Used 2021 Mazda CX-9 for Sale nearMilwaukee, WI

How much does the 2021 Mazda CX-9 cost?

Prices have softened 8.42% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 529 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-9 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Mazda CX-9 earns a 4.54/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its smooth handling, reliability, and luxurious interior, and they also highlight its comfortable driving experience. The main trade-offs are that it could use more power and more cargo space, especially when the third row is in use.

That lines up with the CX-9’s positioning as a premium-feeling midsize SUV that emphasizes style, comfort, and a polished driving experience over maximum utility. With 35.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding attractive pricing if you shop carefully.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-9 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.54/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a reliable, dependable SUV that many people feel good about keeping over time. Reviewers also describe it as trouble-free and something you can count on, especially if you value a refined driving experience and upscale cabin feel.

The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the CX-9 as a well-executed family SUV with strong driving dynamics and a smooth, controlled ride. Mazda also includes a free three-year trial period for connected services, which adds some ownership convenience early on.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic dependability and more about living with the CX-9’s known compromises in space and technology.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda CX-9?

At 70.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and pay close attention to any prior collision repairs, especially on higher-mileage examples. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing so you can check for signs of bodywork, uneven wear, or neglected maintenance. Focus your evaluation on condition, because the CX-9’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been kept.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Sport and Touring sit below the Carbon Edition, while Grand Touring and Signature add more standard features. The Carbon Edition stands out with Polymetal Gray paint, cranberry red leather upholstery, second-row captain’s chairs, and dark-finish 20-inch wheels, while the Signature adds a restyled grille, a fresh wheel design, patterned aluminum cabin accents, and quilted leather with contrast piping. The base trims are the ones most likely to feel lightest on upscale touches.
• Powertrain: Every 2021 CX-9 uses a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard on most trims, while the Signature includes all-wheel drive as standard. The engine makes 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet on regular fuel, or 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet on premium fuel, and the available torque gives it strong everyday pull.
• Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and rain-sensing wipers are standard. The Carbon Edition adds adaptive front lighting, a windshield wiper de-icer, a driver-attention monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and Smart City Brake Support Reverse. Grand Touring adds a surround-view camera system. Lane-centering assistance is unavailable.
• Infotainment: The CX-9 uses a 10.25-inch static display with Mazda Connect, and all versions include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, text messaging support, Pandora access, and 9-1-1 automatic emergency notification. Mazda Connect services are also standard, with a free three-year trial period and a separate three-month/2GB WiFi hotspot trial.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the CX-9 Signature should return 23 mpg combined, though the review notes real-world results were lower at 20.1 mpg on the standard route.

Which 2021 Mazda CX-9 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, Signature.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point if you want the CX-9’s core strengths at the lowest price. You still get the turbocharged engine, the standard safety suite, and the premium driving feel, but it is the trim most likely to leave you wanting more upscale equipment.
• Touring: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more comfort and convenience without pushing you into the highest price brackets. If you want the CX-9’s premium character without paying for the most luxurious trims, this is the one to focus on.
• Carbon Edition: This is the style-and-features sweet spot. It adds the distinctive look, second-row captain’s chairs, adaptive front lighting, a driver-attention monitor, parking sensors, reverse automatic emergency braking, satellite radio, a Bose audio system, a wireless phone charger, and a head-up display.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and the surround-view camera system. It builds on the Carbon Edition’s safety and convenience upgrades while moving the CX-9 closer to luxury-SUV territory.
• Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with the richest materials and the most distinctive cabin presentation. It also gets standard all-wheel drive, so it makes sense if you want the most premium CX-9 and don’t mind paying for it.

The Carbon Edition is the trim where the CX-9’s safety and luxury upgrades start to feel especially compelling, while Grand Touring and Signature add the most advanced equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mazda CX-9?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 529 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.42% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 70.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $22,023, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Mazda CX-9's resale value?

The current average of $22,023 sits slightly below last year's $24,049.

That softer pricing suggests the CX-9 has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number. If you purchase near the current average or below, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell.

The model’s premium feel and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand on the used market. Well-kept examples with clean history and desirable equipment should be easier to move than neglected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.54/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-9 safe?

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA. It earns four-star ratings in frontal crash for the driver and front passenger, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard, along with adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and rain-sensing wipers. Mazda also includes a driver monitoring system and automatic reverse braking on the Carbon Edition, while Grand Touring adds a surround-view camera system.

One caveat is that lane-centering assistance is unavailable, so the CX-9’s driver-assistance tech is helpful but not fully comprehensive. The expert review also notes that the adaptive cruise control can struggle to maintain following distance smoothly at higher speeds.

Should I buy a 2021 Mazda CX-9 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.42% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.54/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 update brings a better infotainment system, new safety features, and a more polished overall package.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $23,538, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $22,023 average.
• It adds standard all-wheel drive and is offered in six trim levels.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2021 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and meaningful updates. If you’re willing to spend more for standard AWD and a slightly newer model year, the 2022 is the cleaner alternative for shoppers who prioritize that extra capability.
