The BMW 7 Series' current nationwide average price is $43,877, and its nationwide average price reached a low of $39,487 over the past year. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the BMW 7 Series a good car?
Yes — the BMW 7 Series is a strong choice if you want a flagship luxury sedan with a rich feature set and a polished driving experience. The all-generations owner rating is 4.53/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the 7 Series for its luxurious cabin, powerful performance, and comfortable ride. They also highlight the spacious interior and advanced technology, which help make it feel special on long drives and in everyday use.
Expert reviews rate the 2024 and 2023 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs center on the infotainment system, the complexity of some features, and the uneven plug-in hybrid driving feel in recent years. Those are the kinds of compromises you weigh against the 7 Series’ comfort, power, and upscale character.
33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are BMW 7 Series models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently praise the BMW 7 Series for its luxury, strong performance, and comfortable ride. Across the model years, it also earns credit for its upscale interior and advanced technology, which are central to its appeal.
- Owners rate the BMW 7 Series between 1.0 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is tied to age, complexity, and maintenance history, so a well-documented example matters a great deal.
What should I look for when buying a used BMW 7 Series?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 75.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 96.4% |
| 2025 | 94.7% |
| 2024 | 90.8% |
| 2023 | 84.9% |
| 2022 | 82.5% |
| 2021 | 74.6% |
| 2020 | 71.3% |
| 2019 | 64.8% |
| 2018 | 62% |
| 2017 | 56.8% |
| 2016 | 57.9% |
| 2015 | 57.6% |
| 2014 | 62.1% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Fuel efficiency: The 750e does, however, deliver fantastic fuel mileage. The EPA rates the 750e at 65 MPGe (electric) and 25 mpg (gas) combined, but we saw almost 28 mpg in a week of driving. BMW also claims a 34-mile electric range, but that seems optimistic. By our estimate, we got about 26 miles. The battery takes a little over three hours to juice on a Level 2 AC charger, but it can't use DC fast chargers.
- Infotainment: Behind the wheel, 7 Series drivers are greeted by a massive curved-screen display that melds a 12.3-inch driver's screen with a 14.9-inch infotainment display. BMW recently updated the car's software to iDrive 8.5, which it says is a more smartphone-like interface with more customization options than iDrive 8.0, used in last year's redesigned 7 Series models.
Which BMW 7 Series trim should I buy?
The 2024 BMW 7 Series offers these trims:
- 740i: The entry-level 740i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, rear-wheel drive, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It suits you if you want the core 7 Series experience and strong value within the lineup.
- 740i xDrive: This version adds BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive and is the best value in the lineup, pairing the same six-cylinder power with extra traction.
- 750e xDrive: The plug-in hybrid adds 483 hp, 516 lb-ft of torque, and a 14.4-kWh battery pack, along with the ability to drive on electric power for short trips. It suits you if you want the most electrified version in the range.
- 760i: The V8-powered 760i brings 536 hp, 553 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD, and the most vigorous driving experience. It also opens the door to luxury touches such as two-tone paint and Cashmere wool interior.
What BMW 7 Series do most buyers choose?
The BMW 7 Series years with the most listings are 2023, 2022, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 728 | 34.9% |
| 2022 | 690 | 36.1% |
| 2024 | 639 | 37.6% |
| 2025 | 618 | 35.6% |
| 2021 | 531 | 34.7% |
| 2019 | 517 | 34.8% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you more inventory to compare and a wider spread of prices and conditions. That usually makes it easier to find the right mix of features, mileage, and deal quality.
What is the BMW 7 Series's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $81,967 | −17.64% |
| 2024 | $68,143 | −15.62% |
| 2022 | $42,513 | −15.0% |
| 2023 | $61,719 | −13.83% |
| 2017 | $19,389 | −12.22% |
| 2019 | $24,233 | −11.17% |
| 2020 | $31,907 | −11.02% |
| 2021 | $37,319 | −10.85% |
| 2015 | $13,845 | −10.01% |
| 2016 | $17,764 | −9.23% |
| 2014 | $13,021 | −7.2% |
| 2018 | $22,949 | −6.24% |
Most model years are down by double digits, which creates opportunities for used buyers looking for a luxury sedan with a lower entry price than new. The pattern also shows that newer examples are falling sharply, while older ones are changing more slowly. That makes the recent model years especially interesting if you want the latest features without paying new-car pricing.
The 2018, 2014, and 2016 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the BMW 7 Series safe?
- 2024: 8/10
- 2023: 8/10
BMW now offers a slate of standard active safety features, including forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, adaptive headlamps, parking sensors, safe exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
For the safest used buy, the 2023 and 2024 models both post the highest confirmed score of 8/10.
Should I buy a used BMW 7 Series now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −17.64% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −15.62%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 35.6% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 37.6%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2023 model has the most listings at a current average price of $61,719. The BMW 7 Series offers a spacious, luxurious cabin that makes it especially appealing if you want a flagship sedan with a premium feel.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: For 2024, BMW offers three potent powertrains in the 7 Series. New in 2023 were the 740i and 760i, both using 48-volt mild hybrid assist systems.
- Tech: Behind the wheel, 7 Series drivers are greeted by a massive curved-screen display that melds a 12.3-inch driver's screen with a 14.9-inch infotainment display. BMW recently updated the car's software to iDrive 8.5, which it says is a more smartphone-like interface with more customization options than iDrive 8.0, used in last year's redesigned 7 Series models.
- Safety: BMW now offers a slate of standard active safety features, including forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, adaptive headlamps, parking sensors, safe exit warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
- Starting price: For 2024, the BMW 7 Series starts at $97,395 (including a $995 destination fee).
If you're buying used today, the 2023 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Owners appreciate the robust engines, advanced technology, and spaciousness, which make it a joy for both city driving and long trips. However, many drivers express concerns about high maintenance costs, potential reliability issues, and the complexity of some interior features. Overall, the 7 Series is seen as a fantastic option for those seeking a combination of luxury and driving pleasure, though the ownership experience can be pricey.

I love this car I had a 740i BMW 2001 and a 740il. I preferred the 740i because of its turning radius. I’ve never seen a body style that I like better. I will definitely buy this car if the price comes due to the high mileage. Waiting patiently.

Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW 7 Series stands out as a full-size luxury sedan that blends strong performance with a long history of technology leadership. BMW’s flagship has always leaned into innovation, and this generation continues that theme with a wide range of powertrains, including mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and the all-electric i7. For buyers who want a large sedan that still reflects BMW’s sporting character, that mix of power and efficiency is a major part of its appeal.
It also brings a deeply upscale cabin and a long list of modern features. The interior includes BMW’s Live Cockpit setup with a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 14.9-inch curved infotainment display, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air updates, a standard head-up display, quad-zone climate control, front seat massagers, and a panoramic glass roof. The 7 Series also offers rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive, plus suspension and steering hardware designed to keep such a large sedan feeling composed and agile. On the downside, the 7 Series is expensive to buy and equip, and its poor turning circle can make it less convenient in tight spaces than its size suggests.
Performance is another defining trait. The 2021 BMW 7 Series offers a 394-horsepower 3.0-liter inline-six in the 740i, a 536-horsepower 4.4-liter V8 in the 760i, and plug-in hybrid versions with 483 horsepower and 560 horsepower. The i7 adds 449 horsepower, 536 horsepower, or 650 horsepower depending on version, and it can charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes on a DC fast charger. That breadth of choices makes the 2021 7 Series especially distinctive for shoppers who want a luxury sedan that can be tailored toward comfort, efficiency, or outright power.
