Is the 2021 Subaru Ascent a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 5/5 user-rated SUV with an 8.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

The 2021 Ascent fits well if you want a three-row SUV with standard all-wheel drive, a spacious cabin, and a long list of standard features. It also brings plenty of cargo space and an unusually large number of cupholders, which makes it especially practical for family duty.

The main trade-off is its uninspired styling, and the ride is more about comfort than excitement. It’s a strong match if you value utility and Subaru’s familiar strengths over flash.

37.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there’s room to shop carefully.

Is the 2021 Subaru Ascent reliable?

The 2021 Ascent is presented as a safety- and reliability-minded family SUV, with standard all-wheel drive and a focus on confident travel in varied conditions. Its expert evaluation also emphasizes that it’s built for practical, everyday use rather than excitement.

The performance notes point to a turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer four-cylinder engine that “gets the job done” in most driving scenarios, with comfort-focused ride tuning and enough capability for snow and light off-roading. The cost-effectiveness notes also highlight standard equipment and a value-oriented setup for shoppers who need space without overspending.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is more about finding a well-kept example than worrying about the model’s core mission.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Subaru Ascent?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage doesn’t replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear items, interior condition, and how well the vehicle’s family-use features have held up. Since this is a three-row SUV, pay close attention to seat condition, cargo-area wear, and whether the cabin electronics work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Standard trim comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, tri-zone climate control, four USB ports, remote keyless entry, and a solid set of driver-assistance features. The Premium trim adds an 8-inch touchscreen, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, stain-resistant upholstery, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, and second-row climate controls. The Limited adds push-button start, more power-adjustment for the front seats, third-row USB ports, heated second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Touring adds second-row captain’s chairs, ventilated front seats, ambient cabin lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium stereo. The Premium is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds several everyday comfort upgrades without jumping to the top of the range.

• Powertrain: Every trim uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer four-cylinder engine with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. It’s tuned for everyday usefulness, with enough strength for highway merging and passing, plus comfort-oriented ride behavior. It also has 8.7 inches of ground clearance, standard X-Mode, and a towing rating of up to 5,000 pounds.

• Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight suite includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and a feature that alerts you when traffic ahead starts moving again. For 2021, automatic high beams and headlights that bend with steering angle are standard. Optional safety features include reverse automatic emergency braking, rain-sensing windshield wipers, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

• Infotainment: The Ascent offers a 6.5-inch touchscreen on the Standard trim and an 8-inch unit on the Premium and above. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and Subaru’s StarLink system uses logical menus with large icons, plus hard buttons and dials. Available upgrades include third-row USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, and the 14-speaker Harman Kardon stereo.

• Fuel efficiency: EPA-estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined on the Standard and Premium trims. The Limited and Touring return 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.

Which 2021 Subaru Ascent trim should I buy?

The 2021 Subaru Ascent is offered in 4 trim levels: Standard, Premium, Limited, and Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Standard: This is the entry point, but it still gives you standard all-wheel drive, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, tri-zone climate control, four USB ports, remote keyless entry, and a strong set of driver-assistance features. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Ascent lineup and don’t need extra comfort features.

• Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen, heated front seats, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, stain-resistant upholstery, and second-row climate controls. It’s the trim that most clearly balances price and everyday convenience.

• Limited: This trim adds push-button start, more power-adjustable front seats, third-row USB ports, heated second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel. Choose it if you want a more upscale family hauler and expect regular use from the third row.

• Touring: This is the most luxurious version, with second-row captain’s chairs, ventilated front seats, ambient cabin lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and the 14-speaker Harman Kardon stereo. It suits you best if you want the most comfort and convenience features the Ascent offers.

The Standard trim comes solidly equipped with a host of driver-assistance features, and the Premium adds several comfort upgrades that make it the sweet spot for many buyers.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Subaru Ascent?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 37.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,900 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.10% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 82.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,832, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Subaru Ascent's resale value?

The current average of $21,832 sits slightly below last year's $25,123.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more affordably now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice rather than broad market momentum alone.

Because the model still has strong family appeal and a practical feature set, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2021 Subaru Ascent or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 37.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.10% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds newly standard safety features while keeping the Ascent’s spacious, family-focused formula.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $19,894, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $21,832 average.
• It emphasizes space, standard all-wheel drive, and family-friendly practicality.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $25,445, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,832 average.
• It adds an Onyx Edition with blacked-out trim and water-resistant upholstery.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and family utility, the 2021 is the strongest all-around pick. If you’re focused on saving money, the 2020 is the better value play, while the 2022 makes sense if you want the newer trim addition and are willing to pay more.
