The Volvo EX40 is a small electric crossover formerly known as the XC40 Recharge. Since the list of relatively affordable luxury SUVs is a short one, consider cars as well as crossovers. Competitors for the EX40 include the Genesis GV60 and the BMW i4.

What’s New for the 2025 Volvo EX40
The biggest change for the 2025 Volvo EX40 is that it used to be called the Volvo XC40 Recharge. The name change makes sense as Volvo’s lineup shifts and it becomes more important to distinguish among different types of plug-in vehicles. Otherwise, it’s the same lovely and elegant small crossover, now with upgraded range and DC fast-charging speed, plus battery upgrades for all dual-motor configurations.
Design
Where many small crossovers lean towards “amorphous blob” as a design direction, and others hint at sportiness that isn’t actually there, this Volvo quietly stands out from the crowd. The Volvo EX40 is upright and elegant, with crisp, squared-off surfaces that set off the range of mostly muted pastel tones. It’s a look that doesn’t scream for attention but gets it anyway. The EX40 comes standard with 19-inch wheels and is available with 20-inchers. Five years in, and this Volvo looks as fresh as ever.
Powertrain
The 2025 Volvo EX40 is quick and light on its feet, making for an enjoyable driving experience. It’s available with two powertrains, in single- and dual-motor configurations, with rear- and all-wheel drive (RWD and AWD), respectively. The base version consists of an electric motor paired with an 82-kWh battery pack, rated for 248 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The dual-motor version uses the same battery, but the extra motor pushes output to 402 hp and 494 lb-ft. Both versions get a single-speed automatic transmission. Range estimates are 296 miles for single-motor models and 260 miles for dual-motor models. DC fast-charging can top off the battery to 80% in about 26 minutes.

Interior
The Volvo EX40 seats five, though it’ll be more comfortable for four, especially if the rear passengers are tall. Despite the snug second row, the EX40 is warm and inviting inside, with a minimalist look and feel. Materials are upscale, with offerings like sophisticated wool-blend upholstery and a crystal shift knob. Good visibility from the driver’s seat enhances practicality and comfort. Cargo space is below average for a luxury SUV, though that broad category also factors in vehicles that are considerably larger. The EX40 can stow 16 cubic feet behind the second row and a total of 57.5 cubic feet with the second row folded down. There’s also a small storage area under the hood, and space for the charging cable in an underfloor cubby.
Technology
The 2025 Volvo EX40 comes standard with a 9-inch touchscreen, a 12-inch digital instrument display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, voice recognition, navigation, and an audio system with eight speakers. Volvo offers a Harman Kardon stereo with 13 speakers, but otherwise, the EX40 is light on available tech upgrades.
