Overview

The Rolls-Royce Phantom is one of the most expensive, exclusive, and luxurious sedans in the world. It was last redesigned in 2017 and carries over for 2020. It competes primarily with vehicles from Bentley and Aston Martin, though there are plenty of other tempting options within the Rolls-Royce stables, as well.

There are no changes to the exterior, and it doesn’t need them. The Phantom’s boxy profile may look stodgy at first, but graceful details and high-tech lighting accentuate its timelessness. Since the array of available custom color combinations is nearly endless, there’s really no need for Rolls-Royce to make a fuss about palettes or other options; buyers know they can get what they want. An extended-wheelbase model is available.

The Phantom features a twin-turbocharged 6.8-liter 12-cylinder engine rated for 563 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) comes standard along with an air suspension system. Fuel-economy ratings stand at 12 mpg city, 20 highway, and 14 combined on premium fuel, of course.

Trim levels aren’t a factor here; buyers can get nearly whatever they want as long as their check clears. Adornments such as hand-stitched leather, a choice of genuine wood trim, and various metals are par for the course. Since the Phantom is designed more for passengers than the driver, interior configurations include lounge-style and sleeping-style seating.

The Phantom’s timeless yet modern exterior carries over to technology features, with elements like 12.3-inch infotainment displays and crystal-encrusted analog clocks coexisting. Navigation and a WiFi hot spot come standard, and there are tons of options in terms of audio and other features.

As is typical for ultra-luxury vehicles, the Phantom doesn’t undergo the typical battery of crash tests. However, plenty of safety features come standard. These include a surround-view camera system, front-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-change assist, active cruise control, driver-alertness monitoring, night vision, and a head-up display.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom conveys status like few other vehicles on the market, combining the brand’s old-world elegance with up-to-date technology and luxury features.
