CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota Corolla
overall

Summary
With 161 currently listed for sale near Rochester, NY and an average price of $21,189, 53.4% of 2022 Toyota Corollas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Corolla 4.17 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
100.0% of 2022 Corolla models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Corolla remains a solid choice in the compact-car class because it gives buyers a lot of flexibility in a familiar, sensible package. Toyota offers it in sedan and hatchback body styles, with manual and automatic transmissions and multiple powertrain options, including a hybrid. For 2022, the only significant change is the addition of two new colors, Ruby Flare and Windchill Pearl.
That breadth of choice is a major part of the Corolla’s appeal, especially for shoppers who want a dependable, practical car without having to move up to something larger. It also comes with the expected array of trim levels, and the Corolla sedan is available in L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE grades, plus Apex Edition and Nightshade Edition versions of SE and XSE. At the same time, the Corolla is not trying to be the most exciting compact car on the road: the available technology is described as outdated, the design may be polarizing, and performance can feel sluggish.

Overall im happy with my purchase, it was a good car at a good price, there were a minor dent in the front lip that was conviently placed to be covered by the bottom of the ad, which is misleading but not a deal breaker.

Dependable and attractive design, with practical features so there isnt a bunch of added flash that you end up paying for. Wish there were more of these cars around so the demand would go down. These are higher priced due to demand for sure.

Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla a good car?
Generally — you’re looking at a 4.17/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its dependable design, practicality, and value for money, and many also appreciate the feature set and overall usefulness. The trade-offs are familiar: the technology can feel outdated, the design may be polarizing, and performance can feel sluggish.
That fits the Corolla’s role as a sensible compact car with sedan and hatchback body styles, manual and automatic transmissions, and multiple powertrain choices. If you want a familiar, practical daily driver rather than something flashy, the market signals suggest it still makes sense. 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback emphasizes dependable design, practicality, and a car that feels well worth the investment. The expert notes also frame it as a reliable and sensible compact car, with a reputation for affordability, reliability, and efficiency. Toyota’s three-year, 36,000-mile basic warranty and five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty add some reassurance for used buyers.
For long-term ownership, the main risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car’s age, equipment level, and maintenance history match your expectations.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?
At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the equipment level matches what you want, since the Corolla’s trim spread changes the experience quite a bit. If you’re comparing multiple listings, pay close attention to signs of prior damage, tire wear, and interior condition.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE and XSE models add more aggressive exterior styling, while Nightshade Editions bring blacked-out trim and Apex Editions add a subtle body kit with bronze accents and model-specific 18-inch wheels. Base trims are more restrained in appearance, and the interior is simpler, with cloth upholstery standard and SofTex leatherette available on some trim levels.
- Powertrain: The L, LE, and XLE use a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque, while the SE and XSE use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 169 hp and 151 lb-ft. A CVT is standard with the smaller engine, and the 2.0-liter can also be paired with a six-speed manual on SE and SE Apex Edition models.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, but not standard on all trim levels.
- Infotainment: The L gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while all other trim levels get an 8-inch screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, WiFi connectivity, Amazon Alexa integration, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system are standard, and a nine-speaker JBL system is available on XSE, XLE, and CVT-equipped SE models.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine with CVT is rated at up to 34 mpg combined, and the manual-transmission SE Apex Edition is rated at 31 mpg combined. The Corolla Hybrid is rated at 52 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Corolla is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Corolla nameplate. You get the smaller engine and the standard safety and connectivity features, but the 7-inch touchscreen and simpler presentation make it the most basic choice.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the larger 8-inch touchscreen while keeping the Corolla’s practical, easygoing character. If you want a balanced daily driver without moving too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to focus on.
- XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale-feeling Corolla with the stronger feature set implied by the higher trim position. It also qualifies for the available JBL audio system.
- SE: This is the trim to consider if you want the more aggressive styling and the 2.0-liter engine. It also opens the door to the six-speed manual, which makes the Corolla more engaging.
- XSE: This is the most feature-rich gas trim and also qualifies for the available JBL audio system. It makes the most sense if you want the strongest mix of equipment and appearance upgrades.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, but it isn’t standard on all trim levels.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,315 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.65% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,152, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Corolla's resale value?
The current average of $18,559 sits slightly below last year's $19,465.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and trim desirability than on broad market momentum. Well-kept examples with stronger equipment and clean history should hold up better than rougher, higher-mileage cars.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla safe?
The 2022 Toyota Corolla earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and four-star ratings in rollover crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 brings forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available, but it isn’t standard on all trim levels.
The main caveat is that headlight performance varies by trim level, with IIHS headlight ratings ranging from Acceptable to Marginal.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.65% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the Corolla’s broad mix of body styles, transmissions, and powertrain choices.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,033, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $18,559 average.
- It blends affordability, reliability, and efficiency with a more engaging SE and XSE personality.
The bottom line: If you want the broader 2022 market selection and a still-reasonable price, the 2022 is the better all-around target. If your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable giving up some of the current-year inventory, the 2021 is the value play.
