Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 4.41 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 stands out as a completely redesigned full-size pickup that was built to take on other half-ton trucks more directly. GMC describes it as bigger, more capable, and more useful than before, and that broad improvement is the core of its appeal. For buyers shopping in a crowded and highly competitive segment, the Sierra’s main draw is that it aims to deliver a more polished and more capable take on the traditional light-duty pickup formula.
What makes the truck distinctive is the way it combines that redesign with a more upscale feel. Owner feedback in the provided data points to a luxurious impression, strong performance, stylish design, and comfort as recurring strengths. At the same time, the same feedback suggests that price can be a concern, and some owners mention missing desired features and possible transmission issues. That mix makes the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 appealing to shoppers who want a refined, capable pickup, while also reminding them to weigh value carefully.

So far so good. The ford's have a much nicer dash set up in these yrs but the truck has lots of options and the tech seems ok. The paint on the front grill chips super easy but I like the truck

Is the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?
Generally — the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a 4.41/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its great features, luxurious feel, solid performance, stylish design, and comfort. That lines up with the truck’s redesigned, more polished approach to the full-size pickup formula, especially if you want something that feels more upscale than purely work-focused.
The market also shows 26.2% good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively rather than rush into the first listing you see.
Is the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.41/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a truck that feels solid and dependable, with praise for its long-term appeal, great features, and strong performance. The expert drive notes also support that impression by describing the Sierra as capable and improved across the board.
The performance write-up adds that the transmission never missed a beat in testing, which is a reassuring sign for everyday dependability. GMC also includes a 1-month trial for connected services, but that does not change the fact that used buyers should still watch for any transmission-related concerns mentioned by owners.
For used shoppers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the truck’s condition and service history are clean before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 GMC Sierra 1500?
At 71.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or visible wear. Focus on condition details that matter on a full-size pickup: drivetrain behavior, cabin wear, and any signs that the truck has been used hard.
Pay extra attention to whether the equipment level matches what you expect, since owner feedback mentions missing desired features on some trucks.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base, SLE, SLT, Elevation, AT4, and Denali span the lineup, with the Denali adding premium leather, open-pore wood trim, and real aluminum accents. The base truck is the most stripped-down, so check carefully for feature gaps if you want a more modern or upscale feel.
- Powertrain: The Sierra offers multiple drivetrains, including a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic and Autotrac 4WD in the test truck. GMC also highlights Dynamic Fuel Management for efficiency.
- Safety package: Driver Alert Package 1 adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. Driver Alert Package 2 adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights.
- Infotainment: All Sierras include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, GMC Connected Services through OnStar, and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. The test truck also had an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, a Bose premium sound system, and a head-up display.
- Fuel efficiency: The test truck’s EPA estimate is 17 mpg in combined driving, and real-world testing returned 15.4 mpg on one loop and 16.3 mpg over a week.
Which 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?
The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, SLE, SLT, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live without the richer features found higher up the range. It is the trim most likely to feel sparse if you care about comfort and convenience.
- SLE: This is the practical step up if you want a better balance of equipment and value. It builds on the base truck and is a sensible choice for shoppers who want more everyday usability without jumping too far in price.
- SLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it moves you closer to the Sierra’s upscale personality while keeping the lineup’s core strengths. It also serves as the foundation for the AT4.
- Elevation: This trim is for you if you want a customized look and a more distinctive appearance without going all the way to luxury-truck territory.
- AT4: This is the choice if you want the off-roading-oriented version of the Sierra lineup. It is the trim to consider if you want a more adventurous setup than the standard models.
- Denali: This is the luxury pick, with premium leather, open-pore wood trim, and real aluminum accents. It is the right choice if you want the most upscale Sierra experience and are willing to pay for it.
Driver Alert Package 2 is optional on the SLT, AT4, and Denali, so check carefully if you want the more advanced safety equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 GMC Sierra 1500?

- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.15% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $31,597.68, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?
The current average of $31,602 sits slightly below last year's $34,786.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment level rather than assuming the truck will hold its price automatically.
Because the Sierra still has strong shopper appeal and a premium reputation, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. The current pricing trend also gives you a useful benchmark for setting realistic expectations if you plan to sell later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.41/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Sierra includes or can be fitted with Driver Alert Package 1, which adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. Driver Alert Package 2, available on the SLT, AT4, and Denali, adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights.
A key caveat is that adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic braking, and lane-centering assist are not included on either package. The crashworthiness picture was also still unsettled at the time of the review.
Should I buy a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 26.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.15% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.41/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The redesigned Sierra is bigger, more capable, and more useful than before.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $26,219, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $31,602 average.
- It adds standard reversing camera and infotainment equipment.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $33,608, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $31,602 average.
- It blends SUV-like comfort with practical truck utility.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned truck and are shopping for value, the 2019 is the main path to consider because it combines strong owner satisfaction with a softer market. If your budget is tighter, the 2018 is the price-sensitive alternative, while the 2020 makes sense if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling truck with broader everyday appeal.
