The Toyota Corolla celebrates 60 years in 2027, and this current model is part of the 12th generation, which was introduced in 2020. Sitting in the compact-car class, the Corolla’s primary competitors include the Honda Civic, the Hyundai Elantra, the Kia K4, and the Mazda3. The 2027 Toyota Corolla has three trims: LE, SE, and XSE.

What’s New for the 2027 Toyota Corolla
The Toyota Corolla had a mid-cycle refresh in 2023, which included new front and rear styling, more standard safety tech, an updated infotainment system, and a simplified engine lineup. There's a new black exterior paint option called Inked for the 2027 model year, but the Corolla is otherwise a carryover model.
Design
The Corolla has compact sedan styling and adopts the trapezoidal grille and slender headlights seen throughout the Toyota lineup. The base LE has 16-inch steel wheels, and 16-inch alloys are available. There are standard 18-inch alloy wheels starting at the SE trim level. There are no appearance packages on the Corolla, but the SE and XSE trims both offer a two-tone paint option with an “Inked” (i.e. black) roof.
Powertrain
With the redesign in 2023, Toyota dropped the old base 1.8-liter engine as well as the manual transmission from the Corolla sedan lineup. Now the only gas powertrain option is a 169-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a dynamic-shift continuously variable transmission (CVT). There is also a hybrid powertrain option, but we cover that in a separate article. The gas-only Corolla sedan is front-wheel drive and the most fuel-efficient model, the LE, gets 32 mpg in the city, 41 mpg on the highway, and 35 mpg in combined driving. Both the SE and XSE deliver 34 mpg in combined driving.

Interior
The 2027 Toyota Corolla seats five, but as a compact sedan it’s better suited to four. Cargo capacity rings in at 13.1 cubic feet, which is the least amount of space offered by any of the competitors in the compact car class. Thankfully, there are 60/40 split fold-down rear seats, which creates a little flexibility. Cloth seating surfaces are standard, with synthetic leather seats becoming standard on the top XSE trim. It’s also worth noting that the rear seat has a standard pull-down center armrest with cup holders, which isn't always the case on a base trim. Moonroofs are reserved for the XSE trim.
Technology
The Toyota Corolla proves that “compact” and “entry-level” don’t mean no tech. Standard features include an 8-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlights and taillights, Service and Safety Connect with a five-year trial, two front and two rear USB-C ports, and a 7-inch digital gauge cluster. Connected services such as cloud-based navigation, remote start, destination assistant, and a Wi-Fi hotspot are available for a subscription fee. Other available tech features include a 10.5-inch infotainment screen, a nine-speaker JBL premium audio system, wireless phone charging, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
