There are 1,130 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.

You’re looking at a full-size luxury sedan that emphasizes a polished cabin, advanced tech, and a serene driving experience. The overview and expert notes point to a flagship sedan with premium materials, strong ride quality, and a technical powertrain setup that fits its executive mission.

The main trade-offs are clear: the design may not appeal to everyone, and the price is high. The expert notes also flag the cost as a drawback, even though the car delivers a lot of luxury and capability for buyers who want a top-tier sedan.

Buy now if: you want a flagship luxury sedan that prioritizes comfort, technology, and a premium feel over value shopping.

The market looks reasonably open, with 34.5% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?

The S-Class is built around Mercedes-Benz’s flagship formula: advanced engineering, a refined ride, and a strong emphasis on comfort and technology. The expert notes also describe the powertrain as seamless and responsive, which supports the impression of a well-sorted luxury sedan rather than a finicky one.

The performance content highlights the EQ Boost system as a seamless source of extra power and torque, which suggests a sophisticated setup rather than a strained one. The cost-effectiveness notes also say buyers who choose the sedan 4Matic will find little to complain about or regret.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic competence and more about the complexity and cost that can come with a highly equipped flagship luxury car.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on electronics, suspension behavior, and any signs of expensive wear on a high-end luxury sedan. Pay close attention to overall condition, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well the cabin, tech, and ride quality have been preserved.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S500 and S580 both bring a high-end experience, but the base Luxury Line is the entry point, while AMG Line and Executive Line add more equipment and presence. The cabin’s standout features include the 12.8-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, and premium materials throughout.
• Powertrain: The S500 uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six mild-hybrid setup, while the S580 uses a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. Both use EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and standard 4Matic AWD, with the S500 rated at up to 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg combined and the S580 at 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway/19 mpg combined.
• Safety package: Standard driver assistance includes active distance assist Distronic, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist with active emergency stop assist and active lane-change assistant, active brake assist with cross-traffic and turn-off functions, active speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, active blind-spot assist with exit warning, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication. Available rear-passenger airbags and rear-seat belt bag add executive-focused protection.
• Infotainment: The S-Class uses a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen with the latest MBUX system, plus a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. It also includes standard augmented video for navigation, with an available augmented reality head-up display and standard Burmester 3D Surround sound.
• Fuel efficiency: The S500 is rated at up to 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.

Which 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 5 trim levels: S500 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line, S500 4Matic Sedan AMG Line, S580 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line, S580 4Matic Sedan AMG Line, and S580 4Matic Sedan Executive Line.

Here's the short version:

• S500 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line: This is the entry point and the most accessible way into the S-Class experience, pairing the six-cylinder mild-hybrid setup with standard all-wheel drive and the flagship cabin tech. It makes the most sense if you want the core S-Class formula without stretching for extra appearance or executive upgrades.
• S500 4Matic Sedan AMG Line: This adds a sportier visual presentation and is the version to consider if you want a more aggressive look while staying with the S500 powertrain. It suits you if style matters as much as the standard luxury content.
• S580 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line: This is the best-value upgrade if you want the V8’s extra performance and still prefer a restrained luxury presentation. It gives you the strongest blend of power and traditional flagship comfort.
• S580 4Matic Sedan AMG Line: Choose this if you want the V8 plus a more assertive appearance package. It’s for buyers who want the stronger engine and a more expressive look.
• S580 4Matic Sedan Executive Line: This is the top-end choice for buyers who want the most upscale, chauffeur-friendly version of the lineup. It’s the one to target if rear-seat comfort and prestige matter most.

The safety package is extensive across the lineup, with executive-level rear-seat protection available on higher-spec versions.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,130 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.47% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 86.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $63,170, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?

The current average of $63,211 sits slightly below last year's $70,601.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may pressure future resale if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the model’s value is still supported by its flagship status, but pricing momentum has softened.

If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned than the average seller when it’s time to move on. High-end luxury sedans can hold demand when they remain desirable, well maintained, and properly equipped.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Mercedes-Benz loads the S-Class with a broad suite of standard and available driver assistance features, including active distance assist Distronic, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist with active emergency stop assist and active lane-change assistant, active brake assist with cross-traffic and turn-off functions, active speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, active blind-spot assist with exit warning, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication.

Magic Vision Control is standard, and the car also offers executive-focused rear-seat safety features such as available rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag. The main caveat is that some of the most advanced protection and comfort features are reserved for higher-spec or available configurations.

Should I buy a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.47% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines flagship comfort, advanced tech, and a polished ride in a freshly redesigned generation.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $58,597, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $63,211 average.
• It launched the redesigned S-Class with new powertrains and advanced tech.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $78,507, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $63,211 average.
• It adds a new plug-in hybrid powertrain with electric driving capability.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, freshness, and flagship appeal, the 2022 is the sweet spot. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value play. If you want the newer powertrain and can justify the higher price, the 2023 is the upgrade path.
