The Toyota Prius's current nationwide average price is $18,991, and its nationwide average price reached a low of $14,707 over the past year. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023 and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the Toyota Prius is a strong used-car pick if you want efficiency, practicality, and a long-running reputation for dependable daily driving. The all-generations owner rating is 4.66/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the Prius for its outstanding fuel economy, comfortable ride, and everyday usefulness. Cargo space and safety also come up often as reasons shoppers like it, especially if you want a car that fits commuting and routine errands well.
Expert reviews rate the 2016 and 2024 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs in recent expert-tested years center on real-world fuel economy falling short of expectations, a cramped back seat, and limited cargo space.
33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota Prius models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently describe the Prius as a dependable hybrid with strong fuel economy and a comfortable ride. Across the model years in the data, it also earns praise for practicality, value, and everyday commuting ease.
- Owners rate the Toyota Prius between 4.33 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally tied more to age, mileage, and hybrid-system wear than to the Prius nameplate itself, so a careful history check and pre-purchase inspection matter.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota Prius?
Across all model years, at 68.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 92.5% |
| 2025 | 90.7% |
| 2024 | 89.6% |
| 2023 | 84.2% |
| 2022 | 78.8% |
| 2021 | 68.5% |
| 2020 | 64.6% |
| 2019 | 61.3% |
| 2018 | 58.6% |
| 2017 | 57.1% |
| 2016 | 54% |
| 2015 | 53.1% |
| 2014 | 52.9% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0)
- Infotainment: Toyota Audio Multimedia (TAM) infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA gave the Prius Nightshade Edition a 52 mpg rating in the combined, city, and highway categories.
Which Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2025 Toyota Prius offers these trims:
- LE: The entry trim comes with the Toyota Audio Multimedia system and an 8-inch touchscreen, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- XLE: This trim adds more equipment and can be optioned with the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, making it a strong value choice if you want a more upscale tech setup.
- Nightshade Edition: This trim adds black 19-inch wheels, black exterior trim, and exclusive Karashi paint for a more distinctive look.
- Limited: This trim gets the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen and adds the most advanced available convenience and visibility features in the lineup.
What Toyota Prius do most buyers choose?
The Toyota Prius years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2026.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 1,468 | 41.4% |
| 2025 | 1,423 | 41.1% |
| 2026 | 938 | 44.9% |
| 2023 | 922 | 35.1% |
| 2014 | 771 | 30.9% |
| 2015 | 719 | 32.3% |
Higher-volume years usually give you more choices, more price competition, and a better chance of finding the trim and condition you want. They also tend to be the easiest years to compare side by side because there are more listings in the market.
What is the Toyota Prius's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $29,407 | −7.47% |
| 2023 | $27,967 | −0.07% |
| 2021 | $20,965 | +0.55% |
| 2024 | $29,641 | +0.85% |
| 2018 | $17,931 | +1.08% |
| 2016 | $15,260 | +1.71% |
| 2014 | $11,148 | +1.9% |
| 2022 | $23,099 | +2.01% |
| 2017 | $16,595 | +2.23% |
| 2019 | $19,757 | +3.02% |
| 2020 | $21,658 | +4.24% |
| 2015 | $12,604 | +5.82% |
The table shows a mixed resale picture, with several newer years posting small declines while many older years are still moving upward. That means you can find some recent-model softness, but plenty of older Priuses continue to command firmer prices. Overall, the pattern still supports the Prius’s reputation for strong value retention.
The 2021, 2023, and 2024 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2015, 2020, and 2019 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

Should I buy a used Toyota Prius now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −7.47% versus a year ago, and the 2023 model is at −0.07%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 41.1% good and great deals, and the 2023 model has 35.1%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $29,641. The Toyota Prius offers a practical hatchback layout that makes it easy to live with for commuting and everyday errands.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The Prius’ hybrid powertrain includes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine and an 83-kilowatt electric motor, and Toyota says the net output measures 194 horsepower.
- Tech: Both TAM systems include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio with a complimentary three-month trial to service, and access to five different connected services plans with variable free trial subscriptions.
- Safety: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) is standard in every 2025 Prius, and the collection also includes Proactive Driving Assist (PDA).
- Starting price: The Prius is available in LE, XLE, Nightshade Edition, and Limited trim levels, with pricing ranging from $29,545 to $36,560, including destination.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

The car is great. Awesome MGPs. I love the way I fit in the cockpit, it feels like I'm driving a spaceship. Driving is super smooth. I wish I had a backup cam because it's difficult to see out of the back window. Decent turn radius. Extra hidden storage tray in the trunk. You can pull back on the joystick to slow down without wearing out the brakes. There is a filter button for when you are driving through a stinky area. Even though it is a higher tech car I still feel like I can work on it without have to buy a bunch of unique tools. Now I just need to figure out how to maximize the MPGs by driving slower. Even with my lead foot I average 41 MPG.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Prius enters its fourth generation with many of the hallmarks that have made it so popular and a few new tricks as well. That combination is what keeps it distinctive: it remains one of the most recognizable hybrids and continues to sit at the center of the hybrid market. Toyota’s own framing suggests a car meant to challenge expectations while still protecting the Prius’s long-standing reputation as the hybrid benchmark.
What stands out most about the 2016 Prius is continuity with evolution. The source describes the earlier Prius as having turned heads with its unmistakable profile and fuel-saving capability, and says the 2016 model carries forward the traits that made it popular while adding some new tricks. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a familiar hybrid nameplate with enough freshening to feel current. At the same time, the description leaves room for the question of whether it can still retain its place as the “Hybrid King,” which hints that its appeal is tied as much to reputation as to any single feature.
