CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan
overall

Summary
With 6,210 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,678, 35.6% of 2023 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
88.9% of 2023 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out in the compact crossover class because it feels larger inside than many of its rivals and is one of only two vehicles in its segment to offer a third-row seat. It also brings a more upscale appearance than many primary competitors, which helps it feel a little more polished than its size and price might suggest. Volkswagen’s most popular model is the Tiguan, and the overall impression is that it rewards spending time behind the wheel.
It is also appealing for the way it drives. The Tiguan is described as enjoyable to drive, with great handling and a stylish design adding to its appeal. Cargo space is another strength, making it practical for buyers who want everyday usefulness along with a more refined look.
That said, the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan is not without drawbacks. Its performance is fairly pedestrian, and its technology can be unintuitive. The poor ergonomic design may also frustrate some shoppers, so while it has clear strengths in space, style, and road manners, it is best suited to buyers who can live with those compromises.

The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan proves to be a versatile and well-rounded crossover that offers a comfortable ride, ample space, and a range of modern features. During my recent test drive, the Tiguan demonstrated its ability to cater to both daily commuting and family adventures, making it a compelling choice in the compact SUV segment. As I approached the Tiguan, its sleek and modern design immediately caught my eye. The confident stance, stylish LED lighting, and chrome accents give it a premium feel. The Tiguan strikes a harmonious balance between sportiness and sophistication, making it an attractive option for those seeking an elegant yet adventurous presence on the road.

I love all the cars features. Great value, rides great. The only thing missing is an automatic lift rear trunk, although that is not available on this year and not a dealership issue, however it’s not that big of a deal. I love the feel of the seating and sleekness of the German design.

How much does the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,669 |
| Year-Round Low | $22,525 |
| Year-Round High | $24,348 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,344 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.88% |
Prices have softened 6.88% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 6,196 listings available, which suggests solid inventory availability.
Is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
The Tiguan stands out because it feels larger inside than many rivals, offers a third-row seat, and brings a more upscale appearance than many primary competitors. It is also described as enjoyable to drive, with great handling and plenty of cargo space adding to its everyday usefulness.
The trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, and the technology can be unintuitive. That makes it a better fit if you value space, style, and road manners more than quick acceleration or a simple interface.
36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Tiguan’s overall appeal comes from its roomy cabin, practical utility, and upscale feel, and the expert review also points to solid construction. Its performance is described as adequate rather than exciting, but the powertrain is still usable for everyday driving.
Volkswagen also includes two years of scheduled maintenance, roadside assistance, and a four-year/50,000-mile warranty, which helps reduce early ownership friction. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about living with its quirks, especially the touch-heavy controls and less intuitive tech.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a thorough inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on overall condition, interior controls, and how well the technology works in daily use, since those are the areas most likely to affect your ownership experience.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The trim lineup includes S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line. The base trim has a smaller touchscreen, and trim choice also affects wheel size, upholstery, and how much styling and equipment you get.
- Powertrain: The Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4Motion all-wheel drive is available.
- Safety package: Front Assist and Side Assist are standard, and Front Assist includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking. Side Assist adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. IQ.Drive is optional on base models and standard on other models, adding adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, active blind-spot monitoring, Lane Assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist.
- Infotainment: The base S trim has a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while other trims use an 8-inch screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, Car-Net connected services, and a Fender premium sound system are included on the top trim.
- Fuel efficiency: The SEL R-Line should average 24 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle returned 22.6 mpg on a mixed route.
Which 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Tiguan’s core strengths without the extra styling and equipment of the higher trims. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable with the smaller touchscreen and fewer amenities.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday convenience and a more polished feel without jumping all the way to the top of the range.
- SE R-Line Black: This trim is for you if you want a sportier appearance and more visual presence than the SE, while still staying below the flagship model.
- SEL R-Line: This is the most upscale and best-equipped version, with the larger digital display, standard AWD, adaptive front lighting, and the most premium cabin presentation.
Safety equipment is strongest on the higher trims because IQ.Drive is standard on all but the base model.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,196 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.88% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 88.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,525, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $22,669 sits slightly below last year's $24,344.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.
Because the Tiguan has broad appeal as a roomy, stylish compact SUV, well-kept examples should still attract buyers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
The 2023 Tiguan earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, though that rating does not apply for the 2023 calendar year.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
All Tiguans have standard Front Assist and Side Assist. Front Assist includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, while Side Assist adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Volkswagen also includes an Automatic Post Collision Braking System, and IQ.Drive adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, active blind-spot monitoring, Lane Assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist.
One caveat is that NHTSA testing is incomplete, and NHTSA also reported that the driver’s door unlatched and opened during the side-impact test. That is worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.88% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines roomy packaging, upscale styling, and enjoyable handling.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,468, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,669 average.
- It emphasizes standard advanced safety features and strong value.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $24,823, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $22,669 average.
- It adds standard lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, space, and overall appeal, the 2023 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2022 is the better value play, while the 2024 makes sense if you want the newer standard safety equipment and are willing to pay more.
