About 2022 Ferrari SF90
Few brands command as much reverence in the automotive world as Ferrari does. Whether it’s from the company’s elder statesman status in Formula 1 racing or its cars’ ultra-exclusive price tags and scorching performance, almost everyone knows at least a little bit about Ferrari. Like other exotic automakers, Ferrari uses hybrid systems in some of its cars to improve performance. The SF90 Stradale is a great example of how that works, as the twin-turbo V8-powered car implements a plug-in hybrid powertrain to generate massive horsepower, while returning up to 51 MPGe (miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent). Unsurprisingly, the SF90 packs a little more heat than the Prius that held you up in the left lane during your commute this morning. The car comes with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 and three electric motors that combine for 986 system horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. The engine alone makes 769 horsepower, and the electric motors generate 217 additional ponies. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, and thanks to the electric motors, there’s all-wheel drive. With almost 1,000 horsepower on tap, the SF90 can run from 0-60 mph in an astonishing time in the low two-second range. The car’s hybrid powertrain is focused more on face-melting performance than it is on efficiency, but there are green-friendly drive modes that take advantage of the electrified components. The car can be driven in EV-only mode, normal hybrid mode, a performance/sport mode, or a Qualify mode that opens the tap completely for top performance. The SF90’s interior is fairly tame as far as Ferrari interiors go, but it features an elegant design with smooth lines and interesting shapes. There are no wild colors or giant screens to distract from the driving experience, but Ferrari did add yellow accents on the steering wheel, seatbelts, and elsewhere. Cargo space is limited, which isn’t surprising, but there’s ample room in both front seats for even taller adults. Though it’s not a focus of the car, Ferrari offers a decent amount of tech in the SF90. Bluetooth, navigation, voice controls, a six-speaker stereo, and Apple CarPlay are all standard. Unfortunately for Google-powered smartphone users, Android Auto is not offered. A rearview camera and parking sensors are standard, but popular safety options like lane-departure alerts and blind-spot monitoring are not offered. As is usually the case with Ferrari, buyers have the ability to drastically increase their purchase price with options. Performance components like a titanium sport exhaust system, wheels, and brakes are available, along with tech upgrades and interior finishes. Price likely isn’t of huge importance to many SF90 buyers, however, as the Coupe’s starting price of more than $511,000 isn’t a number for the faint of heart. The open-top Spider is even pricier than that, and a $50,000 Assetto Fiorano package is available to lighten the car and improve performance.
