CarGurus Analysis: 2021 BMW 2 Series
overall

Summary
With 101 currently listed for sale near Virginia Beach, VA and an average price of $21,400, 42.6% of 2021 BMW 2 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 BMW 2 Series 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
83.2% of 2021 BMW 2 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW 2 Series is distinctive because it serves more than one kind of buyer. BMW’s lineup includes a coupe and convertible for driving enthusiasts, along with the 2021 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe for shoppers who simply want an affordable BMW. That makes it an unusual entry point into the brand, but also one that can be hard to pin down.
What stands out most is the car’s driving character and equipment. The 2021 BMW 2 Series is described as fun, with great handling and impressive technology. At the same time, it is hard to recommend because its seats are uncomfortable, the back seat is cramped, and it is poor value for money. That mix gives it appeal for buyers who prioritize style and driving enjoyment, while also making its compromises easy to notice.

Reviewed a 2021 BMW M240i xDrive Coupe AWD on May 28, 2025
Has almost every feature I need and want, the price I paid was a no brainer but in all honesty I was prepared to pay more. I wish it had blind spot notice and an Ariel camera view but it’s not deal breakers for me at all. I love the vehicle. I was set on an M240i but was open to years from 2018-2021 since that was my favorite body style. Ended up being able to get the newest and last year of the body style with great miles, and I’d have it no other way. Thank you Chantilly Auto!

Yes — the 2021 BMW 2 Series earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.
It stands out as an entry-level BMW that gives you multiple body styles, great handling, and impressive technology. That makes it appealing if you want a car that feels more engaging than a typical compact luxury sedan.
The trade-offs are clear: the seats are uncomfortable, the back seat is cramped, and value for money is weak. If you care most about driving enjoyment and premium branding, those compromises may be easier to accept.
The market shows 35.5% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 BMW 2 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2021 BMW 2 Series is positioned as an approachable entry into BMW ownership, and its easy-to-use technology helps reduce day-to-day frustration. The expert review also notes that BMW includes free scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, which can help soften early ownership costs.
Its performance hardware and premium features suggest a car built to deliver a polished driving experience, but the used-car risk is still tied to condition and maintenance history. For you, that means a clean service record matters as much as the badge.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 2 Series?
At 73.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Pay close attention to signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that the car has been driven hard or repaired poorly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 228i and M235i are the main model series, and the 228i can be had with xDrive while xDrive is standard on the M235i. Base versions are less richly equipped, so check whether the car has the packages and features you want.
- Powertrain: The 228i uses a 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder with an eight-speed sport automatic transmission, and xDrive is available for added traction. The car is quick enough to feel lively, and the performance tuning helps it stay composed.
- Safety package: The Active Driving Assistant suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, active blind-spot warning with intervention, and a speed limit information system. The Driving Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control and a parking-assistant feature.
- Infotainment: The available setup includes an 8.8-inch touchscreen, iDrive 7.0, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, navigation, connected services, and over-the-air software updates. The Premium Package adds a fully digital 10.25-inch display.
- Fuel efficiency: On the test loop, the car averaged 27.9 mpg, beating the EPA estimate of 27 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2021 BMW 2 Series trim should I buy?
The 2021 BMW 2 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 228i and M235i.
Here's the short version:
- 228i: This is the better-value choice if you want the core BMW experience without paying for the top model. It gives you the 228-hp turbo four-cylinder, strong handling, and the option to add xDrive, while still leaving room to choose the packages that matter most to you.
- M235i: This is the pick if you want the more performance-focused version and standard xDrive. It suits you best if all-weather traction and the stronger model series matter more than keeping the price down.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that the Driving Assistance Package is optional, while the Active Driving Assistant features are the broader standard safety set described in the review.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW 2 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.
- Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 578 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.97% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,531, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 BMW 2 Series's resale value?
The current average of $21,531 sits slightly below last year's $24,184.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to resell later, the current pricing trend means your future exit value will depend heavily on how well you preserve condition and mileage.
Because this model appeals to buyers who want a premium badge and engaging driving dynamics, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. Clean history and strong presentation will matter a lot when you eventually list it.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 BMW 2 Series safe?
The 2021 BMW 2 Series misses earning a Top Safety Pick due to headlights that rate either Poor or Marginal.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Active Driving Assistant suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, active blind-spot warning with intervention, and a speed limit information system. The Driving Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control and a parking-assistant feature that steers the car into a space while you operate the pedals and transmission.
The review also notes that lane-keeping assistance can be aggressive and abrupt, so you may notice it more than you expect in everyday driving. That makes it worth checking whether the car has the safety equipment you want and whether you’re comfortable with how it behaves.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW 2 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.97% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It offers an affordable BMW entry point with strong handling and impressive technology.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $22,675, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $21,531 average.
- It offers approachable luxury with standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $25,848, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,531 average.
- It brings a redesign with more power and a refreshed look.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and driving appeal, the 2021 is the smart starting point. If you’re more price-sensitive and can find a clean, well-kept example, this year makes more sense than moving up to the pricier 2022.
