CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Tesla Model X
Summary
With 496 currently listed for sale and an average price of $38,260, 28.2% of 2021 Tesla Model Xs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Tesla Model X 4.67 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Tesla Model X stands out as a large, all-electric SUV that was designed to carry families without giving up Tesla’s performance and tech focus. It is based on the same platform as the Tesla Model S and shares about 30% of its content with that sedan, but it adds two- and three-row seating for up to seven passengers. Its most distinctive feature is the double-hinged Falcon Wing rear doors, which open upward instead of outward, giving the Model X a look and personality that few SUVs can match.
For 2021, the Model X received a major overhaul. The interior was redesigned and the entire powertrain was updated, while the exterior change was limited to a new front bumper. That year also brought the Model X Plaid, a tri-motor version aimed at even quicker acceleration and better efficiency. The cabin gained a landscape-format center screen, better materials, a revised center console, a yoke steering wheel, and a rear-seat entertainment screen, along with updated Autopilot hardware and a faster infotainment system. Standard equipment was generous, including all-wheel drive, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive suspension, a premium 17-speaker audio system, navigation, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth phone pairing, and automatic front doors.
The 2021 Model X also had some clear drawbacks. It did not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and the third row was cramped. The Falcon Wing doors can also be tricky in tight spaces. Even so, the Model X remained appealing for buyers who wanted a roomy electric SUV with strong range, advanced technology, and standout design.

My favorite car in the world, Ive owned two model x vehicles. Pros in order... Safest vehicle around, autopilot features, faster than almost any car in the world, range, the enormous windshield, cool doors, interior space.

Absolutely amazing! The tech, the power, the handling, the comfort is all amazing. If I had to list one thing to be improved upon, its that there is a little wind noise at the upper front left and right window posts at speed.

Features were awesome, if only it came with all the extra perks that Tesla offer that we are charge a fee for. The only thing the car is missing is a better rim package, the black rims.

Yes — the 2021 Tesla Model X earns a 4.67/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. It is a large, all-electric SUV built for families who want two- and three-row seating, standout design, and a heavy emphasis on performance and technology. For 2021, it also got a major overhaul with a redesigned interior, updated powertrain, improved infotainment, and updated Autopilot hardware, so you’re looking at a more modern version of the Model X formula. 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Tesla Model X reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The 2021 Model X’s overview points to a substantial update year, with a redesigned cabin, revised powertrain, and upgraded electronics, which can be encouraging if you want a newer-feeling used EV. At the same time, its complex doors, advanced tech, and premium equipment mean you should expect careful maintenance and a thorough pre-purchase check. For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by verifying condition, software functionality, and prior repair history before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Tesla Model X?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.4% — always verify the vehicle history report. You should prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the Falcon Wing doors, interior electronics, and overall fit and finish, since the Model X’s standout features are also the ones most worth scrutinizing. Focus on condition and functionality rather than just mileage, especially if you want the cabin tech and family-friendly packaging to feel as polished as the price suggests.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Tesla Model X?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 495 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 84.4% of listings are accident-free.
Should I buy a 2021 Tesla Model X or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2021 Model X is the better choice if you want the updated interior, revised powertrain, and newer tech package that came with the overhaul year. If your priority is stretching your budget, a nearby older year may be worth a look, but you’ll want to balance that against the 2021’s more modern cabin and stronger overall appeal for family EV buyers.
