Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In stands out first for its redesign. Kia gave the Niro dramatic new styling and a revamped interior for the 2023 model year, and the plug-in hybrid version also gets more power and electric range than the previous-generation Niro PHEV. It is part of a lineup that keeps hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric powertrains, making the Niro unusual in the U.S. market because it is the only vehicle sold there with those three powertrain options.
That appeal is balanced by a few practical drawbacks. The 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In is described as spacious and stylish, with a great warranty, but it is also noted for sluggish performance, not much cargo space, and the lack of all-wheel drive. Owner feedback reinforces the appeal of its tech features, comfortable ride, and efficiency, while also echoing concerns about cargo storage.
This analysis is based on CarGurus' proprietary market data from September 14, 2026, CarGurus experts' opinions, and generative AI.

Very comfortable, quiet, energy-efficient car that will save money by running mostly on electricity rather than gas.

This car is amazing, tech is easy to use, driving is really nice. Great turning radius. Haven’t really done lots of highway yet. I bought the EX model ( basic) because that’s all that was available, aside from missing a few cosmetic upgrades and sunroof, this car has all the engine and tech of more expensive models AND the tire size cost half of the SV model which for those of us who need snow tires is a nice break!! A quality vehicle, tighter drive and specs than Toyota and Ford. The ev experience is wonderful, combustion engine remains in the background until needed . Some other PHEV brands seem to run the combustion engine too easily. Too bad about the fed tax credit, certainly would help sell more!!

I just got this car a few days ago and I love it! The smart driving assist is comparable to that of Tesla. The auto hold feature is so smart as well. Great purchase!

Is the 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In a good car?
Yes — you rate it 5/5, and CarGurus experts give it 7.17/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the tech features, comfortable ride, and interior space, and many also call out the vehicle’s efficiency and strong electric-mode performance. The redesign gives it distinctive styling and a revamped cabin, which helps it feel more modern and more appealing than the previous-generation model.
The trade-offs are clear: expert testing points to sluggish performance and limited cargo space, and the lack of all-wheel drive may matter if you want more traction or versatility. For you, that makes the Niro PHEV most compelling if you value style, efficiency, and a well-equipped cabin over quick acceleration or maximum utility.
With 33.0% of listings priced as good or great deals, there’s still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a reliable, dependable ownership experience, with many drivers describing the Niro PHEV as a vehicle they can count on over the long term. The expert review also emphasizes its well-executed packaging and strong warranty coverage, which supports the case for predictable ownership.
Kia’s 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty and five-year, 60,000-mile limited warranty add another layer of reassurance for used buyers. For you, the main long-term ownership risk is less about durability and more about whether the car’s modest cargo space and performance fit your needs over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing examples with different mileage, wheel sizes, or option content. Focus on overall condition, cabin wear, and whether the car’s charging and infotainment features work as expected, since those are central to the ownership experience.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The EX and SX Touring are the two trims, and the SX Touring adds more equipment than the EX. The base trim already includes the redesigned cabin, but you should pay attention to feature gaps if you want the more upscale feel and added content of the higher trim.
- Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup pairs a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a more powerful electric motor and an 11.1-kilowatt-hour battery pack. It makes 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, and the car is front-wheel drive only.
- Safety package: Standard driver-assist features include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a driver attention monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit warning, rear occupant alert, and blind-spot collision avoidance. Standard adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and navigation-based curve prediction is also included, while Highway Driving Assist II is optional.
- Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Digital Key 2.0 is also available, though compatibility is limited to certain Apple and Samsung devices.
- Fuel efficiency: Kia expects an all-electric range of 33 miles with the standard 16-inch wheels.
Which 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In trim should I buy?
The 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In is offered in 2 trim levels: EX and SX Touring.
Here's the short version:
- EX: This is the trim to start with if you want the lowest entry price and the core plug-in hybrid experience. It gives you the redesigned Niro’s styling, the standard tech suite, and the full safety package, so it should make sense for you if value matters most.
- SX Touring: This is the better pick if you want the most content and are willing to pay more for it. It builds on the EX with additional equipment and is the trim to consider if you want the most upscale version of the Niro PHEV.
The safety package includes standard adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and navigation-based curve prediction, while Highway Driving Assist II is optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In?
This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 94 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 91.5% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In safe?
It earns standard driver-assist coverage that includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a driver attention monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit warning, rear occupant alert, and blind-spot collision avoidance.
It earns 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Niro PHEV also comes with standard adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and navigation-based curve prediction, which is a notable advantage over some mainstream rivals. Highway Driving Assist II, which adds automated lane centering, is optional.
Should I buy a 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 model year brings a redesign, more power, and more electric range than the previous-generation Niro PHEV.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned Niro PHEV with stronger appeal, better electric range, and a modern cabin, the 2023 is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, it makes sense to compare listings carefully and focus on the best-equipped example you can find within your budget.
