic than many luxury sedans, even if reviewers noted that the steering and suspension in the 530i, 540d, and 540i did not feel as engaging as older 5 Series models. Owners also praised the design and the heads-up display, while some wished for more generous back seat space and more standard driver-assistance equipment.
