In our recent testing, no vehicle has outperformed its prior generation like the Nissan Armada. Gutted and redone for the 2025 model year, the Armada brings power, towing capacity, premium materials, and luxury-grade driving dynamics at a reasonable price. For 2026, Nissan made a NISMO version as a trial run for its planned lineup of performance trucks. Slammed on air springs and painted like the Z sports car, this is yet another Armada trim that goes further than Toyota, Chevrolet, GMC, and Jeep are willing to for $80,000.
Verdict: The Armada offers a surprising level of quality, choice, and driving enjoyment that puts it ahead of the competition.
Big SUVs usually look like big buses, but on the Armada, Nissan injected the sportier look of its crossovers to avoid that aesthetic. It's still boxy, with hard angles on the A-pillars and D-pillars, and the doors and windows are almost perfectly flat and upright. Yet the softer curves on the bumpers, the fenders, and the window trim as it travels upward to the tailgate provide the right level of surface contrast. The double-bracketed running lights and the wide chrome bars running across the grille on most Armada trims are very imposing.
This is a tall, XL-size vehicle, yet the body is svelte when compared to the Ford Expedition, the Chevrolet Tahoe, the GMC Yukon, and the Jeep Grand Wagoneer—and downright petite next to the extended versions of those American SUVs. As a package, the Armada is closer in size and mission to the Toyota Sequoia. The Nissan, however, is finished like a tailored suit while the Toyota's vibe is that of a chunky pickup with a bed cap.
The NISMO is all Tokyo street style—a uniquely Japanese and unusually racy version of an SUV that's an off-road king in the Middle East, Australia, and Southeast Asia. Nissan executives admit the Armada NISMO is an experiment, as the company plans for off-road NISMO versions of the Frontier pickup redesign and upcoming Xterra revival. This Armada channels the essence of the Z NISMO, right down to the bright red accent lines tracing the entire bottom of the vehicle like neon underglow. The paint—Stealth Gray—is shared only with the Z. The body is dropped 0.7 inches, and when parked with the air suspension dropped further, the Armada NISMO squats so low that the rear bumper—a diffuser meant to evoke the GT-R—just might tap a curb. The 22-inch wheels are forged for less mass and higher strength, and the spokes are thin to show off the red brake calipers. NISMO badges are everywhere. The Armada detail on the D-pillar is a matte-finish, slightly darker red. Industrial air conditioners cannot match the surface area of the NISMO's grille. It's all wild and it works.
Inside, it's red and black for all three rows, including the red seatbelts, red dash accents, red hash mark on the steering wheel, and red stitching on the dash, doors, and console. It's a more muted red than all the accents outside—and full of microsuede. Metal pedal covers and a red ignition button cap off the NISMO treatment, along with a NISMO tachometer on the instrument cluster.
The superior design and quality are astonishing in any Armada. Aside from the Grand Wagoneer, there's no other non-luxury SUV with this level of quality. The center stack includes fine analog controls—a rotary dial for the driving modes, knurled silver tabs for the climate control, push buttons for the shifter and four-wheel drive (4WD)—and mixes that with two screens that are sharp, simple, and unobtrusive. The way the center stack curves into the covered console, which neatly houses a wireless phone charger and cupholders, is art by itself. Nothing feels cheap or overlooked. The Platinum Reserve adds quilted-leather upholstery, massaging front seats, and multicolor ambient lighting for just a few thousand (not tens of thousands) more than the NISMO.
Every Armada has a twin-turbocharged V6 that produces more power and torque than any competitor except the Sequoia, which comes exclusively as a hybrid. At 425 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, the Armada's 3.5-liter engine is creamy smooth in its delivery, refined in tone, and has a wide power band that pairs seamlessly with the nine-speed automatic transmission. In any situation, the Armada is quick and effortless.
The NISMO boosts output to 460 hp (on premium fuel) by modifying the valve clearances in each cylinder. Aside from that, there is no specific powertrain tune beyond the Sport mode also found in the other Armada trims. The exhaust is slightly unmuffled compared to a standard Armada, but without a trained ear, it's unnoticeable, and Nissan could have given the NISMO some bark like the Z. The brakes, too, are unchanged in size and setup. No issues there. The Armada stops securely, which is very reassuring in a vehicle weighing more than 6,000 pounds with the ability to tow 8,500 pounds.
The Armada's air suspension is the real magic sauce. Available only on the Pro-4X, the NISMO, and the Platinum Reserve, it provides the best body control in the segment and delivers a compliant ride, even with the NISMO's firmer damping. The NISMO is easy to drive and place in tight turns at speed, though the lack of torque vectoring on the back axle means the stability control kicks in early to remind you that this is an Armada, not a Z. The steering could be more accurate off-center, and while Nissan re-tuned the feel for the NISMO, it's not as precise as we'd like. That's more than offset by the suspension's perfect behavior, which elevates the Armada NISMO above any other vehicle in the segment. Not even the magnetic dampers and air springs on a Yukon Denali Ultimate—which costs another 20 grand—produce such excellent cornering ability and ride quality. Jeep’s Grand Wagoneer comes close, while the Expedition and the Sequoia are nowhere near this level of sophistication.
SV, SL, and Platinum trim levels come standard with rear-wheel drive (RWD). A part-time 4WD system with a low-range transfer case is optional on those models and standard on the Pro-4X, NISMO, and Platinum Reserve. Selecting the "auto" mode will instruct the system to shift into 4-Hi when needed, but unlike a full-time setup, it requires a moment to engage the front axle. In slippery or wet conditions, it's best to engage 4-Hi before setting off. The Pro-4X off-road trim adds a locking rear differential, all-terrain tires, skid plates, and increased suspension travel.
Fuel economy is EPA-estimated at 16 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined for all 4WD trims. That's on par with General Motors' full-size SUVs with the 5.3-liter V8 but significantly worse than the Expedition, the Grand Wagoneer, and the Sequoia. Outside a testing lab, full-size SUVs of any type get equally terrible gas mileage, so buyers shouldn't shop by numbers in this class.
The Armada comes with seven- or eight-passenger seating. The base SV comes only with a second-row bench seat. Captain's chairs are standard on the Platinum, Platinum Reserve, and NISMO. They are optional on the SL and Pro-4X. A bench can be added back on the Platinum trims. Headroom is generous in all three rows, and legroom in the second row is just as good as the first row's but, compared to the longer American SUVs, the Armada loses out in both second- and third-row legroom. The Tahoe and the Yukon make the best use of interior space, but their seats are not nearly as comfortable as those in the Armada.
Both the first and second row use Nissan's "Zero Gravity" cushioning, designed to reduce fatigue during long rides using NASA research, Nissan claims. They work. When paired with the 10-way heated, cooled, and massaging front seats—plus adjustable side bolsters on the NISMO—the Armada’s seat wraps around the driver, instead of the driver plopping onto a flatter, harder surface as in the GMC and Ford SUVs. There's a shiatsu function in the massage modes, befitting the Armada's Japanese heritage and manufacturing. It's strong and actually digs into the driver's and passenger's backs.
Outward visibility is good in all directions. The 360-degree cameras, which can show the sides of the front fenders and can project an image of the road as if it were underneath the vehicle, are great aids. Operating all the controls is simple. Save for the airflow, all climate functions are hard switches. There are seek buttons and a volume knob. The navigation and other vehicle settings are easy to work within the touchscreen, save for the stereo's advanced audio settings, which require too many menus. Otherwise, the legibility and clarity are good and not at all distracting. Nissan even positioned the steering wheel's scrolling dial to the angle of the driver's right thumb when it's in the proper 9-and-3 position.
Cargo capacity is good, but not as cavernous as the Ford or GM full-size SUVs. The Armada has 20.4 cubic feet of space behind its third row, 56.3 cubic feet behind the second row, and 97.1 cubic feet with both the second and third rows folded. On trims with air suspension, buttons on the side of the cargo area can raise or lower the vehicle (when it's running) to make accessing the cargo area easier.
Two 12.3-inch displays neatly integrated into the dashboard come standard on the base SV, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and SiriusXM with 360L satellite radio. We'd recommend upgrading to the SL, which adds Google Maps, Google Assistant, weather, over-the-air updates, and Wi-Fi. The SV is best avoided, since its audio system has only six speakers to cover the giant cabin. A 12-speaker, 600-watt Klipsch stereo comes standard on all other trims. The same goes for USB ports (six on the SV, eight on all other trims) and a 120-volt AC outlet, which the SV does not have. Platinum and above trims have two 14.3-inch displays running the same software as the base hardware.
ProPilot Assist 2.2 with hands-free operation on highways is optional on all trims except the SV and the NISMO, where it is unavailable. A digital rearview mirror is standard or available on all trims except the SV and the SL. Those who tow heavy trailers will want the Platinum or above to get an integrated trailer brake controller.
The Platinum and Pro-4X trims also come with a built-in dash cam that can record front and rear, along with an interior camera. They can also be triggered to record video when a car or person approaches the vehicle when parked with the ignition off. NissanConnect services, which requires a subscription with Nissan and is provided via SiriusXM, can provide stolen vehicle tracking and remotely slow or restrict the vehicle.
Many driver-assistance features come standard, including adaptive cruise control, driver-attention monitor, front and rear parking sensors, surround-view camera system, ProPilot Assist (not hands-free), blind-spot monitors, lane-keep assist, traffic-sign recognition, high-beam assist, and front and rear automatic emergency braking.
Crash-test ratings for the current-generation Armada were unavailable at the time of writing, but the above list of standard driver-assist features provides some reassurance. The Armada also comes standard with front, front-side, front-knee, and curtain airbags. An additional front far-side airbag is standard on the Platinum Reserve.
The 2026 Nissan Armada starts at $58,840 for the SV trim with RWD, but the bulk of Armada models on sale will be priced in the $60,000 to $75,000 range. The outliers are the NISMO—which was $82,000 as-tested—and loaded versions of the Platinum Reserve, which can top $87,000.
In any trim, the Armada is a great value full-size SUV. The style, refinement, quality materials, and the polished demeanor are even comparable to full-size luxury SUVs such as the BMW X7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. That doesn’t make life easy for the Infiniti QX80, which is essentially a rebadged version of the Armada, but it does make the Nissan a compelling option.
