CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan

Summary
With 2,207 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,162, 32.9% of 2019 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.38 / 5 stars.
67.4% of 2019 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as a compact SUV that leans more toward space and refinement than outright ruggedness. It was introduced in 2017 for the 2018 model year as a significantly longer, seven-seat version of the Tiguan sold in other markets, and that extra practicality was a major part of its appeal. Volkswagen also positioned it as a mass-market choice, with some versions carrying a lower MSRP than the outgoing model. Under the hood, it used a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 184 horsepower, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while front-wheel drive remained standard and all-wheel drive was available.
Inside, the 2019 Tiguan offered a modern cabin with a sharp-edged design and a choice of 6.5-inch or eight-inch touchscreen infotainment systems depending on trim. It had vast space in the first two rows, and although the third-row seats were limited in legroom, they still added flexibility and folded away to create a huge cargo area. The tradeoff for that added size was a less responsive driving experience than the first generation, but it still felt solid and reassuring from behind the wheel. Reliability is also a consideration, as the model has been known to suffer from engine and electrical troubles, along with infotainment glitches.

I love my VW Tiguan SE for the panoramic sunroof and leather seats. The stereo system is pretty good, and the car is roomy and comfortable. Happy to have a third row for my family. Wish the trunk opened with the key fob bc it only unlocks it. Great value, def recommend!

We love it. It might miss a few functions like folding mirror, memory seats etc but a great SUV for the price. Runs great and we love the panoramic sunroof. Great value for the money

The car has pretty good features throughout the range. I have an SEL and it does what I would expect it to do. I think inflation has every car marked up right now, I dont ever recall a 4-year-old car costing this much. I would compare this to other small SUVs from Nissan, Toyota, and Mazda.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Generally — the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.38/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners commonly praise its spaciousness, good value, handling, fuel economy, tech, and comfort, with the panoramic sunroof standing out as a favorite feature. The Tiguan’s roomy cabin and flexible seating make it especially appealing if you want a compact SUV that prioritizes everyday practicality over a more rugged feel. With 32.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that many people can count on for everyday use, with satisfaction tied to its value, comfort, and practical packaging. At the same time, the model has been known to have engine, electrical, and infotainment issues, so used buyers should pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition. For long-term ownership, that means your risk is manageable if you verify the car carefully, but it is not a model to buy casually without a thorough check.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 68% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with accident or title concerns. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on engine behavior, electrical operation, and infotainment performance. You should also pay close attention to interior condition, seat comfort, and signs of wear, since those areas matter most in day-to-day ownership.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,168 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.51% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,173, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $14,180 sits slightly below last year's $16,024.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make future resale gains harder to count on in the near term. If you buy now, your best resale outcome will likely come from choosing a clean, well-kept example with strong documentation and desirable equipment. A lower entry price can help cushion depreciation, especially if you avoid overpaying for a higher-mileage or rougher listing.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.51% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $12,684, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $14,180 average.
- It emphasizes cargo space and family-friendly practicality.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $16,012, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $14,180 average.
- It adds three-row seating and extra passenger capacity.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, owner satisfaction, and market availability, the 2019 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2018 is the better value play, while the 2020 makes sense if you want the extra seating and are willing to pay more for it.
