What’s New for the 2028 Volvo XC60
The 2028 Volvo XC60 gets new sheet metal front and rear, an updated cabin, and a reshuffled powertrain lineup. The T8 AWD long-range plug-in hybrid now makes 455 combined horsepower and 78 miles of electric range, more than double the outgoing plug-in hybrid's 35 miles. Otherwise, the base B5 AWD mild hybrid carries over largely unchanged.

Design
The new front end wears a slimmer grille and a more sculpted hood than the outgoing XC60's flatter surfaces. Thor's hammer headlights return, now using Matrix LED technology split across fifteen segments for a wider, more precise beam pattern. Around back, Volvo widened the taillights, reshaped the tailgate, and added a new bumper, leaning harder into horizontal lines. Heather Bronze is a new color option, with soft bronze and violet tones that shift depending on the light, and it suits the car better than most Volvo colors we've seen.
Powertrain
Two propulsion choices carry the 2028 XC60, both paired with an eight-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive. The B5 AWD's turbocharged four-cylinder makes 247 horsepower, unchanged from before, and reaches 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. The T8 AWD long-range plug-in hybrid combines that same 247-horsepower engine with a 208-horsepower electric motor for 455 horsepower total and a 4.5-second sprint to 60, numbers that put it ahead of the BMW X5 xDrive50e and on par with the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e. Its 41.2 kWh battery (more than twice the capacity of the outgoing PHEV's) delivers 78 miles of EPA-estimated electric range and 590 miles combined. A full charge on a Level 2 charger still takes 5.7 hours despite the larger pack. Fuel economy lands at 26 mpg combined for the B5 and 67 MPGe for the T8.

Interior
Volvo's interior team leaned on materials rather than screens to make its case. A leather headliner and dash cover pair with a wool-like fabric insert and real wood trim, and the Orrefors crystal shifter still adds a bit of ceremony between the seats. Despite the much larger battery, cargo space holds steady thanks to floor-mounted packaging, with up to 53.6 cubic feet of luggage room behind the front row on plug-in hybrid models. Rear-seat legroom is generous, though a two-year-old riding rear-facing won't get much use out of it.
Technology
An 11.2-inch touchscreen anchors the dash, running Volvo's latest software with Google built in, including Google Maps and Google Gemini for natural-language voice commands. The screen sits a little awkwardly between the air vents, not as visually integrated as we'd expect from Volvo. The software underneath is a different story: noticeably quicker than the outgoing system, with none of the lag that used to be a fair complaint. An optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system is available, and the XC60 gets over-the-air updates going forward.
Safety
Volvo overhauled the XC60's sensor suite for 2028, adding new cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors alongside an updated safety computer to run them. Standard driver assistance now includes automatic emergency steering alongside automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, and mitigation. A rear door alert warns occupants of approaching cyclists or traffic before they open the door, and Pilot Assist adds lane change assist to its existing suite. An optional 360-degree camera system now includes a 3D view for tighter parking situations. Crash test evaluations from NHTSA and IIHS are not yet available for the redesigned 2028 model.

Pricing and Release Date
At the time of writing, Volvo has not released pricing for the 2028 XC60. The redesigned model is expected in the first quarter of 2027. Shoppers who want an XC60 sooner will still find the current-generation 2027 model, with its own B5 and T8 powertrains, on sale in the meantime.
