How much does the 2022 Subaru Forester cost?

Prices have softened 8.27% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 4,037 listings available, which gives you a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Subaru Forester earns a 4.62/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, safety features, spacious interior, AWD capabilities, and useful technology. The main trade-offs are its outdated styling, limited storage space, and desire for more powerful performance.

That fits the Forester’s role as a practical compact crossover for buyers who want usefulness, capability, and everyday ease more than flash or speed. Good and great deals account for 36.5% of listings, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester reliable?

Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for the Forester’s durability and confidence-inspiring everyday use. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that it is built for practical, long-term utility and is known for holding its value over time.

Subaru’s maintenance and ownership costs are framed as reasonable for a capable compact crossover, though the lack of a turbocharged engine or electrified option may matter if you plan to keep it for many years. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about core dependability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not abused.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension condition, tire wear, interior condition, and any signs of off-road use if you are considering a Wilderness model. It also makes sense to confirm that the safety and infotainment features work as expected, since those are major parts of the Forester’s appeal.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Forester comes in base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring trim levels. The base model starts with standard all-wheel drive, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, and Starlink connected services, while higher trims add features such as a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, an 8-inch screen, navigation, a Harman Kardon premium sound system, and a power rear liftgate. The Wilderness stands out with extra clearance, more rugged body cladding, and off-road-focused hardware, while Touring adds DriverFocus.
• Powertrain: The Forester uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. Subaru also gives the Wilderness a CVT design that improves initial torque supply and raises towing capacity to 3,000 pounds, while the EPA says that trim should return 26 mpg in combined driving.
• Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. The Forester also offers a rear-seat reminder, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and connected emergency services, while Touring adds DriverFocus.
• Infotainment: Base models get a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, and Starlink connected services. Wilderness, Limited, and Touring use an 8-inch screen, and that setup can add navigation and a Harman Kardon premium sound system; Premium trim also adds access to a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The Wilderness should get 26 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 25.9 mpg.

Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 6 trim levels: base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the value-focused starting point if you want standard all-wheel drive, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the Forester’s core safety and utility strengths without paying for extras.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades, including a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, while staying below the more expensive feature-heavy trims.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a step up in equipment and a more distinctive personality without jumping all the way to the higher-priced luxury-oriented trims.
• Wilderness: Pick this if you want the most adventurous version, with extra ground clearance, rugged body protection, all-terrain tires, a skid plate, and off-road-friendly hardware.
• Limited: This is the right middle ground if you want the larger 8-inch screen plus navigation and a Harman Kardon audio system.
• Touring: Buy this if you want the most upscale Forester, including DriverFocus and the fullest feature set.

Touring trim adds DriverFocus, while the Wilderness may require separate safety re-testing because of its modified height.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.

• Deal availability: 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 4,037 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.27% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 86.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $24,434, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $24,434 sits slightly below last year's $26,638.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the current trend means you should expect a more competitive resale environment than last year’s. Even so, the Forester’s reputation for durability and practical ownership keeps it positioned as a model with steady demand.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2022 Subaru Forester earns five-star ratings from NHTSA in all evaluations except rollover resistance, where it gets a four-star assessment.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Subaru’s EyeSight 4.0 suite is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. The Forester also offers rear-seat reminder, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and connected emergency assistance through Starlink.

One caveat is that the Wilderness may require re-testing because of its modified height, and the expert review also notes that the safety system warning lights briefly illuminated during testing.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.27% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Subaru added fresh design details, upgraded EyeSight technology, and the Wilderness trim for extra off-road capability.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,994, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,434 average.
• It is mostly unchanged and emphasizes standard AWD, value, and core practicality.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $27,019, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,434 average.
• It adds next-generation EyeSight safety features and an improved standard infotainment system.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and capability, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the smarter value play, while the 2023 makes sense if you want the newer infotainment and safety refinements and are willing to pay more.
