overall

Summary
With 218 currently listed for sale and an average price of $30,728, 35.3% of 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLSs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS stands out first for its styling. Mercedes-Benz calls it its slickest sedan, and the third-generation CLS is described as just as striking as the original car was when it debuted. That visual drama is a big part of its appeal, especially for buyers who want a luxury sedan that feels more distinctive than conventional.
It also brings major changes to its engines, tech, and style, which helps it feel like more than just a design exercise. The CLS is said to claim a lead among luxury cars with superior technology and powertrains, and it comes with standard advanced safety features. On the road, it is praised for its great ride quality, but it is not without drawbacks: the back seat is cramped, the technology is unintuitive, and it is considered poor value for money.

Great power with exceptional handling. AMG features (sports seats, steering wheel) are definitely worth the extra money. The infotainment is a bit outdated despite the controls being very intuitive, and sound system is top notch! I was looking at the A7/S7 and thought this was a much better option.

Great car. Its a mercedes so repairs are expensive and the CLS is a little impractical in the back seat. But its a blast to drive and smooth and quiet.

The trade-offs are clear: the back seat is cramped, the technology is unintuitive, and it is considered poor value for money. Even so, 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The CLS is described as a refined, technically advanced luxury car with a smooth hybrid-assisted inline-6 powertrain and a ride tuned for comfort. Its powertrain is presented as inherently smoother than a typical V6, and the stop-start behavior is described as nearly seamless, with the air conditioning continuing to work normally when the engine shuts off.
That said, the car’s complexity and high-end hardware mean you should pay close attention to maintenance history and how well the electronics, suspension, and hybrid components have aged. For used buyers, the biggest long-term ownership risk is paying luxury-car repair costs on a vehicle that was already expensive and option-heavy when new.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS?
At 64.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any signs of prior bodywork or electronic issues. Focus on overall condition, because this is a high-end model where repairs and options can be expensive. Make sure the car’s technology, driver-assistance features, and suspension behave as expected during a thorough test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The CLS 450 4Matic is the base car, and the cabin is described as richly appointed with a lavish interior, ambient lighting, and high-end materials. The base setup already includes standard advanced safety features, so you are mainly deciding how much luxury and equipment you want beyond that starting point.
- Powertrain: The CLS uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 with a 48-volt hybrid system, and the electric motor can add up to 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. It is smooth and quiet in normal driving, though it can feel lazy in Comfort mode and the 9-speed automatic can be clunky on low-speed downshifts.
- Safety package: The Driver Assistance Package adds one of the best semi-autonomous systems in the business, with steering and braking assistance, lane changes when you hold the turn signal, and speed and curve adjustment. Standard safety equipment includes pedestrian and blind-spot detection, front and rear cross-traffic alerts, forward-collision alert, auto braking, and a driver-attention monitor.
- Infotainment: The standard setup includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus navigation with three years of map updates and live traffic. The instrument panel offers multiple display layouts, while onboard Wi-Fi and wireless charging are optional.
- Fuel efficiency: The rear-wheel-drive CLS 450 is rated at 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 26 combined, while the 4Matic version is rated at 23/30/26. The hybrid system also helps smooth stop-start operation and can shut off the engine while coasting in Eco mode.
Which 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS trim should I buy?
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS is offered in 2 trim levels: CLS 450, CLS 450 4Matic.
Here's the short version:
- CLS 450: This is the entry point, and it already gives you the smooth inline-6 hybrid powertrain, strong ride quality, and the CLS’s standout design. It is the best-value choice if you want the core experience without paying extra for all-wheel drive.
- CLS 450 4Matic: This is the better pick if you want all-wheel drive and a bit more traction confidence, especially if you expect to drive in tougher weather. It keeps the same luxury and tech strengths while adding the 4Matic system.
The Driver Assistance Package is optional, and it adds the most advanced safety and highway-assist features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 218 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.48% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $30,681, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS's resale value?
The current average of $30,681 sits slightly below last year's $33,525.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. Because the price trend has softened, future sellers may need to be more competitive on condition, mileage, and equipment to stand out. Well-kept examples with desirable options should still draw attention, but the model’s average resale outlook means you should not expect especially strong retention.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS safe?
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS has not been rated by NHTSA or IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety suite includes pedestrian and blind-spot detection, front and rear cross-traffic alerts, forward-collision alert, auto braking, a driver-attention monitor, advanced steering assistance, and a system that can prepare the cabin for an impending rear impact. Car-to-X connected warnings are also standard, and an optional system can help detect side impacts and inflate the seat bolsters.
The Driver Assistance Package adds semi-autonomous highway and lane-keeping capability, but it is not flawless and can make mistakes in real traffic. That means you should treat it as a helpful aid rather than a substitute for attentive driving.
Should I buy a 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.48% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 stands out for its striking design, strong technology, and standard advanced safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive version of this luxury sedan and you value its styling, tech, and comfort, the 2019 is the one to target. If you are more price-sensitive, you should focus on the best-condition examples and be selective about mileage, history, and options, since value is not this car’s strongest trait.
