CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Hyundai Kona
overall

Summary
With 1,128 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,214, 32.8% of 2020 Hyundai Kona listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Hyundai Kona 4.68 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
72.2% of 2020 Hyundai Kona listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Hyundai Kona stands out in the subcompact crossover class because it puts style and driving enjoyment ahead of the usual value-first formula. Hyundai describes it as one of the smallest cars you can buy with all-wheel drive, and it competes with the lifted seating position and convenience-and-safety feature set crossover shoppers expect. In testing, its exterior style and on-road performance were singled out as spectacular, while the driving experience was praised as fun.
For 2020, the major changes were a new trim level and more standard driver assists. That helps make the Kona feel more up to date, but it still has clear compromises. Hyundai’s own summary says it is cramped and that the interior disappoints, and it also notes poor value for the money and not much cargo space. Even so, buyers drawn to a small crossover with distinctive looks and responsive handling may find those tradeoffs easier to accept.

The ONLY reason it got a 4 star is because I used have minivans. It's smaller, but AWESOME! Phone links right up and can use my driving apps and the seats are heated :) So easy to drive with all the safety features!

I enjoy driving this car. I like the sunroof, the leather seats, all the electronics and of course the colour. I do think this car is good value, and have not found yet what it might be missing. I cant make comparisons as I dont know that much about cars.

There are 1,119 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.68/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
You’ll see recurring praise for its fun driving experience, responsive handling, stylish design, good features, and fuel efficiency. In practical terms, that lines up with the Kona’s appeal as a small crossover that prioritizes personality and driving enjoyment over a purely value-first approach.
The trade-offs are just as clear: the interior is criticized for hard plastics and the cabin is cramped, and the cargo area is small. If you want a subcompact crossover with a lifted seating position, available all-wheel drive, and a lively feel on the road, the Kona fits that brief well. If you’re focused on space and interior polish, you may feel the compromises more sharply.
With 33.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.68/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as fun, efficient, and well equipped, and those themes usually support confidence in day-to-day ownership. The expert evaluation also points to a strong powertrain and chassis combination, with responsive acceleration and a drivetrain that feels eager and composed.
Hyundai’s long warranty and included oil changes add another layer of reassurance for used buyers. Even so, you should still budget for condition-related wear and verify maintenance history, especially because interior quality and space are not this model’s strengths.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
At 72.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lower price than the rest of the market. Focus on overall condition, interior wear, and evidence of consistent maintenance, since this model’s value depends heavily on finding a clean one.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE is the simplest version, while the SEL adds the convenience features many shoppers will want, including proximity entry, auto up/down windows, vanity mirrors, heated front seats, heated mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, tinted rear windows, blind-spot monitoring, SiriusXM satellite radio, and HD radio. The SEL Plus adds wireless charging, an eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with garage door openers, an eight-speaker Infinity stereo, and Blue Link connectivity. The Limited and Ultimate add more upscale equipment, with the Ultimate bringing the most features.
- Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 147 hp and 132 lb-ft, paired with a 6-speed automatic. The turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder makes 175 hp and 195 lb-ft and uses a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional with either engine.
- Safety package: Forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor come standard. The Kona also offers adaptive cruise control on the Ultimate, while pedestrian detection is limited to that trim. Some safety equipment is not universal across the lineup, so trim differences matter.
- Infotainment: The base model includes a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SEL Plus adds Blue Link connectivity, and the Ultimate upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0 AWD returns 26/30/28 mpg, while the 1.6T AWD is rated at 26/29/27 mpg. Front-wheel-drive versions can reach 30 mpg combined and up to 33 mpg highway.
Which 2020 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?
The 2020 Hyundai Kona is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the least expensive way into the Kona, but it’s also the most stripped-down. You get the 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, yet you miss several convenience features that make the higher trims easier to live with. It makes sense if your priority is keeping the purchase price low.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the everyday features many buyers will actually notice, including proximity entry, heated front seats, heated mirrors, blind-spot monitoring, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to target.
- SEL Plus: This trim builds on the SEL with wireless charging, an eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with garage door openers, an eight-speaker Infinity stereo, and Blue Link connectivity. It’s a good pick if you want more tech and comfort without jumping all the way to the top trims.
- Limited: This trim adds the turbo engine and leather upholstery, so it’s the first version that meaningfully changes the driving experience. Choose it if you want stronger acceleration and a more upscale feel.
- Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped Kona, with a sunroof, 8-inch navigation screen, auto high beams, and adaptive cruise control. It’s the right choice if you want the most features and don’t mind paying for them.
The safety package includes standard forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor, while pedestrian detection is reserved for the Ultimate.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,119 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.03% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 72.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,642, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Hyundai Kona's resale value?
The current average of $15,201 sits slightly below last year's $16,007.
That softer pricing suggests the Kona has become a more buyer-friendly used option, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract attention if they price competitively. The current trend also shows that the market is rewarding shoppers who wait for the right listing rather than paying a premium.
For resale, condition and trim will matter a lot. Better-equipped versions and clean-history examples should hold buyer interest more effectively than rougher, higher-mileage listings. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.68/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona safe?
The 2020 Kona earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with five-star ratings for driver and passenger in the frontal test and for driver and rear passenger in the side test, plus a four-star rollover rating. It also earns a 2020 Top Safety Pick from IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Forward emergency braking comes standard on every Kona, along with lane-keep assist and a driver attention monitor. Pedestrian detection is limited to the Ultimate, and the IIHS noted a lower score for detecting a person than another vehicle. Unlike some competitors, the Kona does not come with front knee airbags or rear side airbags.
Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.03% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.68/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 adds a new trim level and more standard driver assists.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $15,489, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $15,201 average.
- It adds a Night Edition with blacked-out styling.
The bottom line: If you want the better value right now, the 2020 is the smarter buy because prices have eased and the lineup gained useful standard safety equipment. If you care more about fresh styling and are willing to pay a bit more, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2020 remains the more compelling path.
