Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Mazda CX-9 4.54 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Mazda CX-9 stands out as a midsize SUV that blends style, performance, technology, and safety in a premium-feeling package. Mazda’s focus on a refined driving experience gives it a more upscale character than many shoppers expect in this segment, and the 2021 model year is described as better than ever. Its stylish design and premium interior materials are major draws, and the cabin is presented as spacious overall.
That appeal is tempered by a few clear drawbacks. The third row is cramped, and the technology is described as both outdated and unintuitive. Even so, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 remains compelling for buyers who value a smooth, comfortable drive and a luxurious interior more than maximum practicality. Owners’ feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for its handling, reliability, and comfort, while also noting that more power and cargo space would be welcome, especially when the third-row seats are in use.

We absolutely love the cx-9, we looked at the pathfinder, sorento, pilot and cx-9. We did not like the drive of the pathfinder, the lack of safety features & keyless start in the sorento (especially with how easy kia has been to break into) the pilot is great but to get all the features we want just out of budget. The cx-9 provides the luxury feel and drive, and allows you to have all of the safety features. We love it

German luxury like ride and interior without the German car repairs. Solid ride, feels great driving looks beautiful and fun to drive. Biggest downside is interior space.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-9 a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Mazda CX-9 earns a 4.54/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its smooth handling, luxurious interior, and comfortable driving experience. The review summary also points to reliability and a premium feel, which helps it stand out if you want something that feels more upscale than many midsize SUVs. In use-case terms, this is a strong fit if you value refinement, style, and a polished road feel more than maximum utility.
The trade-offs are clear: the third row is cramped, and the technology is described as outdated and unintuitive. The CX-9’s market position also reflects that balance, since it aims at shoppers who want a premium-feeling family SUV rather than the most practical one. Even so, 33.5% of listings are marked as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2021 Mazda CX-9 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.54/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels reliable, dependable, and easy to count on over time. That matters here because the CX-9’s appeal is tied to everyday comfort and a premium ownership experience, so consistency is part of the value proposition. The expert evaluation also emphasizes a compliant ride, controlled handling, and a six-speed automatic that behaves flawlessly, all of which support the impression of solid day-to-day dependability.
Mazda also frames the CX-9 as a carefully engineered SUV with smooth, controlled responses and a well-sorted chassis. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about living with its space and technology compromises over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda CX-9?
At 71.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and prioritize any signs of prior body damage, airbag deployment, or uneven panel gaps. A pre-purchase inspection is especially useful here because the CX-9’s appeal depends heavily on condition, and you want to confirm that the premium-feeling cabin and safety systems have been maintained properly. Pay close attention to the third row, cargo area, and infotainment usability, since those are the areas most likely to affect your day-to-day satisfaction.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Sport and Touring use 18-inch wheels, while Carbon Edition adds a custom look with Polymetal Gray paint, cranberry red leather upholstery, second-row captain’s chairs, and dark-finish 20-inch wheels. Grand Touring and Signature bring more standard features, with Signature adding a restyled grille, a fresh wheel design, patterned aluminum cabin accents, and quilted leather with contrast piping.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. Output varies by fuel type, and the engine delivers strong low-rpm torque with available Sport mode and manual shift control.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, rain-sensing wipers, and other driver-assist tech. Carbon Edition adds adaptive front lighting, a windshield wiper de-icer, a driver-attention monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and reverse automatic emergency braking, while Grand Touring adds a surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: The CX-9 uses a 10.25-inch static display with Mazda Connect, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, text messaging support, Pandora integration, and 9-1-1 automatic emergency notification. Mazda Connect services includes a free three-year trial, plus a separate three-month/2GB WiFi hotspot trial.
- Fuel efficiency: The CX-9 Signature is rated at 23 mpg combined by the EPA, and the review notes that real-world results can fall short of that figure.
Which 2021 Mazda CX-9 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-9 experience with the standard turbocharged engine, six-speed automatic, and the basic safety and infotainment setup. It makes sense if you want the CX-9’s style and driving feel at the lowest price.
- Touring: This trim keeps the same mechanical package but adds a step up in equipment over Sport, making it a better fit if you want a more complete daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- Carbon Edition: This is the best-value trim if you want the biggest visual and feature upgrade for the money. It adds the distinctive exterior and interior treatment, second-row captain’s chairs, and meaningful tech and safety upgrades, including the Bose audio system, wireless phone charger, and head-up display.
- Grand Touring: This is the right choice if you want more luxury and a surround-view camera system. It builds on the Carbon Edition’s safety and comfort gains with additional standard equipment.
- Signature: This is the most upscale version, with the richest materials and the most premium presentation. Choose it if you want the CX-9 to feel closest to a near-luxury SUV.
The Carbon Edition is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the most noticeable upgrades without pushing all the way to the top of the range. Safety-wise, the Carbon Edition also marks the next big step up, while Grand Touring adds the surround-view camera system.

If you find a listing below $22,259.01, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Mazda CX-9's resale value?
The current average of $22,355 sits slightly below last year's $24,547.
That price movement suggests the CX-9 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy well now, you may be starting from a more favorable price base than a buyer who paid closer to last year’s average. The model’s premium feel and strong demand among comfort-focused shoppers can also help support used-market interest later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.54/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Mazda CX-9 safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star frontal-impact results for the driver and front passenger.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, rain-sensing wipers, and other driver-assist features. Mazda also adds a driver monitoring system and automatic reverse braking for 2021, while Carbon Edition brings adaptive front lighting, a windshield wiper de-icer, a driver-attention monitor, and front and rear parking sensors. Grand Touring adds a surround-view camera system.
One caveat is that lane-centering assistance is unavailable, and the adaptive cruise system can struggle to maintain following distance smoothly at higher speeds. Even so, the CX-9’s overall safety package is a major strength, especially if you want a family SUV with a strong crash-test reputation.
Should I buy a 2021 Mazda CX-9 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.93% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.54/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 update brings a better infotainment system, new safety features, and a more upscale feel.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $24,385, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $22,355 average.
- It adds a more fully developed six-trim lineup and standard all-wheel drive.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2021 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and meaningful updates. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2022 is the cleaner alternative for buyers who want the next step up and don’t mind paying extra.
