What should I look for when buying a used Honda Pilot?
Across all model years, at 74.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 91.1% |
| 2025 | 90.9% |
| 2024 | 89.2% |

| 2017 | 59.8% |
| 2016 | 58.7% |
| 2015 | 58.4% |
| 2014 | 58.1% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Honda Sensing suite
- Infotainment: larger standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel for all trim levels
- Fuel efficiency: The 2026 Pilot is estimated to return up to 22 mpg combined (19/27 mpg city/highway) with the FWD layout. With AWD, the EPA estimates a slight drop to 21 mpg combined (19/25 mpg city/highway), while the off-road-capable TrailSport drops by about another 1 mpg across the board.
Which Honda Pilot trim should I buy?
The 2026 Honda Pilot offers these trims:
- Sport: The entry-level trim starts the lineup with front-wheel drive standard, while all-wheel drive is available. It also gets the Honda Sensing safety suite, the larger standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and the 10.2-inch digital instrument panel.
- EX-L: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds all-wheel drive standard, a removable second-row seat, leather seats, and the wireless phone charger.
- TrailSport: This trim adds the off-road-focused hardware and capability in the lineup, and it stands apart for its decent off-road abilities.
- Touring: This trim adds a panoramic sunroof, premium audio, and a hands-free power liftgate.
- Black Edition: This top trim brings blacked-out exterior trim and red interior accents.
What Honda Pilot do most buyers choose?
The Honda Pilot years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 4,460 | 35.7% |
| 2025 | 3,807 | 33.4% |
| 2023 | 3,259 | 34.4% |
| 2022 | 3,027 | 34.9% |
| 2026 | 2,635 | 32.8% |
| 2021 | 2,620 | 34.7% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a strong mix of newer features, broad availability, and enough listings to compare prices and equipment. They also sit close enough to the latest generation to feel current while still offering used-car value.
What is the Honda Pilot's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $28,532 | −9.65% |
| 2019 | $20,427 | −8.46% |
| 2020 | $22,359 | −8.06% |
| 2018 | $18,182 | −7.56% |
| 2015 | $11,516 | −6.8% |
| 2023 | $36,944 | −6.57% |
| 2025 | $42,386 | −5.75% |
| 2017 | $17,117 | −5.64% |
| 2021 | $25,165 | −5.58% |
| 2016 | $14,836 | −5.13% |
| 2024 | $38,953 | −4.94% |
| 2014 | $10,824 | −2.41% |
Most Honda Pilot model years are down year over year, which is good news if you're shopping used and want to benefit from softer pricing. The declines are fairly broad across the lineup, with several recent years showing meaningful drops. A few older years have changed less, which suggests they have held value relatively better than the rest of the group.
The 2014, 2024, and 2016 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Honda Pilot safe?
- 2026: 6/10

For the safest used buy, the 2016 and 2020 models both post the highest confirmed score of 9/10.
Should I buy a used Honda Pilot now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −5.75% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −4.94%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 33.4% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 35.7%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $38,953. The Honda Pilot offers a roomy cabin, generous cargo space, and a practical family-focused layout that make it easy to live with.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Under the hood of the 2026 Honda Pilot is the same 3.5-liter V6 engine as before. It produces 285 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque and is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
- Tech: For 2026, the Honda Pilot upgrades to a larger standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel for all trim levels.

Reviewed a 2013 Honda Pilot on Aug 20, 2025
The Honda Pilot was redesigned in 2009 with a slightly boxer look with larger windows pillars that result in more blind spots than previous models. This is due to government regulation. Outward visibility is affected by the changes, but it is not as bad as newer vehicles. The 250HP 6 is as strong as the earlier model and acceleration times are not affected by the additional weight in this generation. The car is smoother and quieter than both the 1st and the 3rd generation models. Handling is very good as well and outshine the 3rd generation pilots. Interior volume with both rows folded is very good at 87 cubic feet. All pilots are spacious, with the first taking the edge with 91. The pluses of this car is reliability, repair simplicity good handling, quiet interior, and precise steering. The Pilot falls a little short in acceleration and fuel mileage. Typical city gas mileage is 17 mpg with the 2wd and 15.5 with the 4wd versions. Higgway is 21 at 80 mph, which is today's cruise speed. Unless the car is towing, the engine transmission and brakes dont get tired. This car is a 4 star car. It does most things well,

Summary
With 133 currently listed for sale near Austin, TX and an average price of $26,641, 42.1% of 2022 Honda Pilots for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Honda Pilot 4.83 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Honda Pilot stands out as a family-focused midsize SUV that blends space, comfort, and a strong feature set. In the third generation, Honda gave the Pilot a more tech-forward personality, and by 2022 it added standard LED headlights, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, standard blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. That makes it appealing for buyers who want a practical three-row SUV with modern connectivity and a solid list of safety equipment without having to move up the lineup.
It also offers the kind of everyday usability that helps the Pilot remain popular. The cabin is known for generous cargo space, and owners often praise the spacious interior, smooth ride, and quiet cabin. At the same time, the Pilot is not perfect: fuel economy is only average, and some reviewers felt the interior materials were cheap. Even so, the 2022 Honda Pilot’s combination of room, comfort, and useful standard features gives it broad appeal for shoppers who need a versatile family hauler.
