Expert review
Still the rugged, basic truck of the early 1990s.
The 2005 Explorer was the last of the third generation, which debuted for 2002. It's based on a truck frame and has more heavy-duty chops than many of its owners will ever use. Key for 2005 is standard stability control.

What owners say
"Overall, Ford Explorer owners appreciate its comfort, reliability, and styling, making it a suitable family SUV. Many drivers enjoy its roominess and decent handling, especially in adverse weather. However, some owners have pointed out mechanical issues and poor gas mileage, which can be a drawback for certain shoppers."
Good SUV, good handling, great 4-wheel drive.
June 6, 2008I have no problems with the Explorer. It's a comfortable ride and provides plenty of room without making the vehicle seem 'too big'. Seven seats and even the rear ones provide leg room, enough for an adult.
April 24, 2007Drive is nice, gas milage is a bit low but the auto 4WD plays that part and gets better in the summer months, lots of room with seating for 7. Breaking is good as well as the acceleration. Stereo system is good. Exterior styling is modern.

February 8, 2011nice vehicle, very roomy, luggage rack comes in handy, very comfortable seats, driver side air bag, passenger air bag, side air bags, lots of room in the back, very nice smooth ride, rear door opens like a hatch bag also
January 8, 2013The Explorer is a midsized SUV, that’s extremely reliable as well as very stylish. The Explorer is a No frills reliable truck, that get’s decent high way mileage. Some of the newer models step up the options available, but this truck really shines without those extra gadgets.
January 27, 2008its a beast....rolling with a 4.6L V8 , a custom tune, true dual exhaust and a cold air intake its like a big mustang. a little scary around corners at high speed but otherwise its awesome....more mods to come like underdrive pullies until i can afford a supercharger....and then after that possibly a 4.6L DOHC 32V....
August 9, 2010good family car, needs more power, good handling on the road, ugly shape the new shape it looks muc better, it has 4.0 V6 engine with 210 BHP which compare to the body weight it is too low, at the end it is good for family, and it is cheap to own and maintain
July 16, 2009Found car all around practical for my needs nice drive for the money and has alot of features in it
May 5, 2021A wonderful reliable vehicle. It performs very good. The ride is a little trucky. It is built just fine. A nice looking vehicle The cost was within my range and is a fun truck to drive. I like this vehicle
November 21, 2009The performance of this truck is great. It is build great compared to other Ford model cars. The appearance is very nive, great exterior which I would love to have some things done to is still great. The interior is Leather & wood grain throughout. It has 2nd & 3rd row seating, or extra cargo. It is pretty good on gas, especially on long trips. It is a pretty fun car.
