Used 2020 Toyota Prius Prime for SaleNationwide

How much does the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime cost?

Prices are up 3.06% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.

There are 276 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime a good car?

Generally — the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.

Owners consistently praise its fuel economy, efficient performance, and useful features like adaptive cruise control. The ownership feedback also points to Toyota’s hybrid technology as a major strength, which fits the car’s efficiency-first mission.

The trade-offs are clear: the infotainment system is difficult to use, and cargo space is limited. That lines up with the car’s role as a practical plug-in hybrid for shoppers who care more about low running costs than polish or versatility.

With its focus on efficiency above all else, it makes the most sense if you want a mainstream plug-in hybrid that prioritizes fuel savings and value. The market shows 35.5% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to efficient performance and impressive hybrid technology, and it also suggests drivers can count on the car for everyday use. The expert evaluation reinforces that dependability angle by emphasizing Toyota’s long experience with hybrid systems and its proven, near-perfect hybrid powertrain.

ToyotaCare adds a useful ownership perk with 2 years/25,000 miles of maintenance and 2 years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the hybrid system and more about aging tech and condition-related wear.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Prius Prime?

At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, alignment, and interior condition. Because this model’s appeal is tied so heavily to efficiency and daily usability, you should also pay close attention to how the infotainment system, charging equipment, and cabin features function in real life.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base LE misses the larger touchscreen, while the XLE and Limited add a more upscale equipment mix; the Limited also adds blind-spot monitoring.
• Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup delivers strong efficiency, 25 miles of electric range, and 133 MPGe in electric mode, but acceleration is slow and the gas-electric system makes only 121 hp.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams; blind-spot monitoring is limited to the Limited.
• Infotainment: The 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen is standard on the XLE and Limited, unavailable on the LE, and the system supports Apple CarPlay but remains slow and dated.
• Fuel efficiency: The Prius Prime returns 55 mpg city, 53 highway, and 54 combined after the battery is depleted, and it reaches 133 MPGe in electric mode.

Which 2020 Toyota Prius Prime trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, but it skips the larger 11.6-inch touchscreen, so it makes the most sense only if you want the lowest starting price and can live with the simpler setup.
• XLE: This is the best-value trim because it adds the larger touchscreen, navigation, wireless charging, heated front seats, and keyless entry, making it the smartest balance of features and price.
• Limited: This is the most fully equipped version, and it adds blind-spot monitoring on top of the richer feature set, so it suits you if you want the most convenience and safety equipment.

Blind-spot monitoring is included only on the Limited.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Prius Prime?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop, but the best listings may move quickly.

• Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 276 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 3.06% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 66.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $20,511, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime's resale value?

The current average of $22,427 sits slightly above last year's $21,761.

That upward move suggests the market still values this model year’s efficiency and reputation. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, you should have a decent chance of holding onto value better than a less efficient or less desirable commuter car.

The price range also shows there is still a meaningful spread between the low and high end, so condition and equipment will matter when you eventually sell. Strong fuel economy and broad shopper appeal should help keep demand steady.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime safe?

The Prius Prime itself has not been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but the closely related Prius earns five-star ratings from NHTSA overall, with four-star ratings for both driver and passenger in a head-on frontal crash and two-star ratings in the pole test. It also earned a 2019 Top Safety Pick from IIHS, though it received an Acceptable rating in the passenger-side small front overlap test.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, and Toyota Safety Connect with automatic crash notification. Blind-spot monitoring is included only on the Limited.

The main caveat is that the crash-test results cited come from the related Prius rather than the Prius Prime itself, so you should keep that in mind when comparing safety claims.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Prius Prime or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 3.06% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds a center rear seat and keeps the focus on maximum efficiency.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $22,800, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $22,427 average.
• It brings a stronger standard equipment list and more advanced safety features.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it keeps the same efficiency-first appeal at a slightly lower average price. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model with a richer standard feature set, the 2021 is the better secondary path.
