Expert review
Now half a decade old, the 2005 BMW X5 continues to set standards for what a performance-oriented luxury SUV can be.
A midsize 5-passenger SUV, the 2005 BMW X5 comes in 3.0i, 4.4i, and 4.8is model series, each equipped with a different engine. After a significant freshening for 2004, the 2005 X5 gets just a few changes for 2005. Automatic climate control is standard this year, new wood trim selections are available, and the 4.4i gains parking sensors.

What owners say
"Drivers generally love the 2005 BMW X5 for its comfort, powerful performance, and solid handling, often praising its impressive driving experience and luxurious features. However, some owners express concerns about maintenance costs and ride smoothness, with a few reporting significant issues with the suspension and overall reliability."
strong, excellent build, powerful engine and perfect track control. There is absolutely no shortage of power in any RPM range, it could do with more interior space, overall an excellent car to own with minor flaws. Strongly recommend it. Avoid buying pre 2003 Models.
September 22, 2009I leased a brand new 2010 Mercedes ML350 before this X5. The E53 (X5) as is the technical term- outpowers its German counterpart. The ML didn't feel tough and infact it was like a puffy and sluggish sedan for soccer moms in the OC. The 4.4i Sport package handling is excellent on the freeway, curves, and going up hill. The set back is it is very bouncy going over speed bumps and potholes. It's not the best daily driver, but then again this is a second car. It's an excellent value as a used car because for the price I bought it, you can't easily find a car that's got what this has. Brand new this car cost close to $62k after options and taxes. I paid $8k. That's alot of car for the price. By comparison the 2007-2012 X5 became too tame and lost their urban attitude in favor of a very rounded SUV that look more like a wagon.
February 7, 2015The X5 has met all expectations. Even gas mileage - I average 21 mpg combined city/hwy. Comfortable, safe, and cool looking. Plenty of power with the 3.0. The free maintenance is great. No charge for the first 50K miles. great looking car. lots of options, ...German technology, all wheels drive. smooth ride. good gas millage.

October 25, 2014There is nothing like a BMW for having that feel that you are in control of the road. Solid construction and incredible handling. A 120,000 mile car still feels like it has 20,000 miles and many more miles to go.
April 29, 2014comfy, drives like a dream, perfect for long roads because it flies too. handles really well for an SUV, the Xdrive is very helpfupl in any weather, even though the suspension could have been a bit tighter for better handling at higher speeds.
September 9, 2009I liked everything, power, brakes, transmission, all the driver comforts, lights, instruments, smooth engine, tons of grunt !!! a real head turner. Even at 185,000 Kilometers now there is not one body rattle or squeak !!! I have had 4 Jap Suvs before the X5 and they all rattled and squeaked also most over heated when towing my boat on hill work. The X5 temp needle doesn't move !! I wish I could afford a new one I would certainly buy one.
July 16, 2013Nothing to dislike about my BMW X5. Acceleration of this car is Awsome. Powerful transmission and flows smoothly and strongly on the road without hesitation. I will be towing my sports motircycle using a hauler/trailer to travel many different places, and enjoy both my car and the motorcycle ride any where I please to do so.
July 21, 2012Overall I love my BMW x5, but it could have a smoother ride. The actual performance and durability is awesome! Id definitely purchase another.
September 2, 2020Even though it's an 05 the stance and styling still looks good. Interior wise it's comfortable and is optioned well. Radio is dated. The 4.8 has good power and still gets 22mpgs on highway which isn't bad for a AWD luxury tank.
March 13, 2015Expensive to maintain, NAVI is old school with no touch screen. SUV is a solid vehicle with great power (315hp) and comfortable ride. Vehicle is reliable and a pleasure to drive. The 4 yr/50k mile warranty cover just about everything. Would own another one.
