The Accord is the best hybrid sedan in the midsize segment.
An affordable car can be enjoyable to drive and make drivers look respectable. That’s what the Honda Accord has done for 50 years and 11 generations, because it's a name everyone knows and trusts. Less well known is the Accord Hybrid, which makes up only 30% of Accord sales due to its higher starting price. Honda hasn't made the Accord all-hybrid like the Toyota Camry, so the gas-only LX and SE trims continue to lead in sales. But if buyers have wiggle room in their budgets for an MSRP between $35,000 and $40,000, they'll find more amenities and performance, plus fuel efficiency that tops 50 mpg in a near-perfect package.
Verdict: With the current-generation hybrid, the Accord is still writing the book on refinement and style for less.
We think the current Accord looks expensive on the outside. At its 2023 debut, we compared the curvaceous body and clean, uncluttered overall design to the Audi A7 which retailed for double the price of a base Accord Hybrid. That holds true for 2026, and even more so as luxury brands have traded classiness for tackiness. Honda knows how to cut a profile while keeping manufacturing costs to a minimum. The Accord Hybrid's low shoulder line evokes the grace of a rear-wheel drive (RWD) car; all the drivetrain components that would ordinarily raise the hood on a front-wheel-drive (FWD) car like this are positioned lower to the ground. The hood is below the waist height of an average driver and gracefully tapers to the front fascia, along with two leading lines connecting the top edges of the grille. Even the sides of the hood have defined edges that add muscle.
It's a simple and memorable fascia, too, with slim headlights and thin DRLs, and the most basic of lower air intakes with a few accents of matte silver and an unfussy grille with a polished black surround. The tail is short and echoes the lines of a fastback—hence our comparison to the A7—and the taillights look stately. Park the Accord Hybrid next to a Mercedes-Benz E-Class with three-pointed star icons in the lights—one is tasteful, the other is garish. Right now, few if any automakers are exercising restrained design as well as Honda.
For 2026, the Sport and Sport-L trims add black window trim and black badges on the trunk to complement the existing black trim on the mirrors and antenna. Other than that, the handsome exterior styling carries over.
The interior is more pedestrian but still holds up. We think it's too similar to the Civic Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid cabins, but Honda applies sturdy, grained plastics, expensive-feeling switches and controls including the air vent toggles, and on our Touring trim, padded leatherette surfaces on the door arm rests, the center console, and the lower dash. The matte plastic strip below the touchscreen, which houses a tiny volume knob, is the cheapest-looking part of the interior. The thickness of the steering wheel, the padding of the seats, and the minimal application of gloss black plastic trim are just right. There are $60,000 cars on sale that don't feel or look this good. Many automakers are losing their way and losing touch with their customers, but not Honda.
The Accord Hybrid makes just 12 horsepower more than the regular Accord gets from its turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four, but it's how the power is applied and felt that makes the hybrid's higher cost worth the difference. A 2.0-liter inline-four running on the lazier Atkinson cycle makes just 146 hp and 134 pound-feet of torque. Paired with two electric motors and a small battery, the powertrain can produce 204 hp and 247 lb-ft—a substantial torque increase over the gas model's 192 lb-ft.
Fuel economy is exceptional, although the EPA estimates are on par with the Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The best numbers are on the EX-L with the smallest 17-inch wheels and tires: 51 mpg city, 44 mpg highway, and 48 mpg combined. All other trims—which have 19-inch wheels and tires—are rated at 46 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 44 mpg combined. In our week of testing, it was easy to average 40-plus mpg.
There is no conventional transmission. Instead, like a pure electric car, the Accord Hybrid uses direct drive for a quick response without the initial lag off the line that accompanies most other hybrids. The gas engine functions primarily as a generator for the electric drive motor, and only under heavy acceleration or at highway speeds does the engine directly couple to the front axle. Honda also mimics the shift points of a transmission under acceleration, so the engine doesn't feel like an always-on generator. The car is natural and can be sedate or lively all at once. Better still, the torque is managed well enough so the front wheels don't spin under heavy acceleration.
The Sport mode keeps the gas engine ready to provide extra power and livens up the throttle response, but it's not necessary, even when passing. The sportier (and practical) driving experience comes from slowing down with one of six regenerative braking modes activated with the paddle shifters. The strongest mode can bring the Accord Hybrid to nearly a full stop at lower speeds. It's as effortless to slow down as it is to speed up, with no noise or powertrain vibrations to mar the experience.
One interesting feature is the charge mode when pressing the blue "e" battery button below the drive mode switch. Like a plug-in hybrid, it can charge the battery while driving. So if drivers want full power and driving conditions are draining the battery—say, if the car is on a long uphill stretch—drivers will need a fuller battery. Most will leave the hybrid setting to auto and let the car decide to run in EV mode (which it can do at highway speeds). It's this level of functionality, built around drivers who want to maximize their performance, that makes the Accord Hybrid so enjoyable to drive.
Handling composure is excellent, with minimal body lean and a surefooted agility. It's cushier than the previous-generation Accord—which was the most engaging in years—but the steering is still as sharp and as accurate as ever. If anything, the slightly softer ride and reactions make the Accord Hybrid more like a luxury car than the prior generations.
It's pathetic that many new cars have become so cheapened by screens that basic, tactile controls are missing. This is where Honda hits it out of the park.
Color-coded tiles on the infotainment screen, simple customization menus, manual climate controls, an ordinary PRNDL shifter, intuitive placement for all controls, and legible graphics all contribute to a stress-free experience. Admittedly, the volume knob is so small that a finger and thumb can barely nudge it, and there are no seek buttons or control shortcuts for any of the functions such as the stereo, map, or settings. Below the screen is wasted space that could be better used for these controls. But in 2026, if this is the worst we can say about a new car's daily functionality, that's really good.
Space, visibility, and ingress/egress are all above average for the midsize sedan class. Trunk space is a generous 16.7 cubic feet. The seats fold down, and total cargo space is unchanged from the gas-only Accord. Heated front seats with 10-way power adjustment and lumbar come standard, along with auto up/down front windows, dual-zone climate, full LED lighting, a moonroof, a proximity key, remote start, and four USB-C ports split between the front and rear seats. The EX-L and Touring come with an auto-dimming rearview mirror. EX-L, Sport-L, and Touring trims have a four-way power passenger seat and two driver memory positions. The Touring also comes with rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and ventilated front seats.
Whereas the gas-only Accord comes with a 9-inch touchscreen, the Accord Hybrid has a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen that spans the width of the center stack. SiriusXM is not offered on any trim, as Honda and Acura have dropped it across all new models. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, so drivers can still play their favorite stations if they have the SiriusXM app. Most trims have a no-name stereo with eight speakers, while the Touring has a 12-speaker Bose stereo.
A digital instrument panel is standard and can cycle through various vehicle information within the tachometer's empty space. On the Touring trim, it can also show maps and navigation thanks to Google built-in integration. This is also the one trim that offers a head-up display and HD radio. Amazon Alexa connectivity, a wireless phone charger, and HondaLink connected services are standard on all trims. So many features can be adjusted and customized in the infotainment screen, but features such as surround-view cameras, air purifiers, and custom ambient lighting are unavailable.
The 2026 Honda Accord Hybrid received a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and five-star ratings in all individual tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it a Top Safety Pick award, as well as the top Good rating in three crash tests and for headlights. Pedestrian-detection tech was rated Acceptable by the IIHS.
Rear-side airbags and front-knee airbags are standard, along with many driver assistance features. Automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, high-beam assist, traffic-sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control are all standard, along with Traffic Jam Assist for low-speed, hands-on driving scenarios on marked highways. The Touring also has rear automatic emergency braking, and all trims other than the Sport and Sport-L have front and rear parking sensors.
A new 2026 Accord Hybrid demands $5,400 more than a base non-hybrid Accord LX, and in return, offers larger wheels, more standard equipment, and the expected increase in performance and efficiency.
At $35,090 with destination, the Accord Hybrid in its base Sport trim is not cheap, yet it's competitive with midsize sedans from Toyota and Hyundai. The EX-L and Sport-L (the "L" denotes leather seats) are within $400 of each other, but it's the EX-L that offers more amenities and has the highest fuel economy ratings, since it shares the smallest wheels and tires with the base, gas-only LX. Their MSRPs are $36,390 and $36,790, respectively, while the Touring costs $40,790.
Honda does not do packages or standalone options on any trim. Dealer accessories such as wheels and spoilers are available, but the only factory cost-options are a few paint colors. Our Accord Touring Hybrid with Urban Gray Pearl paint was $41,245 (including destination). One scheduled service visit is included.
Since Honda rarely discounts its vehicles, it can be tempting to consider a competing brand, but resale values for the Accord Hybrid are strong. On CarGurus, the average list price for 2023-2026 models ranged between $27,300 and $34,500 at the time of writing, and Honda's track record for reliability is a big part of that resale value. As a new car, the Accord Hybrid outperforms other midsize sedans in almost every aspect, especially in refinement, style, and the operation of its hybrid system, which mimics the smoothness and power delivery of an EV. It is a great buy.
