Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW M2 stands out as a compact rear-wheel-drive sports coupe that was built around enthusiast appeal. It traces its roots to BMW’s M tradition, with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, a standard six-speed manual transmission or optional seven-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission, and a chassis tuned for excellent handling and roadholding. BMW also gave it big brakes, 19-inch wheels with sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, a rear-lip spoiler, quad exhaust tips, upgraded front seats, and carbon fiber trim, all of which reinforce its performance-first character.
For 2020, BMW built a limited-edition M2 CS with 444 hp, M Adaptive suspension, and optional carbon ceramic brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Carbon fiber exterior components reduced the CS model’s weight and increased performance. That makes the 2020 M2 especially appealing to buyers who want a small, engaging coupe with serious capability and a more focused, track-oriented variant in the lineup.
There are tradeoffs, though. The M2’s ride can be stiff in normal driving, and getting in and out takes a bit of effort. Even so, its combination of power, rear-wheel-drive balance, and everyday usability is what makes it distinctive.

Aside from the aftermarket spoiler that was put on this car (just not my taste), the M2 was made for people who love to drive. Even without the manual gearbox, it checks almost every other box youd want in a great driving experience. Steering lacks a little bit of feel, but other than that its hard to beat the throttle response and sonorous music coming from under the hood.

The 2020 M2 Competition replaces my 2017 M2 that was totaled. Love the S55 power, and I have always loved the M-DCT; its so much fun to drive!

| Average Price a Year Ago | $66,570 |

There are 91 listings available, which gives you a modest pool to compare before you buy.
Is the 2020 BMW M2 a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the 2020 BMW M2’s overview backs that up with a clear enthusiast focus. It is a compact rear-wheel-drive sports coupe built around a turbocharged inline-six, a manual transmission option, and a chassis tuned for excellent handling and roadholding. You also get performance-minded hardware and trim, plus a limited-edition M2 CS variant for buyers who want an even more focused track-oriented setup. If you want a small, engaging coupe with serious capability and everyday usability, this model year fits that brief well. 40.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 BMW M2 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2020 BMW M2’s overview suggests a car built with durable enthusiast priorities in mind: a proven turbocharged inline-six, rear-wheel-drive balance, and a chassis engineered for handling rather than excess complexity. Its tradeoffs are more about livability than mechanical character, with a stiff ride and some effort required to get in and out. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is finding a car that has been driven hard without the maintenance and care that performance use demands.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW M2?
At 73.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a shop that knows performance BMWs. Focus on signs of track use, uneven tire wear, brake condition, and any evidence that the car’s stiff suspension or high-performance hardware has been neglected. Because this model is built for enthusiast driving, condition matters as much as mileage.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW M2?
Yes — this looks like a buyer’s market if you’re shopping carefully and comparing listings.
- Deal availability: 40.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 91 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.98% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $55,076, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW M2's resale value?
The current average of $55,932 sits slightly below last year's $66,570.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained. Performance coupes can hold attention when they’re clean and well cared for, but rough examples tend to lose appeal faster. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW M2 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 40.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.98% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- It leans even harder into a focused, track-ready driving character.
The bottom line: The 2020 is the better primary pick if you want a strong mix of enthusiast appeal, current pricing softness, and a decent number of listings to compare. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2020’s lower average price and deal availability make it the more practical shopping target, while the 2021 is the better path if you want the next-year model’s even more focused personality.
