34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are BMW 5 Series models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the BMW 5 Series as powerful, comfortable, and refined, with a driving experience that feels polished across the lineup. Expert commentary also points to strong overall appeal in the way the car balances luxury, performance, and technology.
- Owners rate the BMW 5 Series between 4.0 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-maintained example with a clean history and a thorough pre-purchase inspection.
What should I look for when buying a used BMW 5 Series?
Across all model years, at 74% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 97% |
| 2025 | 94.9% |
| 2024 | 89.5% |
| 2023 | 88.1% |
| 2022 | 84.3% |
| 2021 | 75% |
| 2020 | 69.6% |
| 2019 | 63.1% |
| 2018 | 60.1% |
| 2017 | 58.2% |
| 2016 | 59.9% |
| 2015 | 60.6% |
| 2014 | 59.4% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: 2026 540i models include adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance as part of an Assisted Driving system, and the Driving Assistance Professional package adds steering-related lane-change support, evasive-maneuver support, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant.
- Infotainment: 2026 models use the BMW Curved Display with a 12.3-inch configurable driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display powered by BMW Operating System 8.5, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says it should return 28 mpg in combined driving, and we averaged 26.5 mpg on our Southern California testing loop.
Which BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?
The 2026 BMW 5 Series offers these trims:
- 530i: The entry model uses mild-hybrid technology to improve efficiency and comes standard with rear-wheel drive.
- 540i: This is the best-value trim, adding the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, standard xDrive all-wheel drive, and the extra refinement and effortless speed that make the 5 Series especially appealing.
- 550e: This plug-in hybrid broadens the lineup for shoppers who want electrified power.
- i5: This all-electric model expands the range for buyers interested in a battery-powered sedan.
- i5 M60: This performance-focused electric trim adds a sportier character within the i5 lineup.
- M5: This high-performance model brings the most serious performance focus in the lineup.
- M5 Touring: This wagon body style adds extra versatility while keeping the M5 performance identity.
What BMW 5 Series do most buyers choose?
The BMW 5 Series years with the most listings are 2022, 2023, and 2019.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 1,540 | 37.7% |
| 2023 | 1,411 | 35.5% |
| 2019 | 1,362 | 38.6% |
| 2018 | 1,356 | 38.6% |
| 2024 | 1,280 | 35.6% |
| 2020 | 1,166 | 39.2% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a wider selection of trims, prices, and condition levels to compare. They also often sit in the sweet spot between newer features and more accessible used pricing.
What is the BMW 5 Series's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $48,586 | −13.08% |
| 2018 | $18,348 | −11.21% |
| 2022 | $33,433 | −8.53% |
| 2016 | $12,205 | −8.23% |
| 2019 | $20,549 | −8.13% |
| 2021 | $28,838 | −7.75% |
| 2020 | $25,292 | −7.02% |
| 2023 | $37,780 | −6.97% |
| 2024 | $43,738 | −6.72% |
| 2015 | $11,143 | −6.46% |
| 2014 | $10,696 | −5.74% |
| 2017 | $16,968 | −4.4% |
The table shows broad price declines across the lineup, which is good news if you’re shopping used because it opens up more value at every age. The newest models are seeing some of the largest drops, while older years are changing more slowly. That pattern gives you room to compare recent features against lower entry prices.
The 2017, 2014, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the BMW 5 Series safe?
- 2026: 9/10
- 2024: 6/10
- 2021: 9/10
- 2018: 9/10
- 2017: 9/10
The 2026 5 Series includes an Assisted Driving system with adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance, and the Driving Assistance Professional package adds lane-change support, evasive-maneuver support, an emergency stop system, and Highway Assistant.
For the safest used buy, the 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2026 models all post the highest confirmed score of 9/10.
Should I buy a used BMW 5 Series now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −13.08% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −6.72%.
- Deal availability: The 2024 model has 35.6% good and great deals.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2022 model has the most listings at a current average price of $33,433. The BMW 5 Series offers a refined cabin, strong road manners, and a balanced mix of performance and luxury that has long defined the nameplate.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The 2026 5 Series pairs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with 375 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, rising to 398 lb-ft with eBoost assistance, and it returns 28 mpg in combined driving.

Customers say
The BMW 5 Series is highly regarded for its powerful performance, luxurious interior, and smooth handling across all model years. Owners appreciate the sporty yet refined driving experience, making it enjoyable for both daily use and longer trips. Many praise the comfortable and well-equipped interiors, along with advanced technology features. However, some drivers express concerns about high maintenance costs, limited rear seat space in some models, and the complexity of the iDrive system, which can be confusing. Overall, it remains a favorite among those seeking a blend of luxury and performance.

Great features, very comfortable, plenty of power. Just a solid vehicle for the price point all the way around, I love it and I don’t understand why they don’t cost more for what you get. Way under valued

Why it stands out
The 2022 BMW 5 Series stands out as a midsize luxury sedan that still leans into BMW’s performance heritage, even as it has become more comfort-focused than older versions. It offers a strong mix of technology, refinement, and driving appeal, and it remains more engaging than many of its staid competitors. At the same time, it is a pricey and complex car, and its technology can be tough to master.
For 2022, the 5 Series carried over the 2021 facelift with a tweaked front end and a larger infotainment touchscreen. BMW also offered plenty of safety equipment, and every model came standard with blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings with lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams. Some of the best systems, including adaptive cruise control and surround view monitoring, remained optional. The 2022 model year saw no major changes beyond that, so buyers get a well-equipped sedan without a lot of year-to-year upheaval.
There are tradeoffs, though. Reviewers noted that the steering and suspension in the 530i, 540d, and 540i did not feel as engaging as older versions of these cars, and the car could feel heavy. Even so, the 2022 BMW 5 Series remains appealing for shoppers who want a luxurious sedan with real performance credibility, a broad feature set, and the kind of polish that has long defined the nameplate.
