Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia stands out because a redesign turns it into a technologically advanced full-size SUV while giving it interior space more like a midsize SUV. It is also described as a benefactor of a long-overdue redesign and as improved in every way except for the full-size SUV part of the equation. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a modernized large SUV with a more compact-feeling cabin layout.
One of the Sequoia’s defining traits is that it is about the same size as the outgoing model on the outside, yet it shrinks on the inside to make room underneath the cabin for a standard hybrid powertrain. The result is a vehicle with a powerful engine, easy-to-use technology, and standard advanced safety features. At the same time, the tradeoff is clear: the third-row seat is best reserved for kids, cargo space is not much, and ride quality is poor.
For shoppers, that means the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is distinctive less for maximum space than for how it reworks the full-size SUV formula. It offers the presence and capability buyers expect from the segment, but its packaging makes it feel more like a midsize crossover inside, which will be a strength for some and a limitation for others.

I compared the Capstone Sequoia to the GMC Yukon Denali. I think I could be happy with either one, but I will choose the Toyota because I like that the chassis comes from the Tundra truck so it is a proven and stiff frame. I also like the power outlets for 120 Vac & 12 Vdc.

The 2023 Toyota Sequioa is an SUV worth owning. Its huge, its luxurious and strong. However, I have two issues with the SUV... 1. The SUV is highly unaffordable. The price is more than $100,000 for some of the models and even the said cheaper ones are nowhere within reach at the dealerships. 2. Also, prior to its production, the 2023 Sequioa was advertised as having CAPTAIN chairs for the most part. I was disappointed to know that the ones with CAPTAIN chairs cost way more than the ones without it.

Got a chance to ride in a limited yesterday. I have owned Sequoias since 2007, we buy them for the room, quietness and solidness. The 2023 Limited that I drove was surprisingly a little bit sloppy on the ride. It has the punch of a turbo which was fun. The high end interior felt a little cheap, 3rd row space has evaporated and you now have to decide to take people or luggage, no longer both. Beautiful vehicle which it was better.

I drive a 2016 Sequoia,. I love the way it works for our large family! When I saw the new looks I was excited! I finally got to test drive one last week and was really disappointed. It no longer has the spacious interior that works for a large family. I’d say anyone. Over 5”6 in height will start to be too big for the back seats. My kids hated it in the back and begged me not to buy it. I wish they could have updated the look - and kept the functionality that families have loved for decades. The positives are that It handles well, is better on gas, is really great to look at and has great features. But the new ones no longer have space in the back for taller kids and all your stuff.

How much does the 2023 Toyota Sequoia cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $61,757 |
| Year-Round Low | $61,782.58 |
| Year-Round High | $66,797.67 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $66,809 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.56% |
Prices have softened 7.56% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 844 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $61,782.58, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia a good car?
It’s a mixed but appealing choice if you want a modernized full-size SUV with strong capability and easy-to-use tech. The user rating is 3.75/5, and the expert rating is 6.67/10.
The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
The Sequoia’s redesign gives you a more technologically advanced cabin and a standard hybrid powertrain, while the tradeoff is that it feels more like a midsize SUV inside than a traditional full-size hauler. The expert notes also point to powerful performance and straightforward technology, but the ride quality is poor, the third row is cramped, and cargo space is limited.
That makes it a better fit if you care more about towing, modern features, and a compact-feeling cabin layout than maximum passenger and cargo room.
With 32.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market flexibility to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia reliable?
The 2023 Sequoia is built around a redesigned, standard hybrid setup that aims to blend strong output with better efficiency than the old V8 model. The expert notes describe it as powerful and improved in every way except for interior packaging, which matters because the hybrid hardware takes up space that would otherwise go to passengers and cargo.
The powertrain is described as robust, with strong towing and payload capability, and the hybrid system is presented as a meaningful step forward in efficiency. The cost-effectiveness notes also frame the truck-based design as a good fit if you need towing and off-road ability rather than maximum family-hauling space.
For long-term ownership, the main risk is that the same packaging compromises that define the model can make it less satisfying if your needs lean toward everyday comfort and cargo flexibility.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Sequoia?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one that’s been used for towing. Focus on overall condition, because this SUV’s value depends heavily on whether the cabin, suspension, and drivetrain have been treated like the capable family hauler it is.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SR5 starts with an 8-inch touchscreen, while other versions get a larger 14-inch display; the upscale Capstone adds a more luxurious interior presentation, and the TRD Pro is the trim to consider if you want the most off-road-oriented setup.
- Powertrain: You get a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 hybrid with a 10-speed automatic, a 36-kilowatt electric motor/generator, and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack; it delivers strong horsepower, torque, towing, and payload numbers.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and road sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safety Connect, and front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking are also standard.
- Infotainment: The base SR5 gets an 8-inch touchscreen, while other versions get a 14-inch screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the system supports connected services and an Intelligent Assistant.
- Fuel efficiency: The Sequoia is EPA-rated at 20 mpg with 4WD and 22 mpg with RWD.
Which 2023 Toyota Sequoia trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is offered in 5 trim levels: SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, Capstone.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, but it is not stripped down in the usual sense. You still get the standard hybrid powertrain and the full safety suite, so it makes sense if you want the Sequoia’s core capability without paying for luxury extras.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more equipment without pushing you into the highest price brackets. It’s the smart middle ground if you want a more complete daily driver.
- Platinum: This trim is a good step up if you want more premium features and the larger infotainment setup without going all the way to the top.
- TRD Pro: Choose this if you want the most off-road-focused version. It’s the trim to target if rough-road capability matters more than luxury touches.
- Capstone: This is the most upscale choice, with the richest interior presentation and the biggest tech presence. Buy it if you want the most premium Sequoia experience and are willing to pay for it.
Every trim includes the standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 driver-assistance package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Sequoia?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a fire sale.

- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.56% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 92.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $61,782.58, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia's resale value?
The current average of $61,757 sits slightly below last year's $66,809.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled enough to give you more negotiating room than a year ago. If you buy well now, you may be starting from a more favorable entry point than recent shoppers did.
For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should hold up better than higher-mileage trucks with visible wear or limited features.
Is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia safe?
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Every driver-assistance feature available for the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is standard equipment, and the package is bundled into Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. That suite includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and road sign recognition.
You also get blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safety Connect emergency assistance and automatic collision notification, plus front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking. The expert notes say the system is impressive overall, with highway-driving aids that work well and only minor annoyance from the lane-departure warning chime.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Sequoia or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.56% compared with last year.
- It brings a redesigned cabin, standard hybrid power, and strong expert safety marks.
Consider the 2022 if:
- It offers a more traditional, truck-based full-size SUV feel with more cargo space.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $66,795, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $61,757 average.
- It adds the same hybrid formula with broadly well-received updates and premium equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the newest-feeling Sequoia with strong safety and modern tech, the 2023 is the better primary pick. If your priority is stretching your budget, the 2022 may suit you better; if you want the newer model-year update and can pay more, the 2024 is the cleaner upgrade path.
