Is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon a good car?

Generally — the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon earns a 4/5 user rating and an 8.7/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Form and function, and Cost effectiveness.

It stands out as a stylish alternative to the usual crossover SUV formula, aimed at you if you want roomy, practical transportation with added foul-weather traction but do not want to drive the same SUV everyone else has. The expert review also describes it as fun to drive and an excellent value for money.

The main trade-off is unintuitive technology, and the expert notes that some controls may take time to get used to. Another drawback is that the car’s quality and overall sophistication do not match luxury rivals.

The market shows 33.7% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Arteon is described as a practical, comfortable, and enjoyable car that can serve as an alternative to a 5-passenger crossover SUV while still offering AWD for foul-weather driving. The expert review also emphasizes that it is a cost-effective solution if you want more utility than a typical sedan without moving into a larger SUV.

Its performance notes point to a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, an 8-speed automatic, and available 4Motion AWD, all of which support confident everyday use. The cost-effectiveness commentary also highlights Volkswagen’s People First warranty coverage as part of the ownership picture.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the car’s technology and packaging choices may be less satisfying over time than its driving character and practicality.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Arteon?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with optional equipment. Focus on overall condition, because the Arteon’s appeal depends heavily on how well its style, comfort, and technology have held up.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SE gives you the core Arteon experience, while SEL adds navigation, Digital Cockpit, and adaptive headlights; SEL Premium adds parking steering assist, a surround-view camera, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. The base trim leaves out some of the more advanced convenience and safety features.
• Powertrain: The Arteon uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. It is tuned for real-world quickness and can return 23.9 mpg in combined driving on the expert test loop.
• Safety package: Every Arteon includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. SEL adds adaptive headlights, while SEL Premium adds automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes an 8-inch touchscreen, Car-Net App Connect, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirror Link. SEL Premium is the only trim with Car-Net subscription services and the premium audio upgrade.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert test loop returned 23.9 mpg combined, and the car is described as getting better gas mileage than a typical SUV while still offering AWD for foul-weather driving.

Which 2019 Volkswagen Arteon trim should I buy?

The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SEL, and SEL Premium.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the value play if you want the Arteon’s style, space, and standard driver-assistance features without paying for extras you may not need. It gives you the core package and is the best fit if you care most about getting into the model at the lowest cost.
• SEL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds navigation, Digital Cockpit, and adaptive headlights while keeping the Arteon’s strong mix of comfort and practicality intact. If you want the most useful upgrades without stretching to the top trim, this is the one to target.
• SEL Premium: Choose this if you want the most convenience and tech, including parking steering assist, a surround-view camera, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. It is the right pick if you want the most complete version of the Arteon.

Car-Net subscription services are tied to SEL trim and above, while the top trim also gets the most advanced parking and lighting features.

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 101 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.06% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 75.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,117, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon's resale value?

The current average of $18,592 sits slightly below last year's $19,379.

That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it is time to sell.

The Arteon’s broad appeal as a practical, stylish alternative to a crossover SUV should help keep interest steady among used shoppers. Its strong satisfaction rating also supports demand over time.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon safe?

The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon earns a Poor rating from IIHS headlight testing, which keeps it from earning a Top Safety Pick rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Arteon includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. SEL adds adaptive headlights, while SEL Premium adds automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.

The weak headlight performance is the main safety caveat to keep in mind when you are shopping used examples.

Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Arteon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.06% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 stands out as a stylish, practical alternative to the crossover SUV formula, with strong value and a fun-to-drive character.

The bottom line: The 2019 is the right pick if you want the Arteon’s style, practicality, and value in a year that already shows softer pricing and decent inventory. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep shopping listings carefully and focus on accident-free examples near the low end of the range.
